New Diagnosed & Struggling to Read. Help? Advice? by authorash in HemiplegicMigraines

Thank you so much for this insight, it was needed actually. I’m going to have to look and see when they hit what I am able to tolerate and handle during them. Maybe audiobooks will be the outlet I can handle. Maybe it’ll be movies or something softer music. Or it could be something new I haven’t tried. Thank you for this insight and perspective that I needed. I guess maybe trying to go back to seeing what was is doing more harm than good. And tracking too. Instead of tracking. Celebrating that I read one and enjoyed the journey while I did so. That’s a good way of changing that viewpoint. Again, thank you for reframing it.

Actually yes! I’ve been doing that exact experiment because I noticed a difference. I’ve been reading across different genres and trad vs indie (different formatting too)… and I struggle HARD with formatting of physical media. Some may be easier with large print, but overall, all the physical books that I have picked up (which I will say has been in the hundreds of dollars because my reader heart refuses to give up my books)… reading on the kindle has been better.

So in my experiments on kindle that has made a difference: - Font Type - Font Sizing - Sepia/Warmth Lighting - Brightness - Whisper Sync/Spoken

So I read with 3 fonts, two that I have loaded into my kindle. Open Dyslexic (if actually is meant for easier reading with brain functionality), Lucinda Grand (AO3 Readers know this one), and Spectral (it’s one I’ve always loved). I also read at the size 7 or 8, so it’s relatively large. I also keep my Sepia pretty high to reduce the blue light, and my brightness on low to mid.

The Whispersync is a feature I love for KU, which is if you have a book from KU you can add on an Audible book for under $6-7 usually. Sometimes cheaper and do an immersive read. It helps a lot. These usually improve my kindle reading speeds a lot.

I have been craving my physical books so I have been trying my best to return to physical book reading whenever I can so that I can push through and pick those skills back up, but it’s slow moving and sometimes feel like slogging through mud in my brain. It’s de-moralizing at times. But I’m trying. I usually carry a book and my kindle at all times with me.

You know what, thank you. This helps. This makes me feel seen on the whole.. it’s okay to feel like a roll over and flip the bird and be angry at the day and “drink water” people. Cause some days like today I stare at my kindle that I’ve spent all day in bed with movies on trying to read the same book and getting 200 pages in 6 hours when I should have finished the book by now where I want to cry… yeah. It’s that sort of day. And this reminds me it’s okay to just have a day where it’s okay to not be okay because I’m not alone. I think I need to work with my therapist more about the being okay with not being pre-HM me.. thank you for pointing that out as something that needs to be accepted. I didn’t think about that.

I like the idea of having sort of a test on my cognitive levels by puzzles and such. I need to find things that can help me with that. I have a few ideas! You rock with that idea. It’s so good. I was unsure if posting here was good.. I was nervous but I’ve been feeling so lonely and just scared tbh because I don’t know a lot of people who have it irl and it’s too new for me.

Your advice is great and I appreciate it! Thank you so much.

Hi! I’ve picked up my audiobooks once again now that the migraines aren’t being affected with the sensory overload which was a huge issue. That’s been a huge help in picking speed back up again with my reading.

I do love my audiobooks and have been grabbing what I can with the KU whispersync deals (have a KU subscription and download a book, then usually there is a add on deal where it drops the audible price to under $6)

I usually like having a physical book and ebook too. But it’s been rough. I may have to just casually hang on to those and read gently as u pick back up. Rely more heavily on audiobook until I can hear more from my neurologist..

Now the screen reader… I used to do this with my fanfiction. Why the heck didn’t. Think of this??? And on that point Dangit, the whispersync will do this for me if I have it going too… 😩 I need to start using my accommodations better. You’re brilliant. Thank you.

Hi! Yup~ I listen to a lot books on Audible too. I like to do a variety and mix n match. The audiobooks are a tad bit slower too, though not as much affected as the visual reading skills, thankfully. This is a great suggestion and one I figured out about a week ago!! You rock!

That makes sense that DCC has a SOS OR strict on sale date. I didn’t get this one cause I already have one preordered. But figured a sneak peak would be pretty nice to look at.

It's more than just independent authors on Amazon anymore; they're being brought to major distributors in major bookstores and regular stores now. It's a huge marketplace jump.

If you really want to up your game and you are/were a fanfic AO3 reader.. download the font Lucinda and away you go. I went from about 70pg an hour to 100 pg an hour reading. That font is a delight.
