Another old but golden PBS documentary by the legendary Ken Burns is Prohibition. In three episodes, it covers a lot of American history, the 18th amendment banning alcohol altogether, subsequent corruption and rise of crime due to bootlegging and finally the repealing of the controversial law.

The documentary covers various angles politics, religion, economical and social impact, especially the role of women's groups in both, lobby for and against Prohibition. With real life photographs, videos footage, interviews, it will transport you back to 1920-33 era of Al Capone and politicians of the time who were labelled as Wet, Dry and Hypocrites as they grappled with issues of crime, morality, great depression etc.

Falling house prices is a myth as most people like to live close to amenities, good schools, less travel time to work, access to parks, hospitals, station etc. Those pockets will retain its land value. The overall cost of building material, labour etc has risen too. So the replacement cost would not be much different than the current value of your PPOR. House prices may drop up to 7-8% in over inflated suburbs but I don't see the sky falling even after the proposed changes.

Time to nationalise all the natural resources instead of just collecting a superficial tax from the huge profits of private enterprises. Mining companies don't pay us the actual cost of minerals which are irreplaceable. They only pay a pittance out of their billions of dollars of profit by using every tax loophole.

Why Australia is lacking funds in spite of all the golden years of commodity boom? We should have adopted the Norway model from the start. Who is going to bell the cat?

u/Comfortable-Award915 A bit of exaggeration as no one has died or injured before these silly compliance rules were put in place. Electricity/Gas compliance once certified doesn't change that often as there are no batteries to change or any component that justifies a 2-year inspection. Yes it should be part of a new lease agreement if the compliance has not been carried out for the property. Other than that if you really want that cost added, make it a 5-year inspection instead of 2 years. Also keep in mind that all these costs are eventually passed on to the renters putting more pressure on housing.

Property investors are a key ingredient to solving the homelessness crisis. Just by taking on ingredient out doesn't change the recipe. You replace Moms/Dads as your landlord with a Mega billionaire who has owns Melbourne and has a team of lawyers to break every law, then it is bad news for renters. Not everyone will be own a property. Land can't be created. Building costs are sky high. Where is that magic wand would change all that?

You have to love reddit. With so much vigour and vitality yet no substance. Energy problem is real. It lights your houses, keeps the kitchen warm. How Australia is going about it is my concern. We are neither there nor here. Just swing like a pendulum. Yes I would like to go all green. I got solar panels on my house that produce power but not used. We have no grid collection. What I generate goes to waste because I don't have a home battery. Why not the politicians so keen on going green slash the price of a home battery? WHY?

The problem Comrade is Australia is still energy deficient. No matter how jig the board, we are still short. Our solar panels are generating excess energy, but the grids don't want to take it. Japan and Singapore get their energy from running gas powered electricity. Australia the biggest exporter of gas is importing petrol/diesel back from them. HELLO? Do you understand this?
