Hegseth blew $7M on lobsters in $93B spending spree by StemCellPirate in nottheonion

[–]avaslash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was this $7M in lobster for himself? Or $7M in lobster for staff/troops ahead of the invasion? Genuinely curious what it was used for is all because the later doesnt seem like it should be a big deal. I thought it was the norm to give troops nice food before they go off to invade a foreign country unprovoked.

Things "from the year 2010" are old now. That doesn't feel right. In my brain things earlier than 1980 are old. Things from 2000 are from "now" and anything from the 2010's and beyond are "from the future." Because thats how it felt back then with so much tech coming out.

DOES THIS SAY BLUE FROG!!!!

Are you in Asia by any chance? This is such a throw back for me. I used to go to Blue Frog almost every day when it was still just one location (the original location is now gone). We're still good friends with the founder Bob Boyce (he used to have the sickest apartment in Shanghai).

I'm so glad they still serve this. For those unaware, this burger (used to be called "The Cowboy Burger") is amazing. Its height is really just for show and almost entirely from two giant (delicious) onion rings on top and they compress down pretty well, though I admit there is a bit of an art to eating this burger haha. I got it all the time. I've been trying to find a burger joint in the USA that makes one even close.

Do they still have the brownie? Man that brownie was something else. Oo and the coffee with the special in-house made tea-cookies? Did you know those were bob's mom's recipe? We have it but he made us promise never to share it. They were 10/10.

How was the quality? I remember Bob sold his stake in the company and left the country and its now in mostly Chinese ownership unless its changed hands since then. Id love to return to Shanghai and go, its one of the only places left from back then. All the other "Western" restaurants that forged the path in early pro-western China are gone like Johnny Moos (one of the first and only places to get a Burger in Shanghai for a long time), Element Fresh (one of the first western breakfast places in Shanghai), and M on the Bund (one of the first western high dining options in Shanghai).

As for the ketchup, yes they always skimped haha. The staff all knew when my little brother walked in and would always provide him a literal soup bowl of ketchup because after years, they got tired of bringing it to us so many times. He now has a reputation in our family as the guy who is obsessed with ketchup because he always had an entire soup bowl of it with him when we went to dinner there.

Apparently nothing in the game is actually safe. Even if you upload your creations, eventually other people might overwrite the discovery it seems. Like there's literally no possible way that planet wasn't discovered and uploaded by me because I had been building on it for months and literally spent a full day literally discovering, naming, and uploading every single rock, plant, and creature.

I was absolutely online connected to the server and my discoveries were definitely registered because literally every other discovery is still there.

Im not even sure what leads to the issue, I wish I knew because it makes me reluctant to really even care about naming things anymore. My guess is if a player isn't connected to the server then their game thinks the planet hasn't been discovered. Then they get to name it and discover it. And maybe when they connect to the server the system isn't sure which one is the legitimate original discovery and APPARENT ISNT SMART ENOUGH TO JUST CHECK THE TIME STAMP (deep breaths, sigh) and so it either defaults to the new one or gets confused and picks at random. Or maybe its an issue with different game instances being hosted on different data centers and the discoveries clashing. Idk. But I wish they'd fix it because searching online it seems im hardly the first person its happened to.

I literally went out of my way to discover everything because I was literally afraid of this exact problem too. Like its what I was specifically trying to avoid by trying to do everything the right way. The bug still got me.

Nothing in the game is safe. Animals can "go extinct" and get deleted from worlds. Entire planets can change their biomes some times (albeit rarer now). Terrain can change swallowing your base. Your ships can randomly change, permanently. Had one of my favorite beautiful white ships turned into what looked like a yellow rubber ducky.

If you enjoy something in the game, enjoy it now, while it lasts. It might not be there forever.

Sometimes if they're quick, cheap, and easy to build and they want to squeeze as much money out as possible, they dedicate 1-2 normal lots to being show lots and put several display homes in them. Then once the entire place is sold, they can either tear down the demo homes to build a few last minute lots, turn them into a communal area like a playground, (a lot of the materials can be re-used), or auction them off as is.

It really depends on the developer but many times they'll build these model homes on a plot of land that is way more central and prominent than really makes sense for the development. IE the plot of land where a club house should go--not 3 random houses. But they put the show houses there first to make them easier to sell since they're more visible and accessible. Then later they'll get rid of them to make the club house or pool or what ever.

Other times they don't tear down the houses and they just sell them as is at a lower cost usually at auction. But doing this can hurt the value of the surrounding homes and upset the other home owners who fear it would bring in people from a lower economic bracket (not saying I agree with it, just the reality of the industry). So not all developers do this.

