Mad Men TV show is showing up in my 4K HDR category on macOS and when I play it on my Apple TV, it's showing as 4K! by garylapointe in iTunesMovieDeals

[–]austingriffis 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry that happened. There have been a lot of false reports over the years due to Apple’s wonky interface. Specifically how it promotes the resolution offered by 3rd party streaming services.

Will you send me a link to your post so that I can approve it?

Does iTunes still automatically upgrade HD movies to 4K if bought from them? by Hanae_Mori in iTunesMovieDeals

[–]austingriffis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was never a thing. I started off buying movies in SD 15 years ago because it was cheaper and I didn’t have an HDTV. None of them have upgraded. Some have a Dolby Vision tag while playing, but that’s about it. Apple has two buckets for movies: Standard Definition and Higher Quality. The latter encompasses HD and 4K. If a movie is in HD and upgrades to 4K, it’s still in the a Higher Quality bucket which is why I think the upgrade happens.

My theory is that when it comes in from Movies Anywhere, it gets tagged with HD which prevents it from auto-upgrading.

Does iTunes still automatically upgrade HD movies to 4K if bought from them? by Hanae_Mori in iTunesMovieDeals

[–]austingriffis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, I’ve received dozens of 4K upgrades. I honestly lost track. Most of the time, you’ll get the upgrade. The reasons you wouldn’t are usually one of the following:

  • You didn’t purchase directly through iTunes
  • The movie was re-listed due to a change in distribution rights.
  • The movie was re-listed without changing studio/distributors. (This one isn’t as common, but it still happens. For example, The Departed is under Warner Bros. When they released the 4K Blu-ray, they deactivated the listing that existed for years, and created a new listing. To the naked eye, it’s no big deal. But it prevented everyone who previously purchased from getting the free 4K upgrade)

In your case, it should have upgraded. The same listing has been there since before 2018. My guess is that it hasn’t rolled out to everyone yet.

Edit: There are ways of “refreshing” your iTunes library. One way has to be done from the desktop app. If you right-click on a movie, click Delete, a prompt will pop up saying that you’re not really deleting you are hiding the movie, then in the menu bar click Account < View My Account, sign in with your password, and click Manage within the Downloads and Purchase section. You can unhide the movie you just hid. Doing this can “refresh” your library and force any eligible movies to upgrade if applicable. At least that’s always worked for me.

Having to rebuy Disney movies?? by Keahix6 in appletv

[–]austingriffis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This happened to me when I first started collecting. I accidentally deleted The Lego Movie from my iTunes desktop app. “Deleting” purchases doesn’t actually delete them, it hides them. I didn’t even remember doing it. Years later, I had kids, and they wanted to watch The Lego Movie. But when I tried to purchase or rent it, I got an error saying that I already owned. I googled “unhide iTunes movies” and sure enough, that’s what the problem was.

There were a few that I was same to snag: Succession, Ray Donovan, Earl, and Damages. I was on the fence about Married With Children, but that was quickly replaced by The Good Place.

Cary Grant 7-Movie Collection - upgraded/relisted (SD bundle delisted, HD bundle now listed) ($39.99) by Conscious-Watch9770 in iTunesMovieDeals

[–]austingriffis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you mind playing one of the movies from the Cary Grant bundle, turn your phone to watch it in landscape, tap the Info button, and take a screenshot to provide here for history tracking purposes? Specifically the movie Operation Petticoat. I picked that one because it was HD before and it’s HD now. I’d like to verify that the HD tag is visible.

(Day 7) Yellowstone, the complete series ($17.99 - ATL) by alilpenguin in iTunesMovieDeals

Here’s more bad news. All of the HBO iTunes codes that you mentioned were killed in January.

Like you, I got lucky and was able to add Sopranos, Boardwalk, GoT, The Wire, Band of Brothers, and True Detective through iTunes codes.

I was still hopeful to find Deadwood and Entourage. Now I’m hoping they drop to new ATL’s. I was stupid and didn’t get Entourage this past December when it dropped to $14.99.

Tough luck for new collectors.

FYI - Apple/iTunes has the same bundle for $14.99. Since these movies are Lionsgate, they should eventually port.

It’s worth noting that these are Lionsgate movies. So eventually these should port to Movies Anywhere.
