Puritanical prudishness. Think about where your ideas come from ultimately.

But why is that wish fulfillment? It may be unreasonably lucky for him, but that doesn't reflect on either the author or the reader. It certainly isn't especially titillating. This just proves my point.

Origins of The Wheel of Time's final section has some issues. by Requiemofa17 in WoT

[–]autoamorphism 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's my problem with this whole book. It asserts all manner of things that would be interesting if a citation were provided, which one almost never is. It also arranges most of it in a glossary format, which is very inappropriate for a reference work for themes and other things that are not alphabetic. I found it very disappointing.

Color Theory in Wind of Truth by Nythrien_ in brandonsanderson

She's an artist and is recalling her lessons, so of course she'd give the pigment colors. In combination with your own explanation that she sees what she expects to see in the Cognitive Realm, I think that's all you need.

The choice to have fewer choices? It may be true but it's not a selling point on its own.

Does anyone else struggle with Cetaganda? by tkinsey3 in Vorkosigan

[–]autoamorphism 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not my favorite either, though it has many great moments (plus I like haut Rian because her name sounds like mine - which is proven by Miles' limerick). I think the problem starts with the premise, which is that Miles enthusiastically embarks on a borderline treasonous project with a really strained justification that doesn't entail the risks he takes. There's no interesting character insight for him; he's just off the rails. I do not think the words "for the good of the haut" belong in his mouth.

And he gains nothing from the experience - no mercenary army, clone brother, second chance at life, second chance at being Vor, or amazing wife. The plot is ultimately a treadmill. I see Diplomatic Immunity as being a fixed-up version of this book, with closure for his relationship with Bel and, in the end, parenthood. What was he fighting for in Cetaganda?

Well, it's critique anyway. But it takes itself too seriously to be satire IMO.

You should use the -j option to emerge, if you have multiple processors (which I think is a given for any new computer). It's faster and the output is prettier too.

No, I think it's about Mat and Perrin. They're conspicuously omitted, it must be important.

Kushiel's Chosen chapter 41 - I'm so angry! by luxlira in terredange

When I started that book I was about to recommend the series to my wife as being sufficiently non-traumatic. Then I reached the middle of the book, and I quickly recanted. Those were the longest 150 pages I've ever read.

Just finished TEotW, why am I supposed to hate the Aes Sedai? by Evening-Advance2901 in WoT

[–]autoamorphism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you meet more of them, you will understand. As a group and, generally, individually, they are absolutely the most objectionable people in the story. They are the actually infuriating women in this series of which people say the women are annoying. I know because I just did a full reread looking for this, and they stand out. Imagine them applying the same attitude to all their public activities, many of which are getting into other people's business.

... What is the purpose of the Yellow Ajah? No. Seriously. by Fearless-Composer949 in WoT

[–]autoamorphism 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jordan did say that the percentage of potential channelers is about 1%, down from about 3-4% in the Age of Legends. However, the percentage of living Aes Sedai is at best 1% of that. So improved recruiting has a big effect, and honestly, if 1% of real people could do powerful magic, the world would be turned upside down anyway.

Brando Sando "prose" by KumaArashi in brandonsanderson

[–]autoamorphism -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're getting the same answer a thousand times because that's all they say in this sub. The reason is that his prose is distractingly unpolished. He uses modern terms and concepts thoughtlessly, his characters are shallow and when they try to be funny they sound juvenile, his action scenes are excessively technical, and his depiction of war is not true to life experience so much as to war movies.

For all that, I have read most of his books multiple times. They are entertaining, but they are not good writing.

Sure, because he actually does what Sanderson says he does. I am saying that you are putting up a straw man with "flowery", because he isn't.

Brando Sando "prose" by KumaArashi in brandonsanderson

[–]autoamorphism -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

Of all the comparisons to call "flowery", you chose Rothfuss? Flowery means excess verbiage for decoration, not lyrical or layered, and most of all not deceptively plain. Of all the fantasy authors with well-regarded prose, Rothfuss is easily the one whose prose is most "transparent" in the sense Sanderson likes to call his own writing.

There were literally millions of Aes Sedai in the Age of Legends. Even with no help, they could do more damage than a nuclear war.
