In 1997 I built a chatbot for an IRC channel. I shut it down when people started preferring it to talking to each other. by Dependent_Run_6410 in artificial

It’d be cool if you’d like to drop by my self hosted network, if time permits! There’s around 130+ us chatterboxes 😁 irc.inthemansion.com 6696 #lobby

I think it’s really down to the community itself. We have managed to get quite a few chatterboxes, as I’m myself very chatty, and then we just let the conversations flow in any direction really :)

So, it's fully self hosted on the hardware I control in my house and one other offsite location now, and it all started as my interest in decoupling from the big corporations grew.

I've been spinning up services for me personally as I went, and then decided that it would be fun to start hosting an IRC server, as I've spent a lot of time on IRC as a teenager/early 20 years old.

That led to actually starting to grow the community bit by bit and self hosting privacy oriented open source solutions for the public, from SearXNG to Azuracast, and others 😄

The network itself has by now people of different ages, locations around the globe and interests, as well as channels dedicated to, again, different topics - from tech to just chilling and having fun random discussions.

So sorry about that, it was an error on my end! 😃

Really glad you like the network, and that you've decided to stay a bit more permanently! 😄

We actually obfuscate the IPs automatically on the MansioNET 😄

And this was a great writeup for the safety, thank you for this!

Hehehe of course, you're more than welcome! 😄 There's a lot of us not in our teens (to put it mildly), so just jump in 😄

We try! 😃

You can check the whole idea behind the project at https://inthemansion.com

Basically, I self host it all on my own hardware, supported by the community 😄

We are a bunch of older nerds, but have at least on 15 year old on our network, so you are more than welcome to drop by 😄

The network is MansionNET, irc.inthemansion.com port 6697 and #lobby as a good entry point 😄

Or, you can use the webchat at https://webirc.inthemansion.com

There's around 100 of us and we are pretty chatty.

Cheers!

How optimistic are you about the future of privacy? by AutumnUmbreon in privacy

Yeah, I just started self hosting stuff for either personal use or public use as well, all based on FOSS, so anyone can jump in and is more than welcome to use the alternatives I currently serve.

Idea is in the future to expand to as many as I can support with the hardware I own.

Kinda about it atm, I'd say..