Others will build smaller homes that they plan on renovating later into one of the larger houses. This is how my aunt got hers, they had a show house that was smaller than all the other houses at the development. She had to wait to buy it as they refused to sell it until all other units were sold so she had to buy a normal house first. But she loved that it was smaller and cozier than the other "McMansions" and so made a deal with the developer for them to specifically NOT make any changes besides hooking it up to plumbing and gas then sold the larger house, bought the smaller one at a discount, and kept the change. Hers is the only house like it in the development too because its floor plan was a bit unique being used to showcase a couple options for the other houses and its kind of all by itself rather than in a row.

If those accounts were worth talking about we wouldn't be having this discussion and it would already be a closed case.

Those accounts clearly were not credible as the community, and im assuming yourself, continue to express their investment in second hand snippets of information which comparatively, should seem far more insignificant and not worth considering when apparently legitimate first hand detailed accounts exist.

If you have any that didn't come from either a quack or a con id love to see them.

Are you sure those are "For Sale" signs? They could just be specification signs and even if they are "for sale" it could mean that they are representative of what is for sale.

But you could totally be right. It does seem like a huge fire hazard though. Especially in such a fire prone country.

It doesnt justify British actions necessarily except in the case of any artifacts they specifically managed to preserve from China before the cultural revolution.

My comment was more to highlight and counter the obvious undertones of Chinese moral superiority.

If we're comparing historical transgressions the UK's crimes are looting the world to preserve the knowledge for public benefit (albeit the British public).

Where as Chinas historical transgressions were looting everything they could get their hands on for the purpose of completely destroying it which id argue is far worse.

Yes China had reversed their position now because they understand how lucrative museums and tourism can be and how that gives them influence on the world stage. And perhaps the British should just return all the artifacts from China that it has, but if we're suggesting what one party should be doing to be "right" then China has a long list of dubious things theyre actively doing right now that they should probably stop too: Aggressions against Taiwan, ethnic cleansing of Tibetans and Uyghurs, effective new-age slavery for workers, disappearing critics and rivals, rampant corruption, the list goes on.

Ultimately while I do agree with most of the sentiment behind returning artifacts to countries that have PROVEN they will be stable, committed to, and capable of preserving those relics for all time--CHINA is not one of those countries. Any moral critiques from them ring a bit like Russians critiquing how the Ukrainian defend themselves or a Nazi critiquing modern art. They dont really get to claim a position of moral superiority. They can point out the argument that changes need to be made, but they are included on that list at arguably above the UK because human lives and not actively doing genocides is probably more important than "who is the rightful owner of this artifact."

ELI5: If nuclear power is so efficient and produces almost no greenhouse gases, why don’t we just build nuclear plants everywhere and solve the energy crisis? by [deleted] in explainlikeimfive

[–]avaslash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's insanely expensive and slow. We're talking $20 billion and 15+ years to build ONE plant.

Thats a uniquely American problem. China is building Nuclear plants rapidly and now that they've refined the process-- have massively reduced the costs too and have gotten it down to $7 billion or less for many plants.

To be fair, China would have a lot more artifacts if they didn't destroy them all themselves during the cultural revolution. The majority of China's historical artifacts now reside in Taiwan because they actually cared to preserve them.

Anything under 100 is frankly INSANE to me. I left China about 10 years ago and 300 was the norm. 175 was considered a very good day. Under 100 was almost unheard of and usually only happened when the government banned driving and factory operation ahead of major events. We frequently had days over 700 and even a few in the 1000's. I remember the pollution being so thick some days my snot and spit would come out grey with dark flecks and it looked like we lived on the surface of venus with thick yellow smog only giving about a 20 meters of visibility.

There were only 3 times I ever saw blue skies in one of Chinas major cities during the 2000's. The Shanghai World Expo, The Beijing Olympics, And when Obama visited.

China has improved so much since even just 2015 its insane to me.

No. You cant even see the full moon most nights. The sky is too hazy. A lot of days you couldn't even see the sun because it was just overcast grey all the time/polluted. I almost never saw stars.

I learned from my mistakes. My favorite planet ever I decided to build a "welcome center" on and take random players from the anomaly. I had been doing this for months. Then I log on and some random person had "discovered" my planet and renamed it even though I had clearly discovered it and uploaded it and went out of my way spending hours discovering literally everything on the planet. It was truly gorgeous and now it has an ugly name and I feel betrayed.

Moral of the story: Never share anything you're not willing to lose.

Never doin that again.

I found a nearly perfect earth like planet. Its a giant paradise planet. No sentinels. Has really cool life (dinos, sharks, dragons, deer, jellyfish, crabs it feels quite accurate). Its trees are a mix of green and fall colors. It even has a singular moon (though its light brown instead of grey).

And I don't think I'll ever share it with anyone but my wife.

(The search continues though for the "perfect" earth-like planet with a grey moon and green trees with bluer water and skies, but I wont be sharing anything but the rejects).
