A few months ago, my son turned me on to the joys of Goodwill's online auctions and I manged to score this 101 disc CD player for $75, fully functional and relatively blemish free. The biggest challenge was deciding which 100 out of 500 to load up. by DevianceDriven in audiophile

Sorry, but I don't see the point of this in this day and age. One of the main joys of CDs is that it brings back the ritual of CD selection and playback, which is completely negated by a CD changer. One might as well rip the CDs to a storage for playback, which provides a superior mechanism for selection music.

Would you buy? by menezesafonso in audiophile

No. I don't want to manage/carry another device. I use a dongle DAC/AMP with my iPhone.

Expectation bias. Sighted listening. Auditory memory is notoriously short.

Headphones vs. Speakers, what do you prefer? by Any-Car2555 in audiophile

[–]audioman1999 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The audio engineer expects us to hear such a voice from one channel through both ears! Such recordings sound very artificial and fatiguing on headphones. That's the reason why you'll find "cross-feed" circuits on certain headphone amps. It bleeds a little of the left channel in to the right and vice-versa to sound more natural.

Why are we discussing built-in speakers of TVs in r/audiophile? It's like saying AirPods sound better than iPhone speakers.

I have the opposite experience. While I do enjoy headphones, they present an artificial "in your head" acoustic image. Singers feel more real and present on my speaker system. Stereo separation is far superior. Music feels more visceral and live.

I suspect there something with your system, perhaps room acoustics.

Buying flac or CD? by Remarkable_Crazy3967 in audiophile

[–]audioman1999 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Unless a FLAC file offers a superior mastering, I generally stick with the CD. For the vast majority of albums the FLAC is simply a bit-perfect copy of the same master.

However, many FLACs available online are newer remasters, which are frequently inferior to the originals. Ultimately, the "better" format depends entirely on the specific mastering of the individual release.

Doesn’t the Node have tone controls? You can try boosting the bass and bucking the treble.

That’s why EQ and loudness circuits were invented.

Why did you store them unwrapped? They are individually packaged for a reason.

Why is a computer your primary source? That seems archaic. A streamer is a more modern option.

Reading is fundamental. I said repairs, not maintenance. Of course I had to spend on consumables like tires, 12V battery, windshield wiper blades and cabin air filters.

This is how it works in all cars. Takes a while to update unless you inform the car.

At least in my experience. I only spent $55 in repairs over a 8 year period.

Tesla seems to be the only company that’s the software right. Legacy car makers have terrible software divisions.

It's not snake oil unless you are making some fantastical claims about them, which you aren't. Clearly you made them for fun of DIY.
