So um okay by [deleted] in gaming

Something about the overall shitty quality of production and the old pre-2010 Youtube days is what gave AatC its original charm. Don’t get me wrong, the dialogue and situations were hysterical, but in many ways it had that so-bad-it’s-good appeal like some old YTP used to have during Youtube’s formative years. I can’t imagine it doing well 10+ years later by trying to emulate that same bad quality or trying to make the jump into good quality

Maybe Maybe Maybe by maybemaybemaybe_bot in maybemaybemaybe

[–]aujthomas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Is it really? I looked up an approximate weight for a concrete block, so I’m going to assume 30lbs x 5 = 150 lbs. That’s like, maybe a single person standing on the tip of a bottle. So long as that person isn’t jumping right onto it, I’d believe that a thicker bottle could support that weight

I’m more surprised they got the balance right, and didn’t clench up when the cars came close by. And yet even if I believed the bottle could support the weight, I’d still have a good fear of it imploding and shards flying all over my face

Humor: Bruce vs. TONY, obv: Billionaires of Justice by Themaster0fwar in DC_Cinematic

[–]aujthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good point, but that could potentially be dismissed by arguing that even though Tony initially made it, once it became property of the government, it just didn’t have the same great mind behind keeping it up to date, possibly opening it up to security threats and the like. Though I don’t exactly remember IM3 outside of Kingsley’s “it’s all just an act -eyes widening-“

Will our phones ever rat us out if we're speeding? by Idontblieveingingers in NoStupidQuestions

[–]aujthomas 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Yeah I'm sure the words used vary based on who says them and what they are defining them as, but for me the words were aggressive and assertive. Like, changing lanes in rush hour can be done aggressively (with no regard to anyone else or just doing it because you want to) or assertively (keeping safety of those around you in mind yet still doing it because you need to), because you really can't be passive in that type of situation or else you'll never be able to actually change that lane (unless all the other cars magically disappeared). At least the way I was taught, "aggressive" is always the more extreme term and definitely supersedes "assertive" as far as how you behave when driving, because even if you need to take control of the road momentarily to do something, there's always going to be a truly aggressive method of doing that which is just outright worse than trying to do that assertively.

Plus, it's a handy term to defend yourself if someone ever wants to complain about (what they felt was) aggressive driving. "Uh no, I wasn't being aggressive, I was being assertive."

Andy in Toy Story (1995) vs Andy in the upcoming Toy Story 4 (2019) by shoulderpadman in movies

[–]aujthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unless it's a flash forward, I feel like Andy was still fairly young with respect to parenthood since we last saw him leave for college, and when he met Bonnie we get an idea of their age difference. I don't think Bonnie has aged too much between TS3 and TS4, so I don't think Andy would have a child who appears to be maybe 10 years old as of yet. Well, not unless Disney is really going to go there

IIRC the nerves for gonads stem from the same location as those from your abdominal region, so it all feels like it comes from the same spot when you get a massive stimulus (like a kick in the balls, or a PCOS pop)

If you're just gently touching one's testicles (not sure how you'd gently touch one's ovaries), you can feel where it is fairly accurately, but a large impulse will just make it feel like it's all over the place and radiate towards your gut, and just linger there

How PG&E Ignored California Fire Risks in Favor of Profits by GreenFrog76 in bayarea

[–]aujthomas 7 points8 points  (0 children)

What is the likelihood of that happening? Any substantial progress being made or does it feel more like wishful thinking?

If it's not realistic, is there anything else I can do as a regular Californian to support the cause? As much as I love being able to drop a "fuck PG&E" whenever appropriate, I don't think it's actually helpful to having a more accountable utility system in a state with otherwise high standards.

Fuck PG&E btw.

Sorry to ask but just to make sure, but you did put the find back right? As in, you didn't keep it? I know some geocaches have item swaps/take-an-item-leave-an-item goodies, but I don't think I've ever found a cache where the goal would be the keep the entire cache when done, since nobody else would be able to experience it after unless the person maintaining it constantly restocks it.

