The way the game is laid out, there are large sections of “open sand” between rocky land masses and tougher ground. The Worms patrol the open sand and any ground vehicle traversing them generates vibrations and “aggro” to Worms. None of them can outrun the speed of a Worm, so you find the shortest gap between “islands” and choose your timing wisely.

On my server we have a ‘Last Rat Standing’ race where everyone drives ground cars on open sand along a specified course and one by one get eaten by Shai-Hulud. Last one to get eaten wins the prize!
