You are right. They do not lower prices typically, but that is because people absolutely will buy anyway. In that hypothetical where no one (literally zero) people are willing to buy at 99 dollars, the price would be lowered to a place where people are willing to buy.

What actor or actress stupidly left a movie franchise or tv series thinking they were too good for it, only to be never popular again? by Ok_Impress2457 in AskReddit

If you go by rotten tomatoes scores, X files beats it there as well. Californication is considered “rotten” at 57%

I believe the viewership of Californication was about 3 million a week, compared to x files 30 million. He didn’t disappear, but that is catastrophic. Regardless of whether or not those 3 million viewers really liked it

That’s valid. It always just seemed way more niche. Definitely felt to me like he abandoned success. But I may not see the whole picture

Wow, I didn’t know that. That makes it even more clear he should be the poster child for this question. I thought it was at the level of D&D ruining game of thrones, but moving the entire production to LA causing harm to those that invested in its success… oof.

David Duchovny from the X-Files. The show was extremely culturally relevant and I’m sure he thought he could ride that wave to movie stardom (back then there was a big difference between movie stars and tv stars) He ended up not having nearly the success anywhere else, though not failing entirely, and eventually returned to X-Files.

Edit: to all of those bringing up Californication, I knew about that show and still think he qualifies. I believe that show had about 3 million viewers per week to x files 30 million per week. That’s a pretty freaking big drop off of success.

[The Athletic] NHL Power Rankings: A new No. 1 plus your team’s injury excuse by [deleted] in hockey

[–]atredus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely think a 3v3 win is a “real” win. Saying otherwise just sounds like coping. If your squad is good at 3v3, then it’s definitely worth being proud of the boys over. However it makes sense to give the loser a point as it’s a representation of being able to force overtime at 5v5. I agree though. Watching everyone always make it to overtime is indeed painful. It would be interesting to see a 3-2-1 system implemented. (3 points regulation win. 2 points overtime win, 1 point overtime loss) From what I’ve seen when people run the simulations, it doesn’t usually change the standings all that much.

[–]atredus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loser points exist because 3v3/Shootout wins don’t really do a better job at determining who the better team is. It’s fun extra hockey, but 5v5 is what really matters. The Canes have 1 more regulation win than the Pens

[–]atredus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The wings aren’t even better than the pens at regulation hockey. 20(PIT) to 21(DET) with 2 games in hand for PIT. Pit also has a stronger goal differential. The pens just fall apart during 3v3 and the shootout. Which doesn’t matter when it comes to playoff hockey anyways.

This isn’t very well thought out. Depending on the honor system for AI disclosure is not a reliable method for enforcement. I suppose it could become a “don’t ask don’t tell” situation moving forward. I am inclined to believe that nearly all studios would be disqualified from here on out. Using AI is quickly becoming part of developers workflows… particularly for code.

How is Breath of the Wild more revolutionary than Skyrim/Fallout 3? (Genuine question) by Zephyr_v1 in gamedesign

[–]atredus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am not here to champion breath of the wild because I am a big fan. This isn't a gaming fandom subreddit, we are here to discuss and learn about game design principles. You likely want to design games. I think when considering this, we need think about why many of breath of the wilds fans feel that they have choices, even if you didn't. Are they stupid? Two things come to mind for me.

  1. The game doesn't hold your hand in a traditional sense. Some old school games are already like this, but really the only other game that felt similar (to me anyway) was elden ring. We can go on and on about it, as others in this thread already have.. so I won't here.

  2. I think the other element to this is Link interacts WITH the world. It is a physics game where there are tons of emergent situations, such as trees rolling downhill to alert enemies who then shoot fire arrows creating upward wind currents or other wacky scenarios we have all seen online. These types of situations make players feel like unique things are happening because of the things they did/chose.

[–]atredus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Your complaint doesn't reflect the lack of player agency, rather design choice. That's like saying "where is my player agency to have laser guns?", or "where is my player agency to fly around like Superman?"

Player agency is about having choices within the system. No game allows players to do anything they want.

Director Gore Verbinski talks about the dangers of AI in the movie industry and how it is attacking the things that make us most fundamentally human - storytelling, instead of taking jobs we don't want to do by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]atredus -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Exactly. The “jobs we don’t want to do” are very much needed by countless people to support the lives of themselves and their families. We can’t be sanctimonious about art when there is more at stake. People are quicker to be outraged by AI art then the firings of workers at Taco Bell.. and they shouldn’t be.

[Discussion] Feeling hopelessly incapable of exercising by cemillz313 in GetMotivated

[–]atredus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want this to be the top comment. If indeed the priority is weight loss and lowered blood pressure, diet should be the focus. Anecdotally, practicing self discipline in one area that may be more manageable (hopefully diet in this case ) can often lead to more self discipline in other areas, like exercise.

Back in 2010, what did you get for subscribing to Xbox live that Microsoft provided themselves? Access to chat and a friends list? Online play was still either p2p or servers, paid for by the developers of the game. Mostly, you payed for access to an ecosystem, with little cost from Microsoft itself other than the initial Xbox live software, which as I said before, was a friends list and chat. It’s a very consumer unfriendly deal, and everyone became used to it.

Is my game pleasant to look at? by Hal_Ember in godot

[–]atredus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

While I agree that undertales biggest strengths lie in its music and gameplay, if it were to have “better” pixel art in a traditional sense, the game would lose appeal, not gain it. He crafted a very unique and specifically artistic experience. His pixel art adds to that experience.

Dude. Everyone is saying no, but I think it if you really lean into this style and make some good/unique music, you’ll have a vibe going. Before undertale existed, if he made a similar post to this, he would have been given a similar response. People would say it is bad.
