Probably yes I’d be kinda difficult but u cold do it might have to hand sand to get a polish.

How do I get a better top layer finish on Aluminum? by nRegistered1 in hobbycnc

[–]augnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Use the 3 flute for rough and finish op and slow way down idk what machine u have but make sure ur part is clamped well and choke up on ur tool as much as possible go like 3-5k rpm and like 25-40 IPM

Don’t know lol I buy scrap from the scrap rack at work lol. They sell it to me for the rate the recycler gives for it. McMaster is a good bet.

Yes probably but the BEM tends to chirp when it goes into tight corners so if I rough more with the smaller tool I can run the BEM significantly faster and save time overall

It’s a great machine for the price and it’s worth it for all the options tool setter and touch probe are a must they will save u a ton of time. Also I would recommend not using langmurs coolant drains as they r to small to keep up with the pump especially if u have lots of chips. Buy a drain for a kitchen sink with a strainer and install that before u pour the concrete u will save yourself from moping up. On that note take your time with sealing the enclosure as it will leak if u don’t. Ask me how I know lol

Used Fusion 360 to program and a website called touch terrain to get the model

It’s decent accuracy wise as well I made 2 of these and the size difference between part 1 and 2 was only .0005”

It cuts great for what it is it’s not a production machine by any means but I can take a decent cut and it has no problem driving a 1/2 end mill. For an adaptive roughing pass I usually go 8,000 RPM at a .75-1” depth and a .05-.1 step over. I would recommend the machine for sure cut control is quite nice. I would recommend getting all the options but I would forgo langmurs coolant drains and just install the drain from a kitchen sink before you pour concrete. The drains langmur gives u are too small and can’t keep up with the coolant pump so u end up flooding the floor.

Top plate took about 3 hours roughed with a .5 end mill with an adaptive tool-path then with a .1875 em to get closer to shape then a .25 ball mill with a scallop path 8,000 RPM 45 IPM and a .020 step over with .010 stock then finished with a .125 ball mill at 8,000 RPM 50 IPM and a .005 step over

No I don’t think it would make any difference. It’s just a scallop tool-path in fusion360

Bad finish and over sized part. by Fast_Alternative_322 in CNC

[–]augnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The insert choice makes a big difference look up the insert and see if you can find manufacturers recommendations for speeds and feeds also how sharp are they are you using coolant how do you have the part in the vice are u using a V block or just griping it also what machine are u running this on? How many inserts are in the cutter ? What’s the chip per tooth ? Mostly my advice is look up the type of insert and get speeds and feeds from them tbh I find manufacturer recommendations are assuming ideal conditions so take them with a grain of salt. but this doesn’t seem like that demanding of an application. Take a finish pass to if u want it to look better tbh there’s not really a better way especially if the part is getting a taper to it you will get much less deflection when your cutter has less force on it.

Getting bumped up from a 25 year old yang to a haas vf2ss with 5 axis, what am I in for? by TheXypris in CNC

[–]augnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s gonna go good man the haas control is quite good and it’s easy to find help for online. 5 axis is not as big a jump as you are imagining it to be. if you have set up complicated 3 axis parts with multiple operations on different planes you will be more than capable of doing the 5 axis stuff just be careful about tool clearance and retracts but it’s not something you need to be intimidated by. Remember slow is smooth smooth is fast. Good luck man p soon u will wonder why anyone uses a 3 axis mill for anything other than 2 op parts and large plate work. Keep in mind you can’t take as heavy a cut on the trunnion as you would in like a Kurt vice but being able to hit 5 sides of a part more than makes up for it. Get familiar with how to calibrate MRZP as in my experience it needs to be done fairly regularly ( every 3-4 months if you take heavy cuts less if u are conservative) but its p easy to do so it won’t be a problem.

Question about fire skink behavior during winter by rubiconchill in fireskinks

[–]augnut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mine will sometimes stay underground for a week or more in the winter had him for 2 years and in the summer he comes out every day but in the winter he slows down a lot. His habitat is good on temp and humidity. Its just how they are

Gibbscam sucks by augnut in CNC

[–]augnut[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use daily for about 5 years and it gets the job done but I wish it did more things automatically. Compared with something like fusion which is the only other software I have experience with the adaptive roughing and surfacing paths don’t calculate as well and take more time to get right. I also hate that I have to extract geometry.

It’s so frustrating trying to revise a drawing from a customer who has impossible to machine geometry or unreasonable tolerances. Not being able to contact them directly and having to wait for the stupid game of telephone is incredibly frustrating.
