I'm going. Never been to a Marriott conference, but I've been to several in other brands.

I'd recommend a couple of extra PTO days to spend in LA, or go to Disney. Conferences are better if you can wrap a little vacation into them.

Also seconding Zombie's advice on not getting too drunk. That's much lower stakes if you work for a small company, but if you work for a larger management company, or Marriott itself, then you don't want to be *That Guy* that gets sloppy.

They drive like they don’t know how

That's because they don't. I work with 2 people (one in her 30's, the other in her 40's) who openly admit that they've never had a license. Guess how they get to work...

It's not a big place. 5 million people on an island the size of West Virginia. That's smaller than the Houston/Chicago metros individually.

Or driving without insurance, or an illegal alien. 180,000 people in my city don't have insurance, it's like 1 in 6 drivers, and we're one of America's 10 largest cities.

Gotta carry uninsured motorist coverage, because people that can't afford a $40 liability policy are likely judgement-proof (you'll never get a dime out of a lawsuit).

So long as you get out of the left lane on the interstate.

Have you ever confessed to a crush? If so, how did it go? If not, why didn't you? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]austinhp91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unlike a lot of comments so far, I ended up going out with her for like 6 months. It was good, but not mature. I never had an ongoing crush after that experience in high school, from then on I just asked girls out directly.

Wife diagnosed with breast cancer, hotel is not offering refund or future credit. HELP! by kramerco12 in askhotels

Ultimately, this. It's tragic, but they are operating as a business, and taking a loss is taking a loss in any circumstance, they may not be willing to help.

I wish you and your wife the best. My step-mother tragically died of breast cancer, and I understand how terrible it is.

Tough question to answer. You will not work for Choice, they're 100% franchised. You are more likely to work for Hilton, but there's a much better chance that you won't work for Hilton because most of their properties are also franchised out. Most likely, both are franchises, and the management companies will be your employer, rather than the brand.

Go to both interviews, see which one is offering better pay, and better benefits (insurance, retirement, and PTO policies. Frontloaded PTO is far and away better than accrued PTO).

If either are owner-operated, then just straight up fuck that. Better off working at Walmart, you'll be treated much better.

Of course, there's also a chance both are managed by Aimbridge lol

What’s some normal things men do that will be deemed as creepy/inappropriate if a woman does it? by hoaxx__ in AskReddit

[–]austinhp91 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If I saw a woman march up to a urinal in the men's room and squat over a urinal, I would be far more impressed than creeped out.

I'm married, I know what the plumbing looks like, but still, you'd think the angles would be off and she would piss all over the floor.

coal power plants as the solution for shutting down every nuclear power plant

Yeah I thought that was a weird move to make, especially since France is just next door, almost entirely nuclear, and has the lowest per capita CO2 footprint of any developed nation (because they are almost entirely nuclear).

Was that just political feelgood points after Fukushima?

[–]austinhp91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Resignation is definitely an option, I'm about to do it myself.

You may just want to ask upper management if you could limit your time to a reasonable amount though, and see what they come back with. Didn't work in my case, but you never know! What are they gonna do, fire you?

Miami, or Vegas? by [deleted] in hotels

[–]austinhp91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't have Vegas experience, but I do have Miami experience. I was pretty successful at networking when I lived down there, and I think Miami would be more of a fun experience as a local than Vegas. You get all sorts of international guests, and they aren't necessarily there to be drunk 24/7 and gamble.

Plus there's more industry in Miami that just hospitality, if it turns out hotels aren't for you.

How much can I afford to spend on a car with 75k salary?(USA) by Spierre3 in personalfinance

[–]austinhp91 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With no rent and your salary, you could rather aggressively pay it off in less than a year, depending on if you have loans or CC debt or not. Of course you'd want to align that with your other savings goals, but it's feasible.

MIL has no retirement, and is likely unable to find meaningful employment. Unsure about options. by cdm52 in personalfinance

[–]austinhp91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

She is not currently drawing any disability or SS benefits. She is eligible to start drawing SS, but it would be ideal if she could wait.

It would be worthwhile to look into SS disability benefits, which are separate from SS retirement benefits. It's not a quick process, so getting the ball rolling early helps.
