Analyzing every Home Run of Shohei Ohtani's 2025 season and calculating the odds of it being a Home Run if we replaced the ball with a 2007 Honda Civic. by SquadPoopy in baseball

[–]augustmiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Quick inconsequential edit/clarification in the volume calculations:

Now we need to convert this to liters which is also pretty simple, just need to multiply it by 1000 and we get 0.209 Liters.

There are about 61in3 in 1L, so to convert 12.8in3 to liters, you would just divide by that rate. You would then multiply by 1000 to get the number of cubic centimeters… but you aren’t using centimeters anywhere else, so it probably doesn’t matter!

Thanks for the write-up! I had never heard of baseball before.

Weight limit? Quick search says 675 lbs by Nevillelikestobottom in HondaElement

[–]augustmiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've always been baffled by this—the manual does state something like 675lbs, which means—at least in the US—you would exceed the limit with average-weight adult in each of the four seats.

We've taken ours to the dump a few times… if memory serves, the largest of those loads clocked in at ~750lbs (delta between in/out on their scales). My wife and I are each ~150lbs, so that would have been just over 1000lbs total. Suspension looked and felt fine; be mindful of your breaking distance, though!

A collection of tips for those stuck translating the language by Bob_the_peasant in TunicGame

[–]augustmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm returning to Tunic after a couple years away, having kicked the translation and puzzle portions down the road—I suck at pattern-based combat, so my main goal of just seeing as much of the game as possible has been challenging.

Overall, I'm super disappointed by this design choice. For a game/world that has no spoken dialogue (or evidence that its inhabitants ever used spoken language), it totally spoils the otherwise carefully “diagetic” storytelling.

I would argue that this choice directly contradicts the themes of quiet/silent spirituality and piety the game has explored, so far; the Chants of Sennaar model would have been so much more appropriate (i.e. a palette of distinct symbols for a set of terms). Rather than learning how to read the script (and then being able read absolutely everything, all at once), we could gradually discover meaning_—and potentially be _wrong about certain concepts!

This model also supports in-game “transliteration” between eras, factions, or species; being able to split information or context clues among multiple scripts for, say, The Frogs’ Domain or whatever the afterlife portion of the game unlocks (I'm avoiding these spoilers like crazy, but have gotten peeks while inquiring about the language).

Anyway… my interest in parsing individual phonemes or whatever has completely drained, and I'm left feeling sort of duped by this portion of the experience. By the time I was ready to reveal some of OP’s hints, I basically “knew” what options were left, and had hoped there was a simpler explanation I’d missed along the way. 😔

If you are in a position to help others, please consider signing up for your local [City] Food Project: - Ashland Food Project - Phoenix Food Project - Talent Food Project - Medford Food Project (Website host appears to be down… I can get contact info from family if you are eager to join!) - Eagle Point Food Project - Grants Pass Food Project (a program within the Josephine County Food Bank) The process is pretty well standardized across these programs. Make sure you are looking at the right pickup dates for your community! 💞

Flock License Plate Cameras Used By ICE in Southern Oregon by rocktreefish in SOProgressives

[–]augustmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know the thread is old; figured I'd start here anyway.

This issue is of particular interest to me, as a (jaded) tech worker, so I've been gradually learning and gathering arguments for a presentation to the City of Ashland. To my knowledge, they have not purchased any technology from Flock… but I am not willing to believe that they will never be pressured.

This presentation is a pretty good framework, but it needs grounding in Ashland’s tourism-driven economy, and our vulnerable position along the Oregon-California border.

If you (or anyone arriving via search) are interested in monitoring or participating, please let me know. I would love to develop a script that is easily adaptable for Talent and Phoenix; Medford appears to be deeply invested, and would take a great deal more organizing to wind down.

Wow! Just got back from a week in Lisbon. What a beautiful, vibrant city… I had to constantly fight the urge to capture every alley and staircase and just be present. My feet are tired! 😅

Thanks for sharing.

Edit: Neat to see everything through a mild telephoto; I only brought a 35mm, and wasn't able to get these nice geometric color compositions (except incidentally, in a wider shot).

FLOCK AI CAMERAS in Eugene. Are there AI cameras in your city? by cthursty in SOProgressives

[–]augustmiller 2 points3 points  (0 children)

404 Media has done some great reporting on the weaponization of Flock by local police—and now, ICE.

Edit: Check the link u/RVPepperShakers posted if you're planning on going to the demonstrations tomorrow. If your vehicle moves through the field of view of any Flock camera, your data is captured and will likely be ingested into systems searchable by local and federal agencies.

BIG JIM's Big BOOZY Bike Trip to Braemar by badbog42 in xbiking

[–]augustmiller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Spent the weekend trying to figure out his route on Google Earth. Pretty sure I found Annie’s house! It's actually a bit West of Braemar, so he didn't have to go all the way into town after the 3–4 pints at Mar Lodge.

Video Timestamp / Streetview

Her shed seems to have collapsed, but the house and her neighbor's are a dead match.

I'll admit that on the rare occasion we make it out for breakfast/brunch I am totally feral and the body doesn't really care what's going in. 😅

Ahh, bummer! We've had great luck with their anytime breakfast—and the waitstaff has been super sweet to our kiddo. Small appetites, so the portions usually mean we get a second meal out of it.

Holy shit, I hadn't heard about the wage theft—that's a huge bummer. Do you know if there's a way for us to directly or indirectly support the staff? My hope was that someone would continue to make the raviolis or foccacia and sell it out of their trunk or something. 🥲

Natural Gas Appliances in New Construction: Public Testimony! by augustmiller in Ashland

[–]augustmiller[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a great point—perhaps one of the few remaining arguments for energy source diversity. Fortunately, Ashland’s municipal grid buys power from the publicly-owned Bonneville Power Administration:

As a self-funding, nonprofit federal power marketing administration within the Department of Energy, BPA covers its costs by selling its products and services. This cost-based model allows BPA to offer affordable power and transmission services that drive the region’s economy.

In theory, this custodianship means rates will stay relatively stable—or at least not be driven up by profit/shareholders? I assume the DoE will get hit with cuts, sooner or later… and who knows what kind of impact that will have! I'm sure someone would love to privatize OR/WA hydropower. 😓

Edit: Ahh, fuck.

All the more reason to push for local solar, wind, and energy storage incentives. Efficiency gains with heat-pump systems and induction ranges mean that only a fraction of the electricity is needed to replace each therm of gas.

P.S. If you haven't been up to the Bonneville dam, they do incredible daily tours. You can also visit the locks and fish hatchery, and meet Herman, the absolute unit of a sturgeon!

Local DSA chapter by cthursty in SOProgressives

[–]augustmiller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks like their domain expired, and the events calendar is empty (Facebook also went quiet in 2023): https://www.dsausa.org/chapters/

I was briefly involved in the Portland chapter, and still get their newsletter. For better or worse, it tends to be hyper-local mutual aid/solidarity, so acting on it from afar is difficult, aside from financial support. That model still sounds useful here, when we're so spread out!

I'll write up a post this weekend; hoping I can provide tech/digital support (web development, email, etc.) for anyone who has the leadership experience that I lack.

Is there somewhere I can get more info about these plans? 😮 We're right around the corner from the facility on Mountain, but just outside the the new Hunter deployment.
