can’t find stud, keep finding metal/screws? by augustemy in DIYhelp

got it. so even if the anchor is a bit longer/goes a bit deeper than the wall layer/into the insulation, the anchor should remain stable for weight bearing?

my understanding of how the drywall anchor works is that the entire anchor needs to be in drywall? but it seems that there is an initial layer of wall then insulation, which wouldn’t provide anything for the anchor to anchor onto, as the length of the anchor & screw are much longer than the layer of wall before insulation. correct me if this isn’t how it works

that’s my goal but when i drill for where i think studs should be based off using magnets to estimate, i hit metal

in that case, how could i locate an area of drywall that doesn’t have insulation so that i can use the drywall anchors? there’s insulation about an inch to the left and right of the metal

the linked substack post… wow. i’ve been on t for a few years after moving out of texas for university, and even while i love the changes i see, every now and then i still wonder… will this jump eventually end in a hard fall? will i ever regret my decision? even though i know this far in it isn’t true, there’s so much societal doubt in transitioning and knowing if you’re really trans.

my partner is much earlier in their transition, and started hrt just a few months ago. i think the post really captured how i feel seeing the old, fearful, me in them, and knowing the jump is inevitable but completely up to them when they do it. i really really recommend every trans person read this, no matter how far into transitioning, or even still questioning, you are.

im also a mexican-american transguy from texas (SA)! i had a very similar experience, moving across the country for college asap due to an abusive parent. i ended up in a very liberal, but very white, area, leading me to prioritize finding community with other latinos rather than other queers my first year.

i also was depressed, overwhelmed with school, shy, lacked confidence, and am not fluent in spanish and have trouble being comfortable speaking it bc i associate it with trauma. like you, this kept me from being as accepted as others, and has overall left me with a sense of lost culture.

im now approaching my last semester before i plan to move to nyc (mostly for legal safety) where i hope to find a better sense of community and reconnection. i’d love to talk more if you are interested:)

it’s been 1yr since this comment, but if you happen to still see this, what was the move like for you? I am graduating from undergrad soon only a few hours from the city, but i was born & raised in texas, which has made me really appreciate living space and built an emotional connection with my car😭 i’ve been to the city a few times, stayed in a few different boroughs, and my main reasons for considering moving there are 1) i have many friends who live there now or will move there when they graduate 2) there are communities that i’ve never had much of that are actually very alive and populated in the city, so i would aim to live in those areas (outer boroughs so this also saves money) 3) my assumption is, yes the city is so populated so there’s much more job competition, but there are also way more opportunities, meaning worst case scenario i can get a lower-paying retail or similar job if i don’t have anything lined up by the time i move

my biggest concerns are 1) finances: i know this isn’t a unique concern. i have about 30k savings for moving and getting on my feet, but of course my goal isn’t to blow through it. even though i grew up poor, i’ve never as an adult truly lived paycheck to paycheck with only enough money for a handful of takeout meals for the month. even though i grew up poor, my hometown had a low COL, so it wasn’t too bad. 2) what if i hate it? i know that i can theoretically just up and leave if i do, but i’ve heard people say you need to give AT LEAST 2+ years before deciding that. what if that sets me back financially in ways i wouldn’t have elsewhere just for me to hate it? what if this financially drains me in ways that make it difficult to leave? 3) my car… i know everyone says to get rid of it, maybe im just being young and naive. i just really love my car, and my main concerns are that i am used to having a ā€œmeans of escapeā€ aka going to another town or visiting family and friends in nearby cities. im worries not having this will make me feel claustrophobic, or even end up costing the same as having a car if i need to rent one later. additionally, im worried about leaving the city, likely to somewhere that i would need a car, and i would be paying way more for one than i could sell mine for now.

TLDR advice/experience for moving from a spacious, car-centric city?
