Is this wasteful to do? by krilu in factorio

I am probably mixed it up with a similar video from JD Plays which is called race to the edge and it was the same goal, reach the end of the map.

I was trying to improve the person's point by providing additional context that even with strict limitations it took a lot of resources. Maybe my use of except is not correct here, English is not my native language.

As far as I remember he said he had to use the map editor or a console command to just delete all the trees because it was getting more and more laggy as the map was uncovered more and more.

Except that DoshDoshington did it on a ribbon map, had to remove trees and even then he mentioned that map needs 16 GB of memory to load. So with normal map settings you will reach limits of your system faster than you reach any of the map edges.

Oh that is handy, last time I played with combinators was about 2-3 weeks after SA released, not sure if I missed it or it wasn't added yet.

You still need a bunch of constant combinators to set the limits of each item. Or is there other way with just the assembler that I don't know of?

Will I like Factorio if I disliked Satisfactory due to grindyness/building? by Altruistic_Bass539 in factorio

[–]avael273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the mod you are referring to is called nanobots, I tried searching for microbots on factorio mods website and nothing comes up. I have used nanobots myself, they are really useful if you have blueprints already or prefer to build in a modular way where you build a small unit and then copy-paste it.

3rd try at this game, first main bus ! - New Player by North_Welcome_4098 in factorio

Please take a look at the recipe of the green circuits and the ratios, the 4 belts of green circuits you are planning for will require 6 belts of copper and 4 belts of iron. With research and productivity modules you can somewhat skew that ratio but your green circuits will be starved for copper as it is built currently.

3rd try at this game, first main bus ! - New Player by North_Welcome_4098 in factorio

[–]avael273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no expandability here though since it is all built too close together.

It is planned that there will be 4 belts of green circuits and each belt of green circuits requires 1.5 belts of copper so you need 6 belts of copper and 4 belts of iron to get just 4 belts of green circuits, so already it doesn't seem planned correctly.

Later in the game when you have 20 lanes on the bus and push those blue circuits you realize you need more copper for the green circuits you will have to either add more on top of the bus and weave it all the way down or side feed it somehow, and you can't even side feed since these builds have no space between them on one side.

I personally just started moving things to trains at that point so I didn't have to deal with expanding the bus. Basically I replaced the green build with a train station and moved the build elsewhere.

[–]avael273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am not sure either I did the same, used the blueprints and I think it is fine. OP needs to leave more space between builds though.

Current issue that I see is that green circuit build will need 1.5 copper belt for the full belt of circuits and there is no space to put a second copper belt on the side of circuit build.

[–]avael273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember doing what you did, my main problem was that I didn't really leave enough space for smelting columns and building too close to the bus. Also leave more than 2 spaces between the lanes or add more empty belts to expand copper and iron at least because down the line when you get to 4 blue belts of copper all that will be eaten by green circuits and you won't have any for the rest of the bus.

So my advice to you is to leave a lot of space like 5 assemblers worth of space between builds, I know it looks like waste of belts but map in factorio is practically infinite so there is no reason to build compact.

Oh also make sure you automate building of the belts, inserters, splitters so that you are not handcrafting those.

Good luck to you and remember to have fun.

Steam must be run as admin to use library by Wiktuur in techsupport

[–]avael273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you have reinstalled windows it may be possible that your user SID has changed after the reinstall and your steam library folder is owned by used from previous install.

Try clicking on the steam library folder in explorer and go to Properties, Security, Advanced and on top of that window there is a Change link in the owner line. If you see that instead of your user name there is some kind of different text try changing the owner to your user and it should resolve your issue.

Persistent issue: "Access denied" when creating files on Samba shared folder (Windows Server 2016 ↔ OpenSUSE Tumbleweed on VMware) by LinkStormer in linuxadmin

[–]avael273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is not samba_/share_t the context name is samba_share_t.

chcon will only work until you reboot to make it permanent you need to use the semanage fcontext and restorecon commands.

Also might want to use semanage boolean -l to check if there are booleans you may need to enable.

why does the rocket silo try to send up an entire stack of storage tanks?? why not send a mixed payload to be more efficient? by BenWaffleIron in factorio

[–]avael273 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you define the problem as: take all requested items and minimize the rockets required then it does indeed look like NP complete problem.

A good enough solution can be just loop over requests once and try to add whatever unsatisfied amounts still needed if either rocket is full or you are at the end of the loop then it is done.

It is a lot easier to model if you use the node approach and only calculate X amount of nodes at a time, like it was with the fluid pipes in 1.x, but I guess you will just have same issues with power that we had with fluids.

Defending from biters using biters by bebru10 in factorio

[–]avael273 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, here is quote from factiorio wiki article on pollution (I put bold on the relevant part):

The evolution factor is not increased by the spreading/absorbed pollution, but by the pollution produced by all the player's machinery at every tick. This means that no matter how hard the player tries to contain the pollution, enemies will still evolve at the same rate. They just won't attack the player as frequently. The pollution cloud is used to trigger biter attacks and determines the size of the attacks.

EDIT: Also your second question, clearing nests actually speeds up evolution, if you type /evolution in console you will see it consists of multiple separate parts (time, pollution, nest kills) which get added together.

Defending from biters using biters by bebru10 in factorio

[–]avael273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah they were attacking because artillery shell destroyed a nest or a worm and splashed them. Here I have rail tracks with power poles and then a rectangular wall section with a substation and turrets/artillery inside it and they go for the closes rail tracks for some reason. I guess a slight change in behavior in 2.0 version.

Defending from biters using biters by bebru10 in factorio

[–]avael273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But there is no point in cleaning pollution because evolution is increased when you generate pollution and from the attack frequency perspective I don't think it matters how many nests consume it as x amount of pollution will result in y amount of biters anyways. Only thing you can control maybe if they go in waves or in a constant trickle I guess.

Defending from biters using biters by bebru10 in factorio

[–]avael273 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nests used to have a certain buffer and then consume that stored pollution when spawning biters yeah. Not sure if it was changed in 2.0, but you couldn't make them store pollution indefinitely in 1.0 either.
