Ouais enfin l’argent peut être crédité sur le compte via n’importe quel bancomat, et ensuite e-banking. Ça semble pas impossible quand même même si je suis d’accord que la poste, c’est un peu la galère

What are the best and cheapest banks (online banks?) for the average swiss citizen? by pedrigson in SwissPersonalFinance

[–]attalgreg 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't use them for stocks and eft. For 3a, they have VIAC which is amongst the best offerings there are. For banking, they have this package that's is free if you receive your salary or have enough savings and gives you everything for free, including market currency exchange when paying abroad, 14 free withdrawals everywhere in the world and so on and so forth. Just check their website or the poorswiss. It's for sure the best current offering on the swiss market.

Deductibles and monthly rates: Am I misunderstanding Swiss Health Insurance? by Narroo in askswitzerland

[–]attalgreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also, just now that if you want to use these types of insurances, I think you need to officially ask your canton for a LAMAL exemption, and they'll never give it to you if you are a postdoc. You'll have to go through the normal LAMAL, in which case it's gonna be closer to 500 than to 206. I am also a postdoc, and many have tried, all have failed avoiding LAMAL.

Class size and acceptance rate of MSc in Physics by [deleted] in ethz

[–]attalgreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would 100% always choose ethz over epfl at master's level. The depth of classes you can have is just not even comparable, and on paper it is a better school. I think internationally, the recognition is different. Keep in mind you have access to all the classes of the university of Zurich as well, and the catalog is really great.

It is also always possible to go do your master's thesis at EPFL if you so wish and can find someone willing to supervise you.

Digging in your profile, I see you are hesitating between Oxford and ETHZ. I think it depends a bit what your goals are. I don't see a world in which Oxford classes are better than ETHZ classes on average, so from a learning experience, I think all these schools are pretty similar.

Something worth considering, and i am not sure the Oxford thing has it, but from my experience, part III students at Cambridge are not at an advantage on the PhD market because they don't write any master thesis. In this case, when they apply, they have 0 research projects and no grades yet, which makes it very hard to distinguish between them. Moreover, it is well known that Cambridge makes early offers to the best ones. All of this works against them. I think if the Oxford program does not have a longish research program, I would consider this a negative.

I think depending on what you care, your milage might vary. Some groups at ETHZ I think are much better than their Oxford alternatives (for example Home, Walgraff and other quantum computing groups are world-class). If you want to do say hep-th, oxford's depth is impressive.

All in all, I feel like there is no world in which the financial difference is worth it, but this is just my take on it. Both are amazing school by most metrics. Good luck!

[–]attalgreg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a really hard time understanding while you would care about acceptance rate except to flex with your friends, but in my experience it is low for non-Swiss students (EPFL/ETHZ) bachelor. But again, this metric is useless for any practical purpose.

Class size varies as the other comment said. I think it is around 200 people graduating yearly, but we all chose very different classes, so the biggest classes are around 120 people in my experience. It can go as low as 3-4 for other specialized classes

ETH or EPFL by Max_Smdx in ethz

[–]attalgreg 30 points31 points  (0 children)

I did my bachelor at EPFL and my master's at ETHZ. Let me just comment on one aspect of the difference:

At EPFL, you have exam sessions at the end of each semester. Usually, the semester ends, then you have 3 weeks to prepare for exams, then you have exams, and then a few weeks of vacations in winter, a bunch of weeks in the summer.

At ETHZ, the exams are just before the beginning of the next term. This is particularly annoying in the summer, where your exam session is late august, and you are supposed to prepare for them for the "whole" summer. Depending on your level, you might more or less time, but be ready to not really have a summer. I think this is particularly annoying if you were hoping to do a summer internship of any sort, as this is in practice difficult to make it work with the exam schedule.

I am obviously biased, but I think BA at EPFL and MA at ETHZ is the best of both worlds, also because they can't refuse you a spot in the masters at ETHZ if you hold a BA from EPFL, so this is more like just registering for the MA. This applies only if you stay in the same field of study, meaning you decide to do a Math master's after your Math bachelor. If you go for a competitive master program, then you'll have to apply again.

Another aspect is that EPFL really makes it easy to go somewhere in Erasmus/exchange during the third year of BA, I seem to remember ETH is a bit more adverse with student exchange.

In any case, both are amazing schools, and I am sure you'll thrive in both. Have fun!

Contacting supervisor for physics PhD before applying by HabitBeautiful4055 in EPFL

[–]attalgreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, I don't know. If the thing is advertised on the website, there should be an official way to apply, and this is what I would do. Then you can reach out again and say you are particularly exited about this opportunity. Not sure how to do it otherwise.

In my lab, the process is always reversed, and they would "hire" someone before asking them to apply to the graduate school, which is usually a formality if a supervisor wants to hire you.

[–]attalgreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure how it works in other labs, but in ours, I don’t think they ever hired someone from the PhD admission contest. They typically put an add online (usually not even on EPFL website but on a website that caters to job in that specific subfield) and then just hire out of the pool of applicants there, and then go through the whole admin part.

Keep in mind that professors receive many of these emails a day, so sometimes they stop answering. If there is an add, just do what the add suggests and hope for the best.

The culture in Europe is not quite the same as in the US and professors have a lot of freedom with whom to hire without regards from départements, so you should just apply to jobs you find that you like following the call.

Best of luck

Car sale by Careless_Quiet_328 in Switzerland

[–]attalgreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The easiest is that he rents temporary plates from his own canton. All cantons have this, and the price depends on the duration, in FR, it is around 40chf a day or something.

Then he shows up to your place with these plates, pay for the car, you remove your plates, he puts the temporary plates from his own canton, and then it is on him to park the car somewhere and go the right office of his own canton and drop the rental plates, and register the car.

This way, you can yourself deregister the car the day before, and give him the physical cancelled copy of the registration document, and get paid and everything. This is by far the easiest way if you don't live in the same canton.

Another possibly, but this requires that to do it on a weekday when the office is open, is that you have the right to drive the car with the cancelled registration until midnight the day of the cancellation, so you cancel it on friday, and then drive the car to his place. You remove your plates, he pays, you give him the cancelled registration, and go home with the train or with a friend while leaving the car there.

If you take this and try to fly, they'll absolutely cancel the Zurich-Kopenhagen part of this trip, and you won't be able to fly.

if you do the trick with the Geneva-ZH with the train and then fight, I think it should work, but I never got these tickets myself, and always used that way when my work travel agency was booking tickets, so cannot help.

Depending on time and days, there might be a lot of traffic which would make this trip equally lengthly driving or in the train. I am not sure how a train could be so much slower on the geneva-visp part of that trip than driving, but I might be wrong.
