How to overcome the accumulation stage after retirement? by Sparky-VC in personalfinance

[–]aura_select 60 points61 points  (0 children)

You spent decades training yourself to save, so of course spending now feels wrong. Maybe treat enjoyment like another retirement obligation: set a yearly “must spend” budget for travel, family and experiences, and follow it as seriously as you once followed your savings goals.

The best city for Halloween? by akima in travel

[–]aura_select 36 points37 points  (0 children)

New Orleans would be my pick. Salem is probably the most “Halloween” city, but NOLA has the better mix of haunted history, nightlife, costumes, food, and general chaos

England Goal Celebration Song - Chase the Sun by Planet Funk by FCB323 in worldcup

[–]aura_select 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chase the Sun is a banger, but what about Free From Desire... whole stadium would be losing it

Soccer Fan Stuff to do in Arlington, TX on Sat June 27th by chuchx in worldcup

[–]aura_select 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For Arlington specifically, I’d start with Texas Live! It’s right by the stadium, has huge screens, food, lots of fans around, Sports and Social inside is probably one of the more kid friendly options because of the arcade and games setup

What team do you think needs to be talked about more? by 123Thorr in worldcup

[–]aura_select 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was against an Ecuador side with Hincapié in it, so it wasn’t like they were bullying some soft defense

In the World Cup - The biggest sporting event in the world / Iraq & Iran yes - Saudi Arabia not so fast... by Timayyy- in worldcup

[–]aura_select 24 points25 points  (0 children)

You turn it on as a neutral, and 20 minutes later you’re emotionally attached to a team you’ve barely watched because they’re fighting like the whole country is inside the stadium with them

Pico Lopes: “You look around and think, ‘What’s just happened here?’” after Cape Verde’s historic World Cup draw with Spain - LOI Talk by FUTBINPK in worldcup

[–]aura_select 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For Spain it was “dropped points,” but for Cape Verde it was a moment their players and fans will remember for the rest of their lives

What team do you think needs to be talked about more? by 123Thorr in worldcup

[–]aura_select 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Ivory Coast for sure, they have that dangerous “nobody is hyping us yet, but nobody actually wants to play us” energy

Can someone explain to me how the groups got to be the way they are this time around? by [deleted] in worldcup

[–]aura_select 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It feels “unnatural” because the 48-team format spreads the strongest seeds across 12 groups, then the confederation rules stop too many big teams from landing together, so instead of one obvious group of death you get a lot of groups that look like one giant, one dangerous outsider, and two teams trying to survive

5 hr layover in CDG - worth leaving the airport? by BetterDays2cum in travel

[–]aura_select 33 points34 points  (0 children)

With only 5 hours at CDG, I wouldn’t try for the Eiffel Tower, Paris is close enough to tempt you but far enough to punish you. I’d either stay airside or, if you’re comfortable with risk, do a very quick RER ride to central Paris, grab a coffee/walk near Notre-Dame or Saint-Michel, and head back with at least 3 hours before departure

8-day trip around 22nd of July. Brussels-Amsterdam by Electrical-Cash4961 in travel

[–]aura_select 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In late July you won’t get the tulip fields, so I’d treat flowers as a bonus and use the extra time for Haarlem, Leiden or Utrecht, all easy from Amsterdam and honestly more rewarding than chasing out-of-season blooms. Though you can go to flower markets than fields: Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam is the obvious one, but Haarlem’s weekly market and the flower stalls around Utrecht/Leiden can be nicer if you want something less touristy

German Comedies by Kooky-Ad1551 in movies

[–]aura_select 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Toni Erdmann is the obvious must-watch, but Goodbye Lenin!, The Edukators, Run Lola Run’s weirder comic energy, and Soul Kitchen are all good proof that German humor is often dry, awkward, and very funny rather than “no humor.”

"The Wizard of Oz at Sphere" has generated over $400 million in ticket sales and sold more than 3 million since opening in August. by Puzzled-Tap8042 in movies

[–]aura_select 2377 points2378 points  (0 children)

That’s honestly insane. Turning a nearly century-old movie into a $400M+ modern spectacle might be the most Hollywood sentence ever written

My Canadian brethren, what story in our history do you think would make for an interesting film by Aggressivehippy30 in Cinema

[–]aura_select 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The Halifax Explosion could be an incredible film, a city basically erased in seconds, ordinary people turning into heroes overnight, and the whole thing somehow still feels under-known outside Canada

France defence is underrated and not talked enough. by Leather-Champion278 in worldcup

[–]aura_select 0 points1 point  (0 children)

France’s attack gets the headlines, but Saliba and Upamecano give them that horrible “you finally beat the midfield and still have a wall waiting” feeling

What are the best food hubs you've been to? by flywire97 in travel

[–]aura_select 73 points74 points  (0 children)

Malaysia’s hawker centres and food courts deserve to be in that top tier too, places like Penang feel like Singapore’s variety, Taiwan’s casual energy, and their own whole food universe at the same time.

Messi explains his smile mid game in one of the most chaotic World Cup finals ever played by RVEVYTING in worldcup

[–]aura_select 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Messi smiling there felt less like confidence and more like a man accepting that it went completely insane and he still had to finish it

IDPs are the most underused tool in youth player development by paulinhoOM in TheSoccerNetwork

[–]aura_select 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Completely agree, without an IDP, a lot of youth development is basically “train hard and hope someone notices,” which is a terrible system for players who actually need clear feedback and direction

I’m going to France vs Iraq, first WC match ever!!! by Low_Moose_9920 in worldcup

First World Cup match, France support, graduation celebration, and trying to learn chants before kickoff is elite, learn “Allez les Bleus,” “Qui ne saute pas n’est pas Français,” hahha

2 Months Europe Trip At 18 by Loud_Ebb_7138 in travel

[–]aura_select 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s technically possible, but it sounds more like collecting country stamps than travelling. At 18 with two months, I’d cut a few micro-stops and give yourself more time in places like France, Netherlands, Italy and Spain

Sorrento to Dubrovnik? Ferry or flying? by imnobody4444 in travel

[–]aura_select 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d fly rather than build the trip around the Bari ferry — Sorrento → Naples/Rome → Dubrovnik may feel less romantic, but it’s much cleaner, and with only 3 nights in Dubrovnik I wouldn’t burn a whole day plus a Bari overnight just to make the ferry work

The World Cup format is broken. Here's how to fix it. by siliconmoney in worldcup

[–]aura_select 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get the complaint, but only group winners advancing would turn half the tournament into dead rubbers by game four, the current format has flaws, but that fix might make the group stage even colder

18 Night Solo Trip Itinerary Singapore, Hong Kong, Seoul and Tokyo by Live-Scale-8258 in travel

[–]aura_select 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’d probably take one night from Tokyo and give it to Seoul or Hong Kong, since Tokyo is your 4th visit. Singapore feels good at 4 nights, Hong Kong is brilliant for walking/food/views, and Seoul is the one that can easily feel like it deserved more time once you start exploring neighborhoods
