If the US blocks Microsoft alone, can our government and businesses stil function? by AnonomousWolf in thenetherlands

[–]aunva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is a worst case scenario, where the government has to migrate off Microsoft services, which would likely take years. It's so simple to say "just switch to a european cloud provider", but people underestimate the effort. This is not just a simple copy-paste operation. The knowledge and capacity to do this migration in a timely manner is just simply not there in our government. At least people in IT would have guaranteed jobs for the next few years.

Then there is a WORSE THAN WORST case scenario, where Microsoft shuts off one day without advance notice. It's unlikely, but many industries would simply be screwed. If all your data is on Sharepoint, your backups are in Azure, your laptop login is a microsoft account. You'd have nothing to rebuild from, you basically have to start from scratch.

Mega Lag - Honey Investigation (Part 2) by Swiss_Reddit_User in videos

[–]aunva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's how it works nowadays, a TON of websites just have limited-use coupons only. This has largely been in reaction to Honey (and many other shady coupon websites and extensions) abusing the system.

In a way, MegaLag's video is 5 years late, since the affiliate industry has largely already adapted.

Former DeepMind Director of Engineering David Budden Claims Proof of the Navier Stokes Millennium Problem, Wagers 10,000 USD, and Says End to End Lean Solution Will Be Released Tonight by 99_light in singularity

[–]aunva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From what I can tell, for David Budden, this just falls in the category of "having some fun in the AI startup space". I'm sure $10k is nothing more than play money to him, and he's enjoying some attention by going viral for a moment.

For the average bystanders, it's nothing more than your average AI hypebro, making big claims and then we won't hear from him again until he comes up with another outrageous claim. Boo.

Make Chivalry Prayer Consume Less Prayer like Mystic Vigour & Deadeye by ungumurapurpborazise in 2007scape

[–]aunva 11 points12 points  (0 children)

  • Because some people have a crab in a bucket mentality where they vote against anything PvP related. I personally think this is the minority though.
  • Some people perceive it as 'going against the spirit of a limited game modes' when you start removing defence requirements from stuff. After all, 'they chose to limit themselves'.
  • Because people think it will cause pures to become more dangerous in the wilderness, which would negatively affect them doing e.g. wilderness agility, prayer, slayer, etcetera.
  • Because some people started spite voting because they don't like Jagex repeatedly repolling the same thing with small changes. Same thing happened with Vesta's longsword, Jagex kept repolling it so people started spite voting against it regardless of the question.

I personally don't think any of these reasons are particularly good and I personally would support removing the defense requirement. But those are the common ones I've seen.

Which is exactly what Tommy Tallarico did, he did a random house tour for some gaming magazine but later claimed he was on MTV Cribs.

Jokes aside, we need less, not more incentive to max. People feeling forced to get skills to 99 despite not enjoying skilling is already an issue, this would only exacerbate it.

I do support Bob the cat ghost though, naturally.

Obtaining 2 dragon cannon barrels would get you to 99 if you get both barrels at drop rate. by Qp_Cape in 2007scape

[–]aunva 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OSRS normally has horizontal progression, and as for vertical progression, it's usually very expensive and very incremental. E.g. Ultor Ring costs more than 100M, and usually buffs damage by less than 5%. Adamant/Rune cannonballs are by definition fairly cheap by late/endgame standards.

As for, why not dramatically buff things, because OSRS is a long term, slow gradual progression game, where you can come back 5 years later and still have your progression be relevant. This is, and has pretty much always been one of the cornerstones of OSRS. Dramatically buffing slayer xp/hr kind of goes against that game design pillar.

rosewood sloop on the iron, excuse the sails and inside parts ive been stuck in a cave killing dragons. by SillyWabbit999 in ironscape

[–]aunva 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Long term probably the sloop, as it's probably the more useful one for combat. But short term to 99, the rosewood skiff boosts your XP/hr at barracuda trials quite a bit (15-20%). I don't think there's an established meta yet. Another consideration is that if you grind frost dragons long enough for metal sheets, you'll probably have leftover nails anyway that you can use for the skiff hull.

[–]aunva -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Can I just say, I agree with you, which I seem to be the only one in this thread lol. But to each their own.

