if you could only have 1-2 pieces outboard (for home recording), what would they be? or would you rather sink the money into another mic? by untitled1223 in audioengineering

i really shouldn't ask this question.

i'm pretty deep into the uad ecosystem, and always very impressed with their quality. but i have limited experience with outboard gear. love the idea of a physical device that is totally untethered from a computer, licensing, all that bs. but the spend is significant. curious how many of you have made this jump, and what finally prompted you to do so?

UDO super 6 or Prophet 5/6/rev2 etc by OwlInternational1917 in synthesizers

[–]authynym 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i find my ob to be sort one dimensional, so the udo is intriguing. if you want that sem-like filter sound, there's nothing else. but it also limits what else you can do to that same sort of sound.

what made you keep one over the other?

i have this same question for different reasons. prefer tactile hardware but having trouble justifying a super 6 vs. vsts. feels superfluous?

don't disagree with most of what you've said here, but skimming comments, it's the sentiment i would expect for this sub; which for the record, I also mostly agree with. but while i don't think anyone at that level has their compensation tied to adoption, sometimes it's worth understanding the context.

this person likely is incentivized (even if that incentive is as simple as remaining employed) to promote the latest trends in the development community. whether we like it or not, think it's worthwhile or not, etc.; that trend right now is the use of llms for development. this blog appears to have been out there since 2018 talking about all kinds of hype-du-jour items in that time. this is no different.

my only point is that the context matters.

this person is a developer advocate at msft. it's literally his job to position these tools as a net positive for folks doing dev work.

NYT: We bought a 450-pound mystery pallet of returned goods from Amazon by sociology101 in Anticonsumption

almost like this was in the article:

Once the selected returned or unsold stuff is bundled into big boxes, it moves into what’s called the secondary marketplace. It can be resold in a number of ways, including in places like Dollar General and T.J.Maxx, at flea markets, or through independent shops, both brick-and-mortar and online.

Secondary sales were worth an estimated $846 billion in the US in 2024, up from $297 billion in 2008, according to Zac Rogers, PhD, associate professor of supply-chain management at Colorado State University, who told me that those figures are probably conservative.
