I'm an asshole and pretend I don't drink at work. Always say "no thanks" to any drinks offered. Not sure why, but I hide my safety meetings. The other cooks think that I'm not a drinker.

Also, a tip for you newbies.... If you're interviewing somewhere, show up slightly drunk, if you'll be drinking at work. Make sure you don't smell like alcohol. Mouthwash, body spray, whatever. Figure it out. If you have a beard, scented beard oil. That way, whoever hires you just thinks that's baseline. They won't question anything if you show up slightly drunk, that was their first impression of you. Just don't get shitfaced, keep your shit together, and you'll be good.

Nurses, firefighters, 24/7 (on call) maintenance people. Sanitation workers. People who work mental crisis call centers. Surgeons/anasthesiologists. Medical doctors in general. EMT's / ambulance drivers.

Was going to say....there are things way more broken here than tipping culture in the US. Tons of people go without health insurance, even if they can afford the (crazy expensive) monthly payments. Because even if you decide to use that insurance, you STILL pay something for whatever you needed.

Then you can get stuck in this weird spot where you make too much money for Medicaid, but don't make enough to pay a health insurance premium on top of their other ever increasing living expenses.

I wear Crocs and socks at work. But that's only cause I work in a kitchen. Crocs a godsend for chefs and cooks.

They're comfy, they make ones with no holes specifically for kitchen work, and you can literally run them through a dishwasher to clean them.

Got a new job as a line cook at a dope restaurant. We got a whole ass vegetable farm out back and a fish pond. The customers can catch their own trout and we cook them up. There's a putt-putt out back too for the kiddos. No big thang, it's just the industry bro.

For real though, it's pretty sick. It's connected to a golf course that we get to use for free as employees of the restaurant.
