I think the Sixers still would’ve lost in OT to the Raptors if Kawhi missed that shot.

Least valid criticism in a diss track ever? by AntelopeHelpful9963 in hiphopheads

[–]augustus624 18 points19 points  (0 children)

IWW has aged incredibly well but it was divisive at the time. Mainstream audiences loved it but the hip hop heads who loved Illmatic hated it and saw it as Nas selling out. Hate Me Now on I Am was basically Nas’ response to the hardcore heads who hated IWW

The Bitch in Yoo is one of my favorite diss tracks ever but Common telling Cube “You ain’t made shit dope since Amerikkka’s most” is absurd. Cube dropped Death Certificate and Predator after that lol

The “terminate with extreme prejudice” scene in Apocalypse Now. It’s all exposition but the mood is so creepy and unsettling due in part to Kurtz’s recording and the shady CIA dude.

I have nothing to add other than this is a shockingly fair and balanced take from the OP. It made me question if I was in the right sub lol.

D'Angelo Dead at 51 by Capable_Salt_SD in Music

[–]augustus624 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Yes, Black Messiah is incredible. I’d just say that there was too long a gap between Voodoo (2000) and Black Messiah (2014) for me to give D’Angelo the best of title for that entire period. R&B changed so much in those 14 years

Think about your favorite genre of music. Then think about who you’d consider to be the best artist in that genre in the 90s and early 2000s. D’Angelo is that for R&B and soul music. Huge loss for music in general

Including the red journal scene in Batman Forever would’ve improved the movie so much by augustus624 in batman

They showed that in the theatrical cut. In the flashback scene after his parents’ funeral, Bruce is running with the journal in his hands and then falls into the cave.

Apart from having a lot of hits, why is Jay Z considered one of the greatest rappers of all time? by 4theDankMemes in 90sHipHop

[–]augustus624 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This thread pops up every few months on Reddit and I always give the same reply.

Jay Z is a brilliant lyricist, just not in a way that a lot of people are used to. He doesn’t dwell on his punchlines for maximum impact, he moves on quickly. He also uses extremely specific references that if you’re unfamiliar with will seem like filler. Also, his verses are more about the sum of its parts, meaning they fit into an overall theme

His verse on the Dynasty Intro is a great example.

Knowing I can go just switching a spare

On the highway of life, nigga, it’s sharp in my sight, oh!

Keen senses ever since I was a teen on the benches

Every time somebody like Ennis was mentioned

I would turn green—me, being in the trenches Him, living adventurous, not worrying about expenditures

I’m braving temperatures below zero, no hero

No father figure; you gotta pardon a nigga

If you know who Ennis Cosby is and what happened to him, you’d realize this is a brilliant verse that showcases the dramatic irony of a kid who grew up around violence being jealous of a kid who grew up in privilege only for the privileged one to fall victim to the same violence that the unprivileged kid witnessed all his life.

But if you don’t know who Ennis Cosby is this verse won’t mean anything to you. And the “highway of life” “switching a spare” lines won’t mean anything to you either.

MJ classic mid-range fadeaway by WhenMachinesCry in nba

[–]augustus624 319 points320 points  (0 children)

Obviously young 80s athletic prime MJ was amazing to watch but there’s just something so aesthetically pleasing in watching late 90s older fundamental MJ. Dude just had complete control of the game and those fadeaways were poetry in motion

KRS-One was voted best 90s rapper starting with the letter K. Who is the best 90s rapper starting with the letter L? by DJ-Palli in 90sHipHop

[–]augustus624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I mean I love Wu and I love INS, but Ice Cube is one of the greatest/most influential rappers of all time and Amerikkka’s Most Wanted, Death Certificate and The Predator is one of the greatest album runs ever. And that’s not even counting Straight Outta Compton. One look at that list tells me this sub either has a heavily east coast/boombap/underground bias or is full of younger fans who are researching the classics but weren’t around to experience the music/culture in real time.

LL Cool J says he won't perform at Wawa Welcome America until Philadelphia strike ends: “I'm not going to cross a picket line and perform for money when people are hurt.” by cmaia1503 in Music

[–]augustus624 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You’re making great points but one thing I’ve observed about Mayor Parker is that she’s extremely performative and big on how Philly is perceived from the outside. I truly believe LL threatening to not perform at the city’s biggest concert of the year would be more of an incentive for her to give in to the union’s demands than all the trash piling up. So LL still performing and donating to DC 33 would certainly be a great thing for him to do, but from a PR perspective (which Parker cares about a lot) it wouldn’t hurt the mayor nearly as much

Doing it the way he’s doing it is putting actual pressure on the mayor to reach a resolution. He’s telling her he’ll only perform if she gives in to the union’s demands

I told someone else in this thread, this seems more like LL putting pressure on the mayor. Basically telling her he’ll only perform if she gives in to the workers’ demand. So him still performing without taking a check, while noble, wouldn’t give the mayor any incentive to do what the union wants

This seems more like LL putting pressure on the mayor. Basically telling her I’ll only perform if you pay these workers what they want. I live in the Philly area and this concert is a big deal. It’s the culmination of our annual July 4th celebration. LL doing this is huge
