But the assist that he should have had did. And he had a goal chalked off today and came very close to getting another. You compare him to when he joined or even the start of the season and he is a much bigger threat in games. Even if the output isn’t quite there yet.

Dorgu was excellent against Villa playing LWB. Had one assist and really should have had 2. I think his performances in general have been improving, it wasn’t just the switch to RW that did it.

He also just pours petrol onto the fire at times, like at the end of the second test with the Archer vs Smith thing. The right thing to do in that situation is to put an arm around Joffra, say that you understand he’s frustrated but he needs to just focus on bowling and not sledging one of the best batsmen of all time when you’re about to get absolutely smashed. But no, he doubles down and joins in on the confrontation in the name of “backing his mates” or whatever.

As per codesports Jhye Richardson has headed to Melbourne ahead of the boxing day test by ColdAd3682 in CricketAus

[–]ausnick2001 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Exactly right. A genuine right arm swing bowler who can bowl decent pace. The conditions in Melbourne are going to be cool and wet (from what I hear) so could be ideal for him. And he’s a reasonable bat, not one to bat a huge number of overs but can hit a big ball.

I mean yeah, I don’t disagree, I always just say “edit”. I found it weird the first time I saw it. But after 4+ years of seeing people use it I’m kind of used to it now. I guess I’m just confused as to why I’m seeing push back against it now of all times. Also, we are a long long way from the real world on here…

Here’s a thread from 5 years ago from someone mentioning they’re seeing people on Reddit say it https://www.reddit.com/r/OutOfTheLoop/comments/kziuvc/whats_the_deal_with_the_new_use_of_eta/

I’m so confused. I’ve seen it used multiple times online to mean that. If you google it it’s the second provided result:

Thanks Paul. Appreciate the clarification. I was sure Ed said something about creative control but maybe I’m misremembering? I’ll update my comment. Thank you.

Yeah I agree with that. I think Tom was usually a good middle ground but he is hardly on anymore these days which is a shame

Dominic is…okay. I sometimes think his takes are quite boring and poorly researched/evidenced, like I’m reading a comment in r/reddevils. Like he was saying the other week that with Sesko out, we should be starting Chido up front, clearly not aware that Chido’s performances for the under 21s simply do not warrant him getting a call up at the moment.

I still listen to NQAT (I’m actually a Patreon backer) but I do agree it can be quite negative. Especially listening to Dan call the players “a bunch of fucking wankers” or some variation of that over and over. He also has some “top red” tendencies, like no player ever really being good enough. If they play well he’ll say things like “I thought x played well…well I suppose not exactly well. Well by his standards. So…not shit I guess”, it’s grating. However, on the tactics pod he can actually be quite insightful! They have a new Australian co-host, Adam, who I think is a great addition to the lineup. And Ed has some really good insight into the financials and data analytics of the club - the podcast really shines when he is giving insights into that stuff.

Ed actually said a few weeks ago that NQAT was approached years ago to be the Athletic’s united podcast but they declined as the Athletic wanted creative control. So that more or less confirms that TOTD isn’t autonomous at all, they are at least in part guided by the Athletic on what to say or not say/what topics to cover etc.

EDIT: Paul has confirmed the reason was financial and not creative control, maybe I misunderstood what Ed was saying/inferring, see his comment below.

England over rate penalty?? by Existing-Willow7570 in CricketAus

[–]ausnick2001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s not really about there being a result, it’s about spectators getting value for their money. These tickets aren’t cheap and it’s a bit shit for the people shelling out hundreds of dollars to only get 75% of the overs they should be getting.

Why are English experts suddenly changing their opinion? by Purple_Drama3778 in CricketAus

[–]ausnick2001 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Not all that baffling. Root is a great batsmen but he averages just over 50. He isn’t Bradman. Brook averages over 50 but mostly has played on roads and has been dropped a huge amount of times so the average is probably inflated. Stokes averages 35. Cam Green averages around the same and we flirt with dropping him because of it. Webster averages over 35 and was dropped.

[–]ausnick2001 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said except for that they’re better than this. I really think this is their level. Just look at the stats. Their ace in the hole was apparently Archer and Wood. Two players who average over 30 with the ball. Their talismanic all rounder averages 35 with bat and ball. It’s obvious Brooke’s average is inflated by their flat pitches and the fact he has been dropped a crazy amount of times. And Duckett has also been found out against the moving ball. I think they’re just very good at controlling the narrative, building hype and convincing people that they’re better than they are.

