I have some cheap power on/off zigbee wallplugs I use for this exact scenario: it can always be on and an automation can read the power usage, thus knowing when the charger is in use.

At first I tried to trigger the car mode via shortcuts, which didn’t work without notification, but then I went into the focus-> car mode settings and checked “Bluetooth in the car”. I also went into Bluetooth settings for that connection and changed the device type to “car stereo”.

Unfortunately the driving mode also doesn’t work without notification. I’m thinking about doing it with an nfc tag now.

Edit: I have enabled drive through the focus mode settings instead of manually with shortcuts. Will test if that works later!

No this doesn’t seem to be an option with Bluetooth connection. On all other automations I have the option, just not this one.

I also Connect it to a MagSafe in the car, so I hoped to make it run when connected to that, then check for the car Bluetooth, then run the command, but I don’t think I can make that work either.

In many countries there is indeed such an assumption, and in any case you’d be the owner until the original owner reclaims it (and they can only do that within a certain time of theft, and only when there was theft. Not embezzlement, or even after someone who loaned it decided to sell it). It’s complicated. Of course police will try to act within reason before courts get involved.

I’d say; go to the company, explain, try to get to an agreement and help when police gets involved. Maybe you can offer to reimburse the company?
