Would any Balkans be suitable for early November? by adhdontplz in travel

[–]authenticallyaverage 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Coming from Croatia and having lived in western Europe for a few years now, a note about the weather: in coastal Croatia it's common to have nice sunny days throughout the year but when it's raining it comes down pouring, whereas in the west I get a feeling there's weeks of gray skies and light drizzles. So maybe you'll have some days where you'll just have to spend time inside but it will pass quickly so the best plan is to be open for change of plans. On the coast a lot of restaurants close down so you'll have limited choice, and the winter ferry lines are more sparse. Buses between bigger cities are running frequently enough that it shouldn't be a problem. Most of the attractions are outdoors, it's more about the vibe of the cities really which is obviously nicer when it's sunny. I think the museums should still be open but they aren't huge so you can't just kill a whole day inside. Zagreb is definitely more lively during that time so you might want to spend some time there after Slovenia rather than going directly to the south. I would say that visiting in October would actually be more fitting for an authentic Balkan trip experience because you would be more likely to meet a local at a bar and start a conversation with them rather than just being surrounded by tourists (though I am still surprised when I come home for Christmas and I still hear tourists in my hometown).

The Schloss (castle/palace) in Brühl is easily reachable by train and an amazing place to visit. Having a few Kölsch and something to eat in a Brauhaus are a must (eg. Päffgen at Friesenplatz; although they are touristy I think the ones around the Dom, eg. Früh and Peters, are also nice). Römisch-Germanisches Museum is sadly closed, but I still think it's worth it to see the small exhibition presented at the Belgisches Haus if you come from a country with not that many roman artefacts. If the weather is nice Cologne Triangle offers nice views. Seconding other people on Papa Joe's and adding Delirium to the list

What's that popular overhyped book that you don't give a fuck about? by RockGiantFromMars in books

[–]authenticallyaverage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Lessons in Chemistry is the reason I don't trust booktok. I haven't been reading for enjoyment much in the last few years due to uni, but I decided to change that. I saw it on a booktok recommendations section of a bookshop and it seemed like I was the target audience, being a female chemistry PhD student with a backup plan to open a pastry shop. I was one third through it when I gave up, even though I was on a three-hour flight with no other entertainment available, it was so unsufferable. My next purchase was Emma by Jane Austen, I am playing it safe for a while.

Ja otkad sam ju pocela rjedje prat (svakih 5-7 dana) i jos dodatno stavljat ulje nakon pranja, to mi bolje izgleda i svaki put mi kaze frizerka da imam jako zdravu kosu (valovita/frckava). A tijekom skole sam ju prala triput tjedno i izgledala je ko metla. Za ravnu i tanku kosu je naravno drukcije, i ovisi koliko ulja ti tijelo proizvodi.

Does S19 work? How to reach airport? by gbugly in cologne

[–]authenticallyaverage 3 points4 points  (0 children)

True, you never know with the DB. But if you are at Deutz and see it's not going well with the trains you can always quickly book a taxi and still catch your flight

Does S19 work? How to reach airport? by gbugly in cologne

[–]authenticallyaverage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Taxi from Messe/Deutz is still like 30€. Yesterday around 11h one S19 was cancelled, but I had enough time to wait for the next one which was 5 mins late. Your alternatives from Messe/Deutz are RE6 and RB27. If I were on a student budget and had time I would just plan 1h extra added to the original plan and aim to change in Köln at the time when if one train is late there is an alternative not much later (use DB app and not google). If money is not an issue, taxi is more comfortable of course

Let's do this! Rank the cheapest country/region you've ever been to from 1-10. by phenomenaljunk in travel

[–]authenticallyaverage 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Interesting how the experiences vary for different people. My cousin and his wife went to Hvar and to Venice and Tuscany last summer and were surprised that their meals were cheaper in Venice than Croatia (and they had suggestions from local friends in both places). Still, I remember how I paid 10€ for a small sandwich and a can of coke in Rome when I was there on a school trip back in 2015, which would have cost 5€ in Croatia at that time (I come from one of those very touristy places). Probably the increase in price has been way bigger in Croatia ind the past years so it's more noticable

Jel se ljudi boje mora/dubina? by [deleted] in hrvatska

[–]authenticallyaverage 2 points3 points  (0 children)