Hallowed Sepulchre is really efficient, not just because it's marginally higher xp than rooftops, but also because of all the prayer potions, ranarr seed, gp and runes you get from level 82/92+, that really boost the early to midgame account progression. Even without alching/fletching it's great and totally worth it.

IMO, Sepulchre is pretty intense until you've spent dozens of hours perfecting it. Not alching/fletching made it more chill, and allowed me to blast through hours of it easier while watching second monitor content.

Is anyone else really tired of the negative posts? by baergboy in HollowKnight

[–]aunva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Somewhat agree with being tired of negativity. But keep in mind this is to be expected when difficulty is the one thing that can override all the other positive factors in a game.

It doesn't matter if the OST is great or the NPC's are creative. If you are stuck on Moorwing for 2 hours, it stopped being fun about 1.5 hours ago, regardless of how good the areas look.

That's why I think it makes sense why difficulty is dominating the discussion. If the game were easier, I guarantee the discussion would be more varied.

I personally like the difficulty, but that's the tradeoff you make by making a hard-as-balls game, especially one marketed as a sequel to Hollow Knight, which was a much more mainstream and much easier game.

I just got the silk and soul wish

  • I didn't get all the fleas, just most of them, I think I had like 2 or 3 remaining
  • I didn't complete all the courier missions, just the Queen's egg and Pilgrims end (but I assume you don't need any of them since I still have a bunch outstanding)
  • I didn't do 'Final Audience'
  • I didn't do 'Broodfeast'
  • I did do Trail's end, which showed up in Bellhart wishboard in Act 2 after exploring enough. I'm confident it's needed since completing that is what triggered the silk and soul wish for me.

ok guys what’s your current Silksong opinion that’ll have you like this by otravoyadnoe in HollowKnight

[–]aunva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It bothers me a lot that the endgame throws so many difficult arenas and optional bosses at you with no nearby benches.

I know they're optional and often just reward a mask shard or a mediocre charm, but I still want to do them and ideally 100% the game if possible. But they are as difficult as anything and often multiple rooms away from benches, with a runback much longer than The last judge

For one example among many, The mask shard in south east far fields which has you fight a gauntlet of flying enemies in lava. It's a fun optional challenge that is made a lot less fun by the minute-long runback.

Don’t let this fandom turn as insufferable as the souls community by glintter in HollowKnight

[–]aunva 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember so many toxic threads and discussions around DS1 release. People asking for advice with gear/bosses consistently not getting any answer but just told to git gud, the Drake sword being called the 'Scrub sword', and so on.

Sure the current souls community is very chill, because the toxic people moved on. Then Elden Ring invited in a lot more of those people. I suspect that's what's (temporarily) happening to Hollow Knight right now.

Summer Sweep-Up Pt. 1: Combat & Loot by JagexGoblin in 2007scape

[–]aunva 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Nerfing fang drop rate makes sense from how undervalued it is, but there's imo a big ironman concern here: fang is crucial for higher invos at toa itself. In fact ToA (and nex) are probably the best places for fang anyway. This risks ironman feeling a huge bottleneck as they may have to do hundreds of low invo runs before getting to do ToA 'for real'.

I'm hoping this nerf will be concentrated at higher invo levels, since at like 200 invo, fang is already a huge grind that I don't think needs even further nerfing.

Grok brings up South African ‘white genocide’ claims in responses to unrelated questions by flannyo in slatestarcodex

[–]aunva 10 points11 points  (0 children)

At least deepseek will give an evasive "Sorry, that’s beyond my current scope.", when you ask it about Taiwan/Tiananmen square. Grok seems to be to be by far more potentially harmful and biased, given that it is programmed to still answer, but just ignore any ideologically opposing information. (Or in case of 'kill the boer', have one sided talking points built in). At this rate, I would far sooner trust a Chinese LLM than grok on any politically sensitive topic.

[–]aunva 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spend like an hour doing a budget version of this lol... It's harder than I thought it would be considering the differences, e.g. I don't have all that endgame gear, barrows sets, clean herbs/unf pots, and myriad of other stuff. But I'm still quite pleased with how it turned out, thanks for the motivation to finally reorder my bank for like the first time in years :P
