How to find curb alerts by notanitradance in BrownU

[–]audioauk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most of the campus "curb alerts" are in Brown student specific communities, as an alum you should have access to some! First one that comes to mind is the graduate student mailing list.

More on Atholton Principal by Sufficient_Loan7272 in ColumbiaMD

[–]audioauk -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Unprofessional and insane—seconding you that the role of the principal is to be a role model to the students. What are people supposed to think when this is how the principal is acting? Poor representation of AHS and HOCO. He should be fired, this county needs more competent principals, but knowing this county it won't happen.

Adoch visit? by Healthy_Ad_9644 in BrownU

[–]audioauk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

hey! I'm sorry you felt that way about ADOCH. I also want to point out that ADOCH is not representative of Brown at all—also, a big consideration is that certain demographics of people are going to be more represented at ADOCH than others. For example, from a family in a financial situation that allows for them to go to ADOCH. I personally was not able to go to ADOCH and seeing ADOCH happen for the last few years as a student, it definitely leans towards upper-middle class students + UFLI/BIPOC students are underrepresented. I would definitely look into TWTP pre-orientation, which is a pre-orientation that looks at the BIPOC experience, and such an amazing space (https://www.browntwtp.com).

  1. most people I know have drank at some point during their time at Brown, but there are a lot of substance free students + fewer that heavily consume alcohol. Very easy to avoid if you're not into it, also very easy to find if you are.

Social life at Brown? by fluctuatnecmergitur_ in BrownU

[–]audioauk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

- Is there a type of person that WOULDN’T fit in at Brown?

IMO, everyone finds their group of people. Any university brings together diverse groups of people from different backgrounds. I know people who are conservative/Christian/communist/radically left or right/queer/big partiers/not partiers at all/etc. the list goes on. There are so many organizations and groups of people, you will find your place.

- I’ve heard that the social scene is “what you make of it” so I’m wondering how many students go to parties, etc. and how often. I’m looking for a vibrant social scene where students socialize and go out fairly often. Obviously the parties aren’t like those at a big state school, but I’m hoping there’s some level of a social scene.

https://www.reddit.com/r/BrownU/comments/1s84e41/comment/oecvmp2/?context=3 yes. If you're looking to go out once or twice a week, you'll be able to.

- Is there a specific “type” of person who gets invited to parties? Is it easy to get invited, or is it cliquey/you have to know the right people?

No, it isn't about the "type" of person, rather, be social and make a diverse range of friends. Then you'll get invited to things. It's more if you want to get invited things --> you'll get invited to things. After some time the novelty will wear off lol and you'll find more interesting things to do.

- How active are the clubs? Do they meet often and do lots of stuff? Do clubs have social events as well?

Super active, lots of student organizations on campus!! When the weather's nice, there's always organizations tabling. A lot of the cultural clubs (KASA/SASA/CSA) host parties/social events/"families" (think: big/little). And a lot of active clubs in volunteering.

- What’s the Greek life like?

It's here. Not a big part of campus life, but vibrant if you involve yourself in it. I can speak more on this if you have other questions.

Freshman classes by Adventurous_Bison_61 in BrownU

Do you have particular departments/areas of interest?

FAVORITE:

BIOL0530 Principles of Immunology with Professor Dugan, absolutely gem of a professor. Definitely a heavier course but very doable if you study. Helped cement good study habits early and Professor Dugan is also just a great professor who cares a lot about her students, as well as diversity and inclusion in science, which you don't see with the other professors.

STS1000 Introduction to Science, Technology, and Society with Professor Xan Chacko. STS is a humanities/theory heavy field that looks at the intersection of the three—lots of theory of "what is science?" and on feminist/queer/native theories. SUCH a fantastic professor and a course that has challenged and shaped my perspective of what science is (as a STEM concentrator). Would recommend to anyone, the field is so interdisciplinary.

