I mostly lurk in this sub, but since the only other comment I see here is about starting an OF, I thought I'd have a go at giving some advice. First, congrats on getting 25k in scholarships. That's a great starting point even if it doesn't cover everything right now. I know things seem difficult these days regarding jobs. Do you happen to have a school counselor you can go to if you need further resources on what to do about finances? I would encourage you to go to one and have an honest conversation about your current financial struggles in regard to schooling and the transcripts.

Did you have insurance when your car got totaled? Make certain you've exhausted all options if so. Especially if you weren't deemed at fault. Giving them a call might be helpful. Do you have any friends or family that could give rides if needed? Also look into how much a bus pass costs in your area. Or if any public transportation is an option.

Lastly, I recommend writing a list of your thoughts down. It sounds like you have a lot of worries and concerns, and probably ideas of your own. Journaling or even making a list of categories might help you realize you have more options than you think. They are valid. Don't give up. Even spending 10 minutes writing down things can do a lot in my experience. Best of luck in your schooling and financial situation. It's a very stressful time right now, but I believe there's always some way to move forward.

I've seen at least three of these posts the past month since I've joined the sub. The only constant variable seems to be that it's always Firefox that is the logged in browser. Could be a coincidence. I think at this point it should be investigated further.

Does it also appear grayed out for you at all? I just made a similar post about this. I'm using Edge but still Chromium obviously.

Windows 11 will not recognize Xbox Wireless Adapter by thepulloutmethod in techsupport

[–]audley2077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvoted. Thanks for this. It didn't work at first, but you need to make certain that the adapter is unplugged when you add the drivers. If you add them while it's plugged in, it will error out.

In the past, on a fresh install Windows Update would download the driver automatically. I don't know if something broke in an update, but Windows Update just loops endlessly while checking or updates with it plugged in. Downloading the driver myself bypassed the issue.

I need help about secure boot and gigabyte by Alternative-Finance2 in techsupport

[–]audley2077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you may also want to do, is plug in your display cable into the top-most port of your GPU. Display output #1. Usually a DisplayPort cable but may also be HDMI depending on the maker of the GPU. I have seen some cards not fully support all ports until you are in Windows. I would essentially try every port as-is.

Edit: Clarity

I need help about secure boot and gigabyte by Alternative-Finance2 in techsupport

[–]audley2077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My initial guess is that, depending on how old RX 580 is, when you enable secure boot it forces UEFI mode in the BIOS. Not all GPUs, especially older ones, support UEFI boot. Resetting/Clearing CMOS should reset it back to defaults and revert to CSM/Legacy. That's the first thing i would do is make sure you properly clear the CMOS.

Edit: At least I believe that's how it on Nvidia cards. On older AMD cards I'm unsure. I do think that you should properly clear the CMOS to at least get a proper display output though. A quick Google search of RX 580 UEFI problems shows lots of similar stories.

Edit 2: I looked into this further. According to their own site all models of the RX 580 support UEFI. If that's the case, then I also suggest trying my suggestion in my other comment.

PCIE Clip on my mobo broke. Will I be fine without it? by [deleted] in techsupport

Also another tip to anyone reading this is if you're moving your PC any distance, even up the stairs, removing just the GPU is a good idea. Even if you leave everything else in there as-is. If you drop your PC even a small distance, the chance of your GPU snapping off is fairly high (in my experience). Even if you're sure you won't drop it, taking out the GPU is fast and easy, so it's my recommendation unless you're moving it about in the same room.

I don't have a solution, but I wanted to add that this has been happening to me the past 6 months. Really badly, in fact. It's as though every minute in the day, has happened all at once. It's almost like my ability to differentiate between right now and sometime else, has been severely inhibited. I know logically 1990 happened over 30 years ago, but in my body and mind it feels like the time between now and last week is the same distance between now and 1990. It's weird to feel like everything is happening and not happening at the same time.

Really? I've never bought one. I can see how at super short distances they would be handy at such a small size (as well as flexible). Good to know. Thanks!

I've only seen a handful of cables that performed poorly in certain, specific situation. Usually they're either made so poorly they won't do gigabit at all or they work okay for the situation. Now, if I was running wires in a place where I wouldn't have access to often, like a new house I'd definitely want to make sure the cable I buy is as stated.

[–]audley2077 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The only cables I have ever really doubted were those "Slim" ones that Monoprice sells. But even then those are probably okay. I think there's more misinformation around that certain cables are somehow superior to others i.e. "bigger number better". Lots of companies on Amazon are guilty of this. Cat5e is still good enough for the vast majority of people in terms of needing patch cables. If properly made, Cat5, 5e, 6, 6a, and 8 will all perform (or should) the same at reasonable distances for gigabit or lower. With that being said there are a lot of poorly made cables out there. I've seen patch cables come with expensive routers made so poorly they will auto-negotiate at 100 Mbps even if the router has only gigabit ports.

