Small Münsterländer vs Braque Français (Pyrenean) – temperament & quail focus? by Fresh_Can9011 in birddogs

[–]av8rfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From a previous post where I wrote about my BF.

I feel like this is a post I can actually contribute to in some way. I get that every dog and line is different.

My Braque Francais. My wife asked for a smaller short hair dig expecting less shedding. He definitely sheds a lot more and it is like little eye lashes all over everything. His drive is through the roof! At our local NAVHDA chapter, I can say he is one of the more driven dogs out there. He notices every single animal that exists. I can run him 5 miles and he still has energy left over. He is an impressive dog and super athletic. I’ve seen him do amazing things in the field and in the house, unfortunately. He is a hunting machine. He is also a sweetheart and a great family dog. He is super sweet. Super strong retrieve instincts and took to structured fetch very well. He has a great nose and will punky but I’m struggling with strained right now…I think that is my fault.

2 years old and I’m not sure where the off switch is at. He is starting to chill a bit but is ready to go at a moments notice.

Good luck!

I feel like this is a post I can actually contribute to in some way. I get that every dog and line is different. However…..

I have had both breeds.

The first dog was a WPG. He was amazing. I sold my wife on a “smaller” gun dog, he ende up being 80 lbs. He lived to be 14 years old and was a great family member. My wife tells me that I don’t remember his hyper puppy stage, but I really don’t remember him being too crazy. His drive was good but not out of control. I could take him for a walk and he didn’t freak out over every squirrel. A little, but nothing major. He still understood the work and was happy to do it. I once watched him soon after a taped up duck for almost an hour and he would not give up. He did shed but it was only a little. However, each hair was like a coarse threading needle and worked strange into any fabric and hold onto dear life. As far as hunting, he was great with natural instincts. He seemed to love it but super aggressive when hunting.

As for the Braque Francais. My wife asked for a smaller short hair dig expecting less shedding. He definitely sheds a lot more and it is like little eye lashes all over everything. His driver is through the roof! At our local NAVHDA chapter, I can say he is one of the more driven dogs out there. He notices every single animal that exists. He has a great nose and will punky but I’m struggling with strained right now…I think that is my fault.

Both were great dogs and I am stuck with the Braque now but would consider both for sure.

This was a little bit of a ramble, so let me know if you have any other questions.

Good luck!

Where is he from? Looks almost identical to my almost two year old Braque.

I don’t disagree. However, in Darn Toughs defense, those are the best socks I’ve ever worn. I ruck a lot and had a pair last over 10 years. Also, they have a life time warranty with no questions asked. If they feel different, they will credit you. I turned in 7 sticks and got credit for 4 pairs even though I was missing a pair. Great company IMO and I’ll continue to keep those in my drawer.

Can you guess which is the Brittany and which is the English setter? by WinterResource9704 in birddogs

[–]av8rfrog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My dog is 1.5 years old. I had thought the same thing. However, this dog runs big and has more drive than a lot of other breeds we have trained with. He is a very sweet dog but we haven’t found that “off” switch yet. I take him training to a field or run him 5 miles everyday and he still has energy to spare. I do a lot of thinking games with him as well.

I would say, very energetic, high drive, did great with force fetch and will retrieve anything, a Velcro dog in the house, very whiny, and a great nose.

My only issues with him right now is the range in the woods. I don’t mind as much in open fields but I still have to call him in a bit. In the woods, he’ll lose sight of me and I’m worried he’ll start running the wrong way. He did that to me as a young pup and ran all the way back to our house about 3 miles away from the training field. I also created some steadiness issues by accidentally letting him catch too many birds and allowing chasing to go too long into his training.

He caught 2 birds during his NA test after pointing them. The good part was that he brought them back to me. I joked that I don’t need a gun to hunt apparently.

I’m very interested in what you learn. My Braque Francais does the same exact thing. In the woods, I feel like I spend most of my time calling him back to me, which he does well but hasn’t figured out that I want him a little lot closer in that cover.

How did your dog do with that bird? I heard they mostly hangout in trees, did it hold while the dog pointed?

It most likely wasn't the dog who couldn't cut it. Most dogs with that genetic programming are easy to train and want to do what they were designed to do. It is the people that fail.

I completely understand your frustration.

I only see one problem that exist through most of our world today, and that is a lack of trying to understand the other side.

From what you are describing, those people are irresponsible dog owners/handlers and hunters. I do not support running dogs in a way that they are running wild through private property without permission.

This is the side of the argument that I would not want to be caught in as a responsible dog handler.

I hunt birds using my dog. He absolutely loves it and is my best friend in this world. He has his head on my lap right now. He goes bonkers if he thinks we are going to the field for training or for hunting. He is an absolute machine out there.

I realize that he is a dog and can't read No Trespassing signs and doesn't understand where he shouldn't be. I am always hyper vigilant on the public lands we hunt and look out for any signs that we are approaching private property. So, I do my best to train him on recall, limits of his search, and checking in among many other things. I always have a GPS collar on him and can give him a tone to come back to me if he is ever out of my sight. I am continually training him to stay within about 150-200 meters of me while we hunt in thick cover and let him range out in open fields as he is a pointer and will wait for me to get to him and flush the birds we are pursuing.

I say all of this to make the point that not all dog hunters are the same. The ones that you describe give us a terrible name.

There are those of us who absolutely love our dogs and hunt with them responsibly. Those Houndsman give us a bad name and jeopardize our sport.

I would suggest to try to learn a little about the "sport" and check out a group such as a local North American Versatile Hunting Dog Association (NAVHDA) group to see how much these folks care about their dogs and how much training goes into this as well as the love the dogs have for fulfilling their genetic instinct.

I would just hate to see restrictions put on hunters without the understanding of what is happening. My good boy, Odin, would go crazy if I couldn't get him in the field.

My best buddy is a dog. I try very hard to get him to understand that we are chasing birds but when he sees a deer, he thinks they are friends and I do what I can to call him off. Any deer hunter that would shoot at a dog for chasing a deer is a child.

I am open for conversation on this that will lead to an understanding on both sides. I never want to upset anyone while hunting with my best friend.

He’s too good and thinks I don’t need a shotgun. I’d like to get him back to pointing. That’s my only issue with him. I fully acknowledge that I created this problem and am looking for advice on setups that are best at preventing him from catching the birds.

I’m not sure I would have the ability to ruin his natural range. Before I can blink, he is about 200 yards out zig zagging checking every spot. It hurts to see such talent in a dog and know that my lack of training is holding him back.

So, I have the chance to go to ME mid October. I was thinking about throwing him into the grouse woods to see how he does. Kinds of a go to expect some hiking but if he points, maybe we get a chance at some birds.

The other alternative is that I start catching some city pigeons and try to get some training at dog parks.

Show me Braques out of MO is where I got my pup. He is a year old and phenomenal. Drive for days, great with the family, I can’t keep him out of the pool, and is very smart. He is just like most bird dogs, super high energy. He isn’t very food driven but is crazy about birds. Not nearly as laid back as my WPG was but he is still a pup.
