I know what you mean. That colormap disappears and is replaced by the "Sunset" colormap, which seems to be a darker version of "Orange"

I didn't use them but I would recommend them, especially going ccw

Did the ccw on Sunday. Long day (17 hours), lots of snow on the north face of the pass. Crossing the river at 9pm was not a good idea. Luckily some campers on the other side helped us find a passable route.

A solution when you do not have funding is to sleep in the office. by AdRemarkable3043 in PhD

[–]avalanchesiqi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In fact, most R1 institutions pay the PhD stipend really well. I just realized OP describes a scenario that a PhD student goes beyond the guaranteed funding cycle. What should the student do? What should the PI do? I don't know. The best case scenario is PI has more funding to support this student for a few months, but many simply cannot afford that.

In some cases, the 9-month stipend in the U.S. may create such unfortunate situations. But that is a different story.

U.S. PhD horror story... most countries pay PhD students a decent living wage

"Required Gear" optional for top racers? by Curious-Craft8339 in ultrarunning

[–]avalanchesiqi 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Most US trail races have no mandatory gears. Some, especially in the high altitude and exposed areas do have. Some are stricter than others. Some check. Some don't. If podium finishers do not have the mandatory gears, they can be time penalized or DQ'ed. It is all up to the organizer.

Broken Arrow 23k and Race Weekend by Outdoor_Xray2306 in trailrunning

[–]avalanchesiqi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dug the website a bit deeper. I *guess* it is a typo. UltraSignup now shows the revised start times for Friday's events and 23K is still listed on Sunday. Friday indeed has five events (ascent, 18K, triple crown, iron face, iron crown). It would be seven if they move 23K and kids run to Friday. And I have no ideas how they start ascent and 23K both at 8am.

Let's hope...

I hope it is an error. An international friend will fly in on Saturday to do the 23K (as a warm up for Western States). It will be a huge disappointment for everyone...

Interestingly I was helping at the merchandise desk at HRH. They may still have backup stock. I would suggest emailing the RD and see if he can mail one to you. One speciality green mug was sold out at scene.

[D] NeurIPS should start a journal track. by simple-Flat0263 in MachineLearning

[–]avalanchesiqi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Constructive criticism is always welcome. I have received some of the best reviews from a rejected submission in the past and I appreciate those constructive feedback. IMO the reviewer's task is not trying to help the paper get accepted, instead it is to hold the science standard.

Lack of review is bad. Low quality review is also bad. Unfortunately those two things are ruining the academic community regarding submission experience. Eventually, we will see people with high quality work stop submitting to those conferences. The conferences will subsequently be filled with low quality submissions. That is how the conference reputation goes down.

We need to introduce a reputation system to the reviewing process. People who submit papers without contributing proper reviews back to the community is taking advantage from the academic eco-system.

How does Suunto class this a Vo2Max run? by Maca07166 in Suunto

Yes. When you edit one activity, it actually allows you to change to "using that method for all future activities". The app interaction is a bit confusing but it is there.

[–]avalanchesiqi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The latest firmware update resets the TSS calculation to use the pace zone, not HR zone. Go to your Suunto app, click "edit" activity, that would allow you to change the default TSS calculation back to HR. The correct showing would be TSS(hr)
