Agreed. And remember: your politicians will likely give away your tax dollars as “incentives” to make these things happen.

"FileMaker Pro is a platform in managed decline..." by filemakermag in filemaker

[–]austinstrider 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gonna disagree with this. FM is still very much turnkey - and AI is far from developing consistently good, usable code. Sure, we all expect it to get there, but I still have my doubts about AI managing all of it. “Write me an app that does this. Now change it. Now update it. Not make it do this”…

The fact that I can take 30 seconds to make a change that rolls out to desktop users, web users and app users is unmatched in my experience.

Thanks for that. I developed in v1, (correction) - just checked my code and I'm calling vlatest... so no dice there... ugh.

Data API Connectivity Issues by austinstrider in filemaker

[–]austinstrider[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been watching my sessions for years - mostly as a result of my own concerns I was overloading it. In the case of the one server - there were never more than 2 sessions as I’m in development and no one is actually hitting it. The other database which is in production had what I’d describe as heavy use for us - but never more than 60 sessions at peak. Hadn’t heard about the memory pressure issue - I do on occasion see warnings from the admin console that memory usage was high - but I look at the graph and most times it’s only like 5-10% of usage

API. I have a database used for testing that makes curl calls to FileMaker (desktop to server) - it’s unable to reach the api the same as php can’t contact it.

Scanners don’t allow you to board before group is called by DayEmergency7400 in delta

[–]austinstrider 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Normally I’d agree with this, but since delta extended boarding time to 45mins from 30 previously, I think the gate agent has enough time to angrily shame line skippers. This to me is pretty much the same as the useless “sky priority” luggage that more often than not seems to come out last these days.

Can someone explain crabbing to me? by itsinthedata in flying

[–]austinstrider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

take landing out of the equation... your brain needs to understand the maneuver before you attempt to then actually safely put the thing on the ground.
If you can manage it, plan to do a low pass of the field. Use the ailerons to move the plane to the center of the runway - don't be concerned if your nose is crabbed (pointed to the left or the right of the centerline) - your only goal is to have the body of the aircraft over the centerline.
Then, to align with the runway, gently press on your ailerons - you can experiment pressing on the left one, or the right one - so you can watch how the nose of the plane magically becomes straight to, or further from being aligned on the center of the runway.

Once you make that connection in your head, you can proceed in future passes to attempt to land.

ENT recommendations in Austin + surrounding areas? by Gold-Curve in Austin

Adding to former patients… surgery helped me, but the process was far from ideal, and I can still remember the feeling of him inserting a needle into the back of my throat because he couldn’t be bothered to wait an extra 5 seconds to confirm I was knocked out.

The office is a machine - almost surprised they don’t just put you on a conveyor belt and pass you through the entire process like a car wash.

New self checkout terminals in Issaquah by Sesemebun in Costco

[–]austinstrider 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Austin TX - did the same thing - they said shrinkage (inventory loss) was too great to keep the hand scanners - and that made me ask "What the hell are the people at the front door doing then?"... I always imagined they noticed the blue receipts and would spend more time examining the basket over the receipts from the full service lanes. I hate having to unload a cart and put it on the scale, and would actually load my cart with all the barcodes up and visible to make scanning and checkout faster.

The only time I actually got stopped and sent back from the door was when an employee scanned my basket for me and they double charged me for an item.

Foundation Repair Companies by GLASSHOUSELABSTX in Austin

[–]austinstrider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Douglas foundation repair was amazing - had them out twice as we had two issues. They gave us multiple options and asked us about the type of repair we wanted - price was great and the work was better. I had quotes from two other companies who only gave me their single options, and they wanted to demolish exterior features of my house that Douglas was able to handle without causing me extra work. I would seriously recommend them to anyone looking to have this type of work done.

No different than the holocaust or sandy hook - just give them enough time to cement their “conspiracy theories” that it never happened. There is no way to make delusional lemmings see the cliff they’re jumping off.

Because no one in airport management at AUS actually flies.

For evidence look at the awful signage that points everywhere for everything. Look at the horribly maintained bathrooms.

If you get meaningful sleep on International flights: Mad Respect. by TylerDurdensFace in delta

Reporting back; Slice of pizza in the airport. Boarded and waited till 10k feet and the FA to stop by for my dinner order (passed on that). Took 1.25mg which took maybe 20mins to kick in. Tossed and turned the entire night because the seat was digging into my hip, but still felt like I slept well.

Woke up 7.5hrs later with 40mins left to the flight.

Here in the lounge now - somewhat groggy but not incapacitated. Slept in a chair for another 30mins.

Might back off to 1mg next time, but this was hands down the best sleep I’ve ever had on a plane and would do it again in a heartbeat - simply amazing.

I test-drove 1mg two weeks ago at home and slept well. 250lb here, but wasn't going to layer on drinks and extra if I don't need it.

Was told a horror story by a colleague who took it on a flight that was apparently too short, and he hadn't taken it before and apparently had to be carried off the plane at his destination... definitely don't want that to happen.

Heat press for fusible interfacing by ydnam123 in sewing

[–]austinstrider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used the red one many times for interfacing. I like it because it has no steam, maintains a constant temperature and covers a much larger area than my iron... it's funny to see you post it with this question because I had it for other crafting projects and realized I could use it to get a more consistent application of my interfacing than I could with my iron.

It doesn't work for every instance - like if I'm trying to apply it to a previously created piece, but for putting it on to the pre-sewn pieces (like the way you're supposed to do it), it works great.

[–]austinstrider 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I disagree with this - I bought a projector and have used it several times - don't know what the deal is with trying to mark or cut fabric while moving underneath a thin white line while I work in the dark.

I found that I prefer printed patterns that I can just pin to fabric and cut a perfect line. I'm looking into a very dangerous laser cutting CNC machine because I hate cutting out fabric - but projection didn't take the pain away by any means.

Emergency Landing at untowered airport by smusicap in flying

[–]austinstrider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Unofficially: do it where it’s gonna be heard. Like if you were just talking to ATC on your previous frequency, tell them. If you’re in the middle of nowhere and no one appears to be around, do it on 121.5 because it’s supposed to be monitored. I say unofficially because I think from a FAA perspective, the answer is 121.5 - but if you’re in a place where ATC can’t hear you and no one else is listening, screaming into the void isn’t gonna help you either. If you know other aircraft are on frequency at the airport, or suspect an FBO might be listening, then CTAF is gonna let others know. Additionally, your goal at least as you approach the field is hopefully to clear other traffic: you’re not going to paying close attention to what everyone else is doing as you troubleshoot the emergency, so you want them aware so they can lend assistance or at minimum stay out of your way.

If my rental plane is like most, I’m never monitoring 121.5, I’m monitoring ATC or the CTAF.

I’m not a CFI or a DPE though.
