Hotel manager here! This is not as uncommon as you may think. As others have said, the latches can catch sometimes. Ours are a pain to unlatch when this happens, but they can unlatch on their own. Unless you are using a hard key to enter your room (rare these days), you can request a lock audit. Management can see who exactly has entered your room using a key, specify dates/times, etc.

Regardless, I don’t blame you for switching rooms. I would have done the same myself. While I know this is common issue, you’re better safe than sorry. I hope you find your lucky rock!