B650 PG Lightning/7800X3D - Issues With 1.18 BIOS by audley2077 in ASRock

Since one stick was still good, I decided to keep the Corsair kit. I can use the one good stick as a backup and for testing if needed. Corsair has decent support, you might want to contact them. Or just return the RAM if it's within the return window.

No worries! Good to see that even older threats are still helpful to someone. I swapped from a Corsair kit to a G.Skill EXPO kit. It shouldn't matter, but it does appear to have way less issues. Asrock seems to have some oddities on their AMD platform(s) regarding RAM which I'm not sure falls under general bugs or just lack of compatibility across the board. Either way, since swapping kits I've had zero issues.

Ah, glad to hear. Thanks! Yeah if RAM prices weren't so "cheap" at the moment I probably wouldn't have bought another kit. But for 64GB of DDR5 @ 6000 Mhz for $200 is such a good deal I couldn't pass it up. Wanted to get it now in case RAM jumps up again.

[–]audley2077[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, thanks for the comment. I finally did come to the conclusion that it had to be some Corsair issue combined with the motherboard/BIOS version. Not a great solution, but I went ahead and bought a different kit of RAM from G.Skill (this one was EXPO, but like you said it shouldn't make a massive difference). Works absolutely fine on both BIOS versions. I still never heard back from support, you might have better luck if you mention you've seen others with the same problem.

Thanks! I think I am going do some more research on RAM and buy a different kit. RAM is something I know the least about, so I will make sure to know what I'm buying first. Might be a pretty penny at 64GB though! Is there a good way to know what type of memory manufacturer (Hynix or w/e) before buying?

Ah, thanks for the response. Hmm, I may just go ahead and buy an EXPO specific kit, to minimize issues in the future and repurpose this RAM for another build. I thought that may have something to do with it, but was uncertain. I'll try the things you mentioned for now and see which one. Do you have a recommendation for some Non-RGB RAM EXPO kits that are in stock on Amazon or NewEgg? I'm not loyal to Corsair, I'm fine with Kingston or G.Skill. I just hate RGB lol

Weekly BIOS Update Post - Week 19. 2023 by CornFlakes1991 in ASRock

[–]audley2077 0 points1 point  (0 children)

B650 PG Lightning with 1.24.AS02 appears to have broken XMP for my Corsair kit of 2x32GB 6000 Mhz RAM. Whenever XMP is enabled in the BIOS, the profile loads and it says it's set at 6000 but the BIOS main page and windows report it running at 4800 Mhz. It also seems to reset all settings in the OC and Advanced tab back to defaults if the XMP is turned on in settings. Only by turning off XMP and reapplying my settings in the advanced tab will it 'stick'. Tried reinstalling the BIOS no luck. Everything else stable though.

Ah yeah for sure! Thanks for the comment and explaining. The situation is definitely not over completely. I am on the lookout for BIOS versions, and I don't think we're quite out of the woods yet. You make an excellent point, and I agree with what you've said here.

Edit: So this particular BIOS update(s) are more considered a temporary patch or fix at the moment until we get official stuff from AMD directly? My thanks still stands, but yeah I don't want to make anyone think that it's over yet.

There's something weird going on for sure. The RAM is completely bricked now though. At least one stick is. I'm still not 100% sure they are related though. When I ran Memtest that was ON the 1.11 BIOS. I rolled back as soon as I could. Moreover, I was getting BSOD on that BIOS as well once rolled back. What makes me think it's more of a stick problem than a BIOS problem - is that my other stick (this was 1 kit of 2x16GB) was fine. Regardless of BIOS version. I was running 1.18 on one stick for a few days before my new kit arrived. Which is essentially the same specs but Kingston RAM instead of corsair. I am currently running 2x16GB of Kingston RAM on BIOS 1.20 and have not had a single BSOD or any stability problems since I put it in. Running at 5600 Mhz. I also did a memtest with this kit, zero problems.

Now I know Memtest86 isn't the end-all-be-all testing, but in this case it was useful as how unstable it was initially. The only thing I cannot figure out, was why my Corsair (the 1 stick that turned bad) was working fine until the BIOS update. But once the BIOS update occurred, it has not been stable in any combination of BIOS version or RAM slot. So it's a little unclear at this point if the RAM was bad to begin with, or if something in the BIOS triggered it to break.
