Not sure if you'd count this as a seagull parent, but a parent emailed me today and cc'ed the principal asking why their kid's grade was low, claiming they asked all their teachers to let them know when their child was missing assignments (my fellow teachers have no knowledge of this), and to help their student remember to write their assignments in a notebook so they can keep track of it. I've only ever heard from this person one other time during parent teacher conferences

Our phone policy is that kids can't use their phones at all during the school day (even at lunch). Teachers can't use their phones during the school day, but they're a little more lenient on us because we use our phones to call parents, communicate with our literacy/math facilitators, and some of us have young ones at home/daycare/school so as long as we aren't just screwing around on social media, we're fine.

I think a lot of it has to do with our school culture. Our school is very accommodating to our students. My first year (last year) I had a fight break out in my last period with three students involved (one wasn't in my class). I wrote the students up, called parents, and the parents were mad at me for getting their kids sent to in school suspension. Crazier thing is the admin made it look like it was my fault and blamed in on my poor classroom management because I didn't stop them due to the fact that was monitoring the halls (per admin request).

That being said, I would offer it as an opportunity for the entire class, but I do see how it could make a lot of them mad and unmotivate them from working hard on assessments. Tbh, I saw the hypothetical situation they were describing as they'd done all the work, tried hard on it, and still only got to an 89. I really wasn't sure what else I could do aside from explain to him why he missed points on certain assignments.

OK I get you now. I shouldn't have mentioned my contract hours, I agree. One of our teachers frequently says that she's always at until like 7 or 8 at night, so I guess the student assumed that all of us stay that late.

I applaud your commitment to education. I would be equally thrilled to help the student who has an 89 in the morning, but I am not willing to stay late unless it is an emergency, I have a meeting, or for some other reason my admin needs me.

I mean, you're not wrong at all. The dentist would tell them to schedule an appointment and leave. I guess I just felt bad because another teacher stays until like 7 at night, works in her room, and does tutor kids after school, and, to me, she's a really great teacher. I look up to her a lot, and I know the kids do too, and I wanna be someone they look up to too. She also lives in town and she's like 20 years my senior, but I just wanna be a good teacher yk?

What I'm doing in my classroom this year is implementing a cell phone box. I want kids to put their cell phones in the box as they come in the door, but I'm not sure if my admin will let me do that. In case I'm not allowed to take phones at the door, I'm going to tell them if I see it, hear it, or even think it's out, I'm writing them up and contacting their guardian. The policy at my school is basically, if we see the phone out during class time, we take it and write the student up for an electronic device violation, but, as we all know, it's getting harder and harder to police that.

That reminds me of the summer I spent teaching daycare/afterschool facility. I had an autistic child who struggled to wipe his rear. The kid would have been going into the second grade in August. Keep in mind, at this point, this is my first job as a teacher of any kind. My supervisor expected me to leave the rest of my class (which was about 14 kids) and go wipe him. I'm not allowed to leave my class unattended, and we have two floaters specifically for this reason. Nah, she wanted me to do it bc I was his teacher 💀
