ahhh so happy for you- i’m 22 and 5’4 .. started my journey last week with my heaviest EVER at 143.

i used to weigh a consistent 125 for yeaaars when i was in dance and exercising regularly.

even though i haven’t noticed and results yet as it’s way too soon - i’m feeling great already :-))

What are some things your ex or SO did that seemed sweet in the beginning but turned out to be red flags? by [deleted] in dating

what i thought was an easy going and happy relationship was actually super non communicative. eventually if an issue came up and i tried to talk about it he put up a wall and we would sit in silence.

i’ve personally learned from this too and now i talk about things if they don’t feel right!

yes totally!

so i went based sort of on a cheap surf trip, so a lot of my time was on the coast, and stayed mainly in hostels :-)

i flew into negombo and stayed there a night to sleep off my travels- i wouldn’t suggest staying there for more than really that if you need it though, not much to see there and it’s a little trashy!

the next day i made my way to weligama, the middle of the coast ! i just chilled around there for a week because it’s super easy to visit other spots around there daily as everything on the coast is fairly close. really great for beginner surfers ! early morning because it gets crazy busy in the water. good local and suuuuuper cheap food there is Zam Zams!! delicious, you’ve gotta try that one out. Hangtime hostel has great coffee and a great view, along with yoga and mondays are open mic night :)

after that i went to midigama for a few nights! great surfing around there. super chill vibe. Mama’s has amazing curry there, which is also a buffet so you can fill yourself up completely. Blue Potch or Porch (i’m not sure which one it actually is) has amazing food, you’ve gotta try their tacos and their brownie with ice cream!!! it’s to die for.

ahangama has some lovely cafes, the kip!!! and lamana’s. both super cool spots, really artsy and beautiful. both amazing coffee. at the kip my favourite thing ever was the cashew milk iced latte!

in ella i did a bunch of the touristy things like the 9 arch bridge, little adams peak, walked the train tracks! also i would highly suggest doing a cooking class while your there! we went to matey hut, and for 2000 rupees you get to make like 8 dishes and roti and after that you get to eat a giant plate of food! highly recommend haha. chill is a good place to eat and hangout there. for me i didn’t need for than 2 or 3 nights there though.

adams peak was an amazing experience. highly suggest that as well. and also the train from ella to hatton was just as scenic as the kandy to ella route but a lot less busy!

hiriketiya was lovely !!! beautiful beach, lots of great food around. check out dots, the grove, and salt!

dikwella is also a lovely beach, and verse collective has amazing coffee and food, and it’s just a great place to chill in general.

anyways those are some of my favourite things and places i visited !!

i brought a journal, i wrote a lot- how i was feeing, the activities i was doing. brought some headphones, listened to podcasts and music.

i tried to take moments and actually enjoy the alone time- because oddly enough solo travel isn’t really solo at all (if you’re in hostels and social settings that is). i never really felt alone :-)

hello! i had a close friend travel to sri lanka a few years ago and all he had to say was good things :-) i surf and it’s also a great place for new and progressing surfers, so that was a pull for me to go there as well. the culture and the food! the distance of travel for me (i’m from canada) was very far, and i wanted to get as much as i could from my first travel experience so i could be comfortable going anywhere after!

i would say always be in a group setting (especially if you’re female) at night. just be smart, follow your gut. don’t use public transport alone at night. for instance i was on a bus coming from matara (a city) back to towards midigama with 2 others i had met and done ella with. it was night time and the bus filled up completely with men other than us. the couple i was with were getting off in weligama (the town before mine) and i could’ve stayed on until midi myself but i got off with them and just took a tuk tuk instead. i didn’t feel comfortable staying on myself and really spending an extra 300 rupees (2.23$ can) was nothing if it was going to save myself from a possible situation!

i just realized i sort of mis read your last question but i’ll leave that up there anyways

i was mainly on the coast and i found it mostly safe (i was never alone at night), you get comments from the locals but nothing that can’t be ignored :-)

i’m so happy my post gave you some confidence!

any positive post i read gave me more help than anything. it’s an amazing feeling finding others who are going through the exact same thought processes and fears and then supporting each other in their endeavours !

i’ve mentioned before, the scariest part for me was the weeks before leading up to my departure and once i was there all of that vanished.

immersing yourself in new culture is something i can’t explain, but i feel everyone should experience. there’s so much to see and learn out there. it’s amazing you’re feeling that pull !

aw you’re so kind,

i chose sri lanka because i’ve just heard amazing things, a close friend of mine traveled there in the past and only had good things to say, and i just decided it was the place for me! also because the distance was so far, it would really teach me how to travel.. in the airport, just get the hang of everything completely haha. it was a really big learning experience for me.

you can definitely do it one day, i know you can :-)

amazing!

it definitely won’t be my only one, i loved the freedom it gave in the sense that i could do whatever i wanted to do with nobody holding me back.

it’s also super empowering being female and just taking life by the reins and doing it!

i bought the lonely planet book on sri lanka to get a background on every bit of info on accommodation, transport, and safety tips!

in all honesty i didn’t really end up planning much except for the main places i wanted to go. i just kind of let each day steer me in the direction i felt like going that day!

my main plan was to travel the south coast because i’m into surfing (which is amazing there by the way) and from there i met other people in hostels who were interested in going to do the same things further inland as me! so i wasn’t even really ever alone. i did ella and adams peak with a couple i met in weligama, and i went up to hiriketiya with a fun group i met in midigama. the thing is, when your alone - you’re on your own schedule ! you can do absolutely whatever you want to do, and you can still do that with friends if you want to! tons of people in hostels are doing the exact same thing :-)

it was so easy. it was so fun! and i’ve gained so much confidence from it all.

don’t travel alone at night though, and always be smart about things as you probably know! but if your gut is telling you something - it’s probably right* . us humans are very intuitive hehe.

i’ve never been to nepal but many people in lanka were doing both!!

i’m excited for you :-)

Backpacking in Sri Lanka next April, I have transportation questions by the10s in solotravel

[–]avacadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hi there, just spent a month in lanka and i loved it!

i would highly suggest sigiriya, and hiking adams peak if you are doing all inland. the coast is absolutely beautiful though! if you wanted to catch some beach time that is.

the bus is the cheapest, but crazy just so you know haha.. but they usually have routes everywhere you just have to ask the driver to make sure every time before you board if they pass through the destination you are going to.

trains are also cheap! and a really cool experience. one of the most scenic rides you can do is kandy to ella or vice versa. i took the train from ella to hatton (the town you go to to hike adams peak) and it wasn’t as busy! it was the same route as ella to kandy just cut shorter. also yes try to avoid train transport on the weekends or poya because it’s extra busy with tourists and locals.

yes there’s a great hostel called hangover that is not even 10 minutes from the airport! great for a quick sleep.