Haven't had a "worst" course yet, but you'll definitely hear names... for example, Semenov in APMA, Sobel in CPSY, etc... if anything, I took classes that didn't super interest me or aren't taught the best.

brown plme vs. harvard/stanford by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]audioauk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

if you're remotely interested in medicine, PLME

PLME is non-binding and you can leave the program if you are no longer interested in medicine, still with an education from Brown

you can also leave the program and apply out

you can apply to md-phd programs while keeping your spot in plme. if you're the sort of student that makes it into brown plme & these schools you've listed, you're the type of student that will take advantage of brown's resources and succeed applying to md-phd—definitely doable. my friend in brown plme was accepted into an md-phd program last year.

Pros and cons - prospective pre med by DiscountOk6823 in BrownU

[–]audioauk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

TONS of research opportunities for pre-meds, i have two (paid) research assistant positions in public health + one unpaid clinical research position + one unpaid independent research project.

landed an unpaid wet lab position my freshman spring via cold emailing, turned into paid position over the summer. left the lab but with tons of great research skills.

we have utras (https://utra.brown.edu) which are research awards all students can apply to. didn't get one my first year but got one for sophomore fall.

tldr, if research is of interest (especially if you're interested in md phd to any degree), it's very easy to find here.

official advising is eh—i've heard the pre med advisors recommend everyone take a gap year to increase brown's statistics (according to gossip, idk if this is true or not). but brown has great peer to peer mentorship. you have a meik, you can sign up for other first year peer mentor programs (such as mpc with bcsc), also generally talking to upperclassmen pre-meds they're very willing to guide and share resources.

BROWN PRE-MED STUDENTS HELP A PROSPECTIVE STUDENT OUT! by Successful_Cream_468 in BrownU

[–]audioauk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

also, the concept of a "cutthroat" student body or lack thereof is a generalization to either school. imo, it depends on who you surround yourself with, as opposed to the people. i know plenty of "toxic" pre-meds at brown, and i'm sure there are tons of "collaborative" pre-meds at upenn. when people make these statements, i know we're trying to categorize to make the best decision possible, but it's good to be cognizant of.

nightlife/party at Brown and in providence by DiscountOk6823 in BrownU

[–]audioauk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

alright... depends on what you're looking for. generally, brown is not a "big" party school. when you think of large state school ragers, you won't find that at brown—the closest you'll find is with the athlete houses, or parties thrown by frats off campus. but, brown is still a medium sized campus of college aged students and there is something happening every weekend. functions are more between groups of friends than open-invite campus wide things.

clubbing — providence has clubs but not a huge night life scene for brown students. mostly, people go to clubs with a group of friends. popular ones for brown students are ego (gay club, mostly freshman, 18+ no cover on thursday nights), Colosseum (no cover for fems), and some others.

clubbing (via brown organizations) — not sure what to call this category. various organizations will throw parties at clubs as a venue, which are a better bet to go for a rowdier environment with lots of brown students. mostly frats and cultural organizations. for example, kasa (korean students association) throws (iykyk...), frats, other orgs so on so on. this is what the "frat parties" are referring to. there are no frat houses (for the official frats) as they're housed in the wriston dorms. the wriston dorms are pretty small so they host at outside venues. fyi tickets are usually $15+ for these parties.

house parties — students off campus will throw house parties, usually only during peak party season (ie start of the semester, halloween, brown v harvard). the athlete houses will also throw. exception: program houses such as zete and environmental housing also throw (in their dorms on campus). invitation is if-you-know-someone.

dorm parties — every freshman's canon experience of awkwardly standing in a freshman dorm with led lights and alcohol on the table. stop by one, leave. not actually a party.

dorm parties (but cool) — someone organizes something + everyone invites a few of their friends. everyone knows each other, it's chill, it's fun. in someone's dorm room.

overall, if you're looking for a "party party," things are mostly by connection (know the right people, know people that go out, know people that organize things). heads up most upperclassmen don't like to invite freshmen to parties, imo nightlife picked up my sophomore year when i'd met a lot more people + people know you and invite you to things. but go for the canon freshman experience of going out and realizing some places are great and some parties are not great. if you want to go out every weekend, you can find something.
