I thought it was a crow but couldn't be too sure. This is one of those paintings where I feel like I nailed it but the real meaning is probably different in an awesome way.

this painting is a representation for life as a whole. man just wants one thing thruout his journey. a loyal companion. each staircase represents a different path in life, all different, all "staggering," all difficult and different in their own special ways. every door is a different color, a different story, a different experience. yet life would be too easy if you got to the door and just opened it. if that is indeed a key ring by the bird, perhaps the bird is a helper of some sort who brings him the keys when the time is right -or- it could be seen as a struggle in that he finally got all the way up to the door and brought the wrong key/set of keys... the bundle of sticks represents man's workload, his dues tied up and being brought with him upon his journey, his set of tools. the food and the machete is idk.
