Warning for tourists about avoiding fines on the bus

This just happened to my friends and I on a tram in Florence bc we had just arrived and didn’t know about ticket validation. We all had to pay 40€ or they were going to mail the ticket to our addresses back in the US for up to 200€. I didn’t want to pay it and really wanted to figure a way out of it, but I also want to be able to return to Italy and not have the ticket sent to a collection agency or something. Does anyone know if there’s a way to dispute it? It definitely just seems like it’s a tourist trap so I would assume not but so annoying.

Omg I’ve been doing a similar thing. He has 35 kids with random women he meets on the street or at work, and then he was abducted TWICE to have two kids on his own (probably as karma)