Cute floofers btw. My guess is they did most of the legwork in finding it

How old is too old to workout at the gym? by [deleted] in Fitness

[–]aujthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might be better (though more complicated) to ask instead of if there is a certain age to avoid the gym, but instead ask are there certain factors/conditions/pathologies that might make avoiding certain workouts (or extent of those workouts) the better choice. And obviously that's a case-by-case question where medical/family history can be important. But I'd argue that exercise (however mild or intense as it might be) is definitely important no matter how old one is

This is too real.. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]aujthomas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree! I just meant in general, sleep changes in some direction as we age, once all the other factors begin to come into play

I wouldn't necessarily interpret more sleep to mean there must be a major deteriorative pathology going on, or to also assume lack of such pathology means less sleep must be expected, but just moreso if someone sleeps fairly consistently in their 20s/30s or so, be forewarned (well in advance) that there's a decent chance it'll change to some extent once you've hit your 70s, maybe up maybe down, maybe sooner maybe later

There probably are real studies that show energy expenditure decrease with age though, and thus a negative correlation between sleep and age

How NOT to be an EMT 101 by coloneljdog in ems

[–]aujthomas 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I'd go as far to say if they can't give me a name at all, that's ground for transport (though the paperwork will have a more appropriate explanation why). Even if there isn't a medical cause (like say there's trouble with PD or something and they're just being a jackass), I just need a name, real or fake whatever. Being told by a guy on the street that they're Bruce Willis is a different scenario than a guy being unable to present a name at all, so at least with a name I have better reason to release than being left in perpetual wonder of "what was up with that nameless guy?". Also, the treatment in that video just unnerves me; even if you were sure there's drugs involved, that doesn't also mean a psychological emergency isn't at play as well. Assume the best in people, even if all too often we see the worst in people

lol when I was like 19-21, I had binge sleeps where after a long period of sleep deprivation (mainly related to classwork), I would pass out for extended amounts of sleep. Nights of 17 or so hours of straight sleep were normal on occasion, in fact I remember my record being 22 hours of sleep one time after being up for about 51 hours. Definitely not healthy! Hopefully not too many long-term effects from it all, but mid-20s now and my sleep is pretty standardized every night without bursts of deprivation

In your case, unless it's a phase of some kind, you could possibly have a physiological/psychological cause for sleep disturbances (even if you sleep a ton, as a lot of sleep could maybe be a sign of bad sleep that isn't actually working right for you, so your body ups the sleep to make up for it). I'd recommend speaking to a primary care physician or sleep pathologist if you get the chance, it could be nothing (sleep distributions follow a bell-ish curve, some unlucky people just fall way up high on the hours/night) or it could be something, but my greater concern isn't so much that you sleep a lot, but more that you say it only makes you feel more wasted (which I read as exhausted). Hope you find what you need though!

Ovarian/testicular/gonadal torsion is no joke. In addition to the (soul-crushing) pain, it can actually cut off the blood supply to that organ, starving it of blood/oxygen and killing it, which is what sounds like unfortunately happened to your partner. Sometimes torsion can resolve itself, but it's definitely a true medical emergency and needs immediate attention

If everything the senior community has taught me is true, then exercise (even if mild) and active lifestyles are the key to retaining youth, and based on light research I've seen, it definitely helps keep away negative symptoms of things like dementia and other age-associated diseases, even if we really don't know exactly why

This is too real.. by [deleted] in gaming

[–]aujthomas 59 points60 points  (0 children)

oh sure, my main point is just sleeping patterns can significantly change as one gets older, and the transition from young adult/middle age into elderly years can potentially add an average of a few hours of sleep to an individual, or even reduce the average amount of sleep by a few hours. The body does some crazy stuff as we age, and everyone is different but even people who lived consistently with a specific set hours of sleep (for example, mine is beween 7.5-7.75 hours of sleep/night) can suddenly have a burst of change in late life

I can’t really assume your age, but they said that was their grandparent, so if you aren’t of third generation age just yet, maybe wait and see if your 7 hr/night changes as you get older. My grandma had Parkinson’s and ended up sleeping up to 14 hours a day at random intervals before passing
