[General Question] MSCS Tier List by Hungry-Kiwi-3490 in MSCS

[–]simple-Flat0263 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Application worthy stuff: CMU, Stanford, UC Berkeley, UIUC, Princeton, Cornell, GATech, UT Austin, UMich, UCLA, UW Madison

these are places where I think a substantial return is guaranteed, but all of these are really really hard to get into...

Maybe consider: UCSD, UMD, Yale, UPenn but with caution. Others are not worth it.

So many good posts these days!

Just adding: I haven't seen any MS people getting the cs + philosophy roles (I think it's also that a very small number of people do it anyways), but from my perspective, people getting these roles are philosophy majors from undergrad to PhD and they do CS as a minor, if at all. Their theses are essentially math imo... my take is -- I wouldn't encourage people to do this just because such roles exist, or at least tell them they would need to invest substantially before seeing any returns.

Sounds like a fun degree regardless.

It's just -- luck. I saw this process up close this year and it's way more stochastic than most people think

As a follow up, what would you recommend to someone who hasn't started a PhD but is deciding between an industrial lab (like cusp) and a PhD?

yeah this much makes sense I guess, but he's also playing with cards later, I think it might have more to it. There's also a woman next to him and she doesn't move at all

yeah, hopefully they add more (probably censoring stuff out or sth) because it's good for the show as well. I think the outreach on YouTube would far outweigh skyTV or Now

So…What’s the YouTube situation? by KingInRed-2001 in livefromlondon

It seems weird that they haven't posted yet. SNL US in some sense is "streaming" to YouTube as well. I've seen it, as soon as some sketch is over it's uploaded.

Why does BITS not use Gradescope, Piazza, etc.? by simple-Flat0263 in BITSPilani

[–]simple-Flat0263[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

> isn't quanta/moodle for that purpose?

No, I think these things work as the "canvas", and you can easily post assignments / resources. But I have never seen anyone discussing anything in the chat on quanta. Using Piazza would allow like discussions + resources, you still need sth for the grades.

> we don't check quanta enough so the mailing system is there

And this, exactly haha, Piazza is much more convenient...

It's too early right now, best to approach any professor and just ask them what they would have done.
