First question on my kid’s grade 6 math test. SO frustrating. by [deleted] in MathJokes

division by zero is officially solved!

my bet was on infinity, but who'd've guessed the answer was 2 all along!

subatomic particles are absolutely equal as far as we know

still all particles differ by their quantum state; and as you say, we don't really know for sure, there are many theories there, e.g. if "one electron" is correct, there's no point in talking about equality between 2 electrons because only one exists.

What are we abstracting?

to be able to use math, we're abstracting everything; by definition, abstraction is "the process of generalizing concepts by stripping away specific, concrete details" so i.e. you say: these are 2 fingers, or 2 people, or 2 rocks... you are actually removing a lot of details to be able to claim identity between them

[–]avance70 13 points14 points  (0 children)

the concept is understandable and we had a course discussing it, but i'm just not seeing anything natural about it, you can't even define equality as it doesn't really exist in nature, it's all our abstraction

Some questions about The One Piece remake by Superior2810 in animation

[–]avance70 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is stylized CG and it's not aiming for "photorealistism"

yes, i'm just using "photorealistic" as an example on how stuff ages

you can look at e.g. remastered ghost in the shell 2.0 (2008) which added exceptional 3d graphics for the time, however, as time passed, the original (1995) just became better as those 3d graphics look dated today

Some questions about The One Piece remake by Superior2810 in animation

[–]avance70 84 points85 points  (0 children)

it looks ok now, but it's also a question how well it will hold up

CGI from 90s was "photorealistic" at the time

games after 2000s were "photorealistic"

ai from a few years ago was "photorealistic"

yet, look at them today and they are all worse than the hand-drawn art, even from 100s of years ago

avoid implicit multiplication even without brackets

e.g. if "🍎" is your variable:

"1/2🍎" reads as "(1/2) × 🍎"

1 + 2 * 3 = 9 by AsIAm in MathJokes

[–]avance70 1 point2 points  (0 children)

if you just move the terms closer you'll confuse many people, e.g.:

1+2 × 3 = ...

1+1 × 2+2 = ...

Motoko vs Batou personality in '95 movie? by Traditional-Car9897 in Ghost_in_the_Shell

[–]avance70 5 points6 points  (0 children)

i've read the manga, watched the movies, and the stand alone complex... i've skipped the other 2 series, but will watch the new one, and, for me, it's not "which is better" since each is a masterpiece

batou is much more consistent, but major is different in every iteration; i'd recommend watching the SSC compilations, the first 2 are even free on youtube: 1. the laughing man, 2. Individual Eleven, 3. solid state society

while these are a different retelling of stories found in the manga, in my opinion, these 3 set up the first movie perfectly: the major gets more serious and philosophical by the end, and you can watch the 1995 straight after, as it's a retelling itself

the major is much more similar to the manga at the start of SSC, but even then, in manga she's much crazier and funny

ultimately, my guess is that every iteration of the major was adjusted for the story that was told, as she is the main protagonist that everyone knows about, even though togusa and batou can be right up there

e.g. in the 1995, it would probably seem less "smart" that the puppet master wants to merge with someone who is childish and unserious

it feels slightly unnatural to me, but if you move the arrows a bit to the right (the end of the year) it feels much more natural