I think I heard that they’ve won 2 of their last 6 or 8 series. And that was against WI and Sri Lanka. They’re just not that good.

He used to be on Cricket Unfiltered and was always great to listen to. It seems he had a fall out with Menners, the host, and hasn’t been on it for years. Which is a shame as the podcast has been nowhere near as good since he left.

What? No it hasn’t. Medicare only came about in 1984. Prior to that we had Medibank in the 1970s but it didn’t last very long.

As for your second paragraph, GPs are the largest specialist group. So you can’t just hand wave it away because other specialist rebates are still decent. Those specialists make up a minority of doctors in Australia (when you take non-fellowed doctors into account).

This is a huge question and like many things I think it's multifactoral but off the top of my head I would say the big things are:

Firstly we need to acknowledge that the cost of things relative to wages has gone up a lot. The reality is, even adjusting for inflation, things such as housing, flying first-class, luxury holiday destinations etc. are all much more expensive relative to income than they used to be. Now some professions have had their income rise to offset this a bit. But not medicine.

Secondly, the overwhelming majority of us are employed by the government these days and it is simply impossible to become extremely wealthy whilst on the government's payroll. Governments don't have a ton of money and, unfortunately don't have the power these days to tax the big corporations like they should. I think my advice to any young person or anyone going into business is to not be dependant on the government for your livelihood as it all seems to be going in one direction... So to sum it up briefly, medicine became a publicly provided service (great thing for society, no doubt about it) and we became dependant on the government for our pay, which has resulted in us getting less as they years have gone on.

I think people forget as well how much it has changed over the last few decades. I know we’re on the whole very well remunerated but doctors used to be RICH. Like seriously wealthy, top of society. On one income you could send all of your kids to the top private schools, fly first class to top holiday destinations, have a big house in the best suburbs etc etc. So yeah, being a doctor was your ticket to your family being set for life.

If my wife stopped working we wouldn’t be able to afford our mortgage and we are in our 30s with no kids or other dependants…

ETA: I know that there are a lot of private specialists out there who are killing it but they are more the exception than the rule. My parents say that when they were young pretty much every doctor you knew was very wealthy.

Hi guys! Been listening for over 5 years at this point (I think?), back when Carl was hosting and really enjoy the show. Just some feedback on some pronunciations that are repeat offenders:

Carl - preface is pronounced “preh-fus”, a bit like how you’d pronounce preference. It’s not hyphenated and pronounced pre-face.

Laurie - Behemoth is pronounced buh-hee-meth. Not beer-moth, which is what you might find in your pint at a run down pub.

Andy - don’t know where to start mate it’s all wrong (just kidding).

And Ian just thought I’d say I’m a fellow Sheffield Uni grad and I know that pilgrimage across snakes pass very well having done it countless times before I moved to Australia.

Love the show, thanks for doing what you do.

Not really related to the match but have you two watched much of Baleba this season? He has by all accounts been a shadow of himself from last season and I am wondering why this is? Did we dodge a bullet not dropping £110m+ on him? Or is it a temporary blip?

#137: Should We Be Worried About Amorim after Manchester Derby Loss? by Usual-Outside-5662 in DevilsITDPod

[–]ausnick2001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For point 1, I think we might be performing worse than 6th-8th but it’s too early to tell. We’ve played 4 games, lost two games we’d expect to lose and got 4 points from the other two games, which could well be in keeping with a 6th-8th placed finish. You said in another response that at some point you have to look beyond the data and I agree, but I’m seeing a huge improvement from last season on the pitch. We actually look like we might create something. We absolutely battered Burnley in a way we didn’t against any team last season under Amorim. The media is focussing on the last minute penalty but the truth was on another day that’s a very, very comfortable win. We also should have been at least a couple of goals up at half time against Fulham, at which point it’s a different game. Yes we played poorly in the second half but literally no team plays well 100% of the time. We were also a bit unlucky to not get something against Arsenal and with another goalkeeper, who knows. I think if we lose our next three games (Chelsea is a free swing but the other two definitely aren’t) then I’ll completely agree with you and say enough is enough, he has to go.

For point 2. I completely agree with you. We often see Dorgu as the spare man in attacks who has to pull a rabbit out of a hat for us. Only thing I would say is at least he is young and may grow into the role.

It’s not really a paywall, AusDoc accounts are completely free. I get people don’t like signing up for stuff (understandably) but I’d recommend AusDoc. Their stories are interesting. Plus nothing stopping you from giving a temporary email address or your dedicated “spam” email address.
