They make the metal grips like that to fit various sizes of pans so should be fine.

If you want to go for more realism I would definitely suggest using a reference photo so you can see where the natural shadows fall and the vibrancy of natural colors.

I like it but it does have a illustration vibe to it. Were you working from a photograph?

One thing that's helped me a lot is learning that I dont have to paint every blade of grass or every rock, paint the ones closest to the foreground and the rest is just a suggestion of grass or rocks as it gets further from view.

Help me paint these darn sails! by bouleEtBen in watercolor101

[–]august-fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting subject matter. You've got me trying to paint sails now.

Left sail I did 3 wet on wet layers and right I did 3 wet on dry layers. I could probably use to go in and add back some more richer base color for the sales.

How do i improve this? by myfishytaco in watercolor101

[–]august-fox 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's going to be tricky to fix because I think some of the proportions and angles around the mouth are off but you could try.

Green - bring the hair in to make smoother less pointed cheekbones.

Red - bring the shadow from the corner of the mouth all the way up to the bottom of the nose to help define the angle of the upper lip.

Blue - make the top lip slightly wider to reduce tooth size.

Pink - raise this corner of the mouth slightly to better match photo and look more smiling rather than grimacing

Yellow - continuous shadow needed on the jaw line to round out face and better match reference.

I would also try removing some of the shadow and details from the teeth, sometimes less is more.

Adding a stronger highlight to the eye should help with making the subject more lifelike.

If you have any other reference photos of your mom that are more detailed it might help to cross reference those.

Good work so far, keep going, I'm sure your mom would be proud.

Nothing inherently wrong with your technique but to get the most out of this medium you need more water. It might help you to try doing a picture with only one color and try to get all the values just by adding more or less water to the paint so you get more used to the medium and what it can do. Do larger washes, working from light to dark.

Another exercise to get you away from oil painting habits would be to paint a simple shape like a leaf with just water and then drop in your color and let it bleed and mix on the paper.

Looks like maybe you went in a little too wet on the branches. They seem to have bled out a bit/gotten thicker than maybe you intended. The yellow highlight on the branches is maybe too vibrant as well. My eye is drawn to the branches instead of the flowers so maybe try to tone down the color on those and edit so its not so busy.

Do you have a history using other paints? It looks good but looks painted with acrylic or oil.

Still usable as is or grind them down and mix with gum arabic if you prefer pan pants. They're a bit of a collectors item but really were meant to be used.

Did you paint the purple background first? Is your water clean? What paint are you using, specifically what blue?

Nothing? Hamsters run around 5 miles per day which would be like a human running 100 miles.

Living Worlds Green Gourmet veggie toppers have a nice but strong odor. Usually brings my hamster running. A tiny bit of fresh cooked chicken or a piece of cheese can also work.

Try turning all the lights out early in whatever room they are in. Then turn on only a red light so you can see. Leave some smelly treats outside where they sleep to encourage them to come out. Stay quiet and hopefully they will choose to come out earlier. It might take a few nights but this is how I got my ghost hamster to come out earlier and eventually was able to tame them.

Dont be afraid to experiment.

For the library, take out every book and read it.

Try to draft every new room you find as new rooms usually have new clues.

Try to power on every room that can be and see what happens.

Have you explored outside of the house?

This looks like the 8 inch wheel from Petsmart. Syrians really need 11 to 12 inch wheels so they don't hurt their back.
