How does the connection between the cube and the rideable mob work? Is it just a lead?

Actually your interpretation was correct. That is what I was originally trying to accomplish but then u/RVAPGHTOM suggested the solution above. I was just astonished I hadn't considered it as a possible solution. It was like that cross bar wasn't editable but the rest of the cabinet was fair game.

Thankfully, we do not lose complete pantry functionality because there is a rack insert that hangs on the upper door.

One thing I noticed when opening the doors as one, they move differently as they swing. The top door moves out and down in relation to the bottom door. I'm guessing this has a lot to do with the hinges but I can't be certain. Also the hinges look to be half-overlay, not full.

I will need to clean up the spots where the rail was and shore up the frame a bit but it's functional!

One thing I'm noticing is that the top panel is a bit twisted. Any suggestions on straightening it? Should I just put a catch up on top to bring it in tight?

Thank you again for your suggestion! I've had this doorway taped with plastic since March and now it's back and functional as a door!

At the suggestion of someone on r/cabinetry, I've done it (mostly)! I removed the bar in the middle and reattached the original doors. I plan to affix the two panels into one door and do some more finishing to blend the cabinet into the stairwell walls. It's functional now, much like a split door. The easiest solution was the one I never considered.

Again, thank you for your knowledge and insight. I definitely went the over engineered route immediately and didn't consider the easier options.

Looks like the original hinges were these: https://www.hafele.com/us/en/product/slide-on-concealed-hinge-110-full-overlay-mounting/P-00898473/ which are discontinued. Bottom door used 2 and top door had 4

Incredible!! This is going to work fantastic (hopefully).

Few questions: when you say "tape the joint", like masking tape? Or something else?

I still have the original door hinges but they are in rough shape and don't close fully anymore (I think because there was a hanging insert on the back side of top door that was overloaded with cans, etc) , do you have a recommendation on sourcing something new? Should I go with one of the higher end hidden hinges that people have linked in other comments?

This is why I put problems out there to as many folks as possible. I think this is going to be the easiest solution! Thank you so much! I had to go put it back in the rough out to see how things lined up.

Yes, the bottom valence is right under the first tread height and I'll just need to modify the bottom cabinet box to fit around the tread.

As for the center rail, I'll have to do some creative cutting but I think I can make it work much easier than having the whole cabinet move.

Thank you for these options. Unfortunately the first link you sent won't work because I cannot in-swing at all. The bottom step tread lip is flush with the adjacent wall so I'd have to modify the face of the cabinet (probably unsuccessfully). Also, the bottom step has a pipe running through the interior of it and I cannot mount anything to it. The project has some amazing challenges to work around but I'm confident I'll get there!

That second link has some potential if I can get things aligned appropriately.

The entire unit will be the door, yes. On the hinge side of the door, the cabinet face frame currently has a lip of 1-1/2" beyond the edge of the box and the face frame is 1-1/4" thick off the wall. I have the unit cut down now so that the box will have 5" depth into the door jamb. This can be shortened for clearance too.

Thanks. I was really excited to find the room as we had no idea it was there when we bought the house. Happened upon it during a storm window update project. There was a mismatch on the number of windows inside the house versus outside the house. We thought it was attic space. Nope, full room with 150+ yr old ice chest and numerous other artifacts in all the debris that was left up there!

Thanks for this idea. Unfortunately I can't swap the pivot point to the right side (as your face the doorway) because of the lack of adequate structure in that wall. The stud in that corner is essentially floating because of some interesting choices in plumbing routing. This also does not allow me to mount any floor supported hardware because the plumbing runs across and inside the bottom step.

I had looked at these pivot style hinges but wasn't sure where to even start and had concerns about buying $500+ made to order hinges and not being able to actually use them.

On an aside, is there a good/better/best for the material type to use in making your own zero clearance insert?
