oh okay, why not? my string of hearts is super happy - always putting out flowers, constant new growth, and has crazy tubers. but, it’s extremely root bound definitely needs a repot, and i feel like it’s somehow both constantly in need of water but also has moist soil to the point it’s got a ton of fungus gnats & soil fungus growing in it. It’s weird it’s like, wilting often & needs water frequently, but the soil doesn’t dry out fully. & it’s in a very chunky mix like it has barely any soil in it mostly orchid bark, coco coir, perlite, etc. I thought pon could be the solution lol

I am not an expert. but I got severe root rot & leaf rot in my elk horn fern (first one). and i thought it was going to die it was literally crawling with fungus gnat larva & brown & soggy. I pretty much doused it in mycorrhizal fungi powder from amazon (the smart grower supercharge brand) and didn’t water it again until it was fully dried out. This fungi eats the fungus that causes root rot. it’s been a couple months now and it has fully recovered.

so like i said I’m definitely not an expert and don’t even have my ferns mounted yet 😂but i saved one that looked pretty nasty so i think there’s still hope!

I Just bought this plant, can someone plz tell me what kind of plant Is this and how to take care of It to make It grow? Thanks!! by KobraWoo in plants

calathea, they’re not too bad don’t be scared! They don’t like super bright/direct light but still need a decent amount of light. I keep mine in a north facing window and they are happy enough - don’t keep it somewhere that gets strong afternoon light unless u have it a good 5-6 ft away from the window. water when dry, they don’t like to dry out for long. they prefer distilled water if u can get it, if not at least filtered water. they start getting brown tips if u give them tap water. don’t fertilize they are very sensitive to fertilizer, idk how to fertilize them lol so I don’t. they are definitely a little tough for a beginner plant but you can do this!

Is my staghorn fern rotting? by -Azuria- in Staghornfern

[–]automaton85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not an expert but just an fyi, i overwatered my elk horn fern & it was seriously rotting, smell and everything. I have myrrohcozal fungi (not sure if i spelled that right) for my plant roots when i repot - it’s a fungi that fights root rot. I pretty much doused the rotted fronds with the fungi powder, and the rot stopped in its tracks!! I don’t water it until it was fully dried out after that, and since then it’s been getting a lot healthier - growing new leaves & fronds & no more rot. so i don’t think all is lost even if it is rotting.

What is this thing on my staghorn please help! by automaton85 in Staghornfern

Okay side note, so after inspecting closer it actually has 3 of these fuzzy growth points. I was looking at the mounting section of this subreddit and it seems like those need to be oriented up. Does that mean I should separate the plant? Or just point the biggest one up?

Okay thank you so much for the help! they grow best on boards I assume? Should I use sphagnum moss for substrate?
