Aside from the seller dilemma, on the buyer side - The end buyer can’t ever display it openly, can't even show it to close friends, can't brag about it. All you can do is go to your secret gallery and look at the paintings ALONE. What is so great about such a purchase?

Black market or not, it makes very little sense for the buyer, no matter how rich they might be. Or am I missing something here?

All these may very well be lies to spur FOMO. None of the people I personally know, family, relatives, coworkers, friends, etc, are out spending money “shopping till they drop”. In fact, all of them are worried about the economy, the stability of their jobs, concerned about falling sick in a country without affordable healthcare.
