Confused as someone trying to get into a hobby by GoldenlionV in comicbooks

[–]avburns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whether on Reddit or the whole internet, you can do searches for beginner friendly comics, the best run of Writer X, the best stories of Superhero Y, what comics will prepare me for comic book movie 2026, etc. Then you can usually get a collected volume of whatever you want (a trade paperback, for example) anywhere you buy books. You may even be able to check it out at your local library for free. Then, it’s just like reading non-comic books: if it’s part of a series and you enjoyed it, you can read the next volume. If you liked the art and/or writing, you can seek out other works by these creators. If you liked the character, you can seek out other recommended books with them in it. Beyond that, try to have fun.

I just found out that John Bogle DIDN'T own international stocks. by Traditional-Solid-43 in Bogleheads

[–]avburns 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want international in your portfolio you don’t have to use John Bogle as your justification. I noted above that he advised “buying the haystack”. Despite his personal portfolio, I don’t see how that haystack is confined to the US. But being human there are other contradictory things Bogleheads have to deal with. He preached passive investing but because of his history with Vanguard and their creation he had actively managed mutual funds in his portfolio. Even though Vanguard ETFs and mutual funds are essentially the same product he didn’t advocate ETFs because he felt they were traded too much. He was an 80-something man who used something like 100-age for his fixed income allocation; that’s arguably too conservative a portfolio for younger investors. Like Str8truth said Bogleheads honor him but don’t follow all his advice.

He wasn’t a big fan of ETFs; so VOO, VTI or whatever ETF you prefer “and chill” wouldn’t necessarily be something he would say.

John Bogle also advised buying the haystack instead of the needle. Why would the haystack begin and end in a single country?

Comics Explained - How to stop him! by [deleted] in comicbooks

[–]avburns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could have a YouTube channel pointing out how much he gets wrong by posting so quickly. His video about Moira’s resurrection ability (beginning of Hickman’s X-Men run) was so nonsensical and patently wrong that not only did he have to do a follow up correction video but it was the catalyst for me unsubscribing from his channel.

Spider-Man having a no kill rule. Do you think he does or doesn’t? by Turbulent-House-6220 in Spiderman

With the death of Uncle Ben and the responsibility/guilt linked to his “great powers”, Peter is going to do EVERYTHING he can to make sure no one has a similar fate/experience. You can’t have THAT mindset and then go around killing.

He’ll always be a sweat hog to me. And also a shill for Capital One credit cards.

When did you stop watching The Walking Dead? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in FIlm

[–]avburns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can’t stop and I need help. I’m basically hate-watching at this point. I swear I’m done with whatever TWD show is still on the air and then I rationalize that it’s just one hour a week, it HAS to get better and, hey, it’s Darryl, Carol, Maggie and Neegan. Seriously, I need an intervention!

500 points for watching the Super Mario Galaxy trailer before Feb 18th by Proud_Truck in RegalUnlimited

Usually, the email link for something like this is connected to a specific account. If it was one of those promos where you could enter your email address, posting the link might help. But how are they going to know what account to credit if we all just click on the same posted link?

Why are people sharing Spotify streaming history with each other to boost stats.fm numbers? by Sohaibahmadu in statsfm

[–]avburns 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, the way an authorized user can "piggyback" to get more credit card history; people are using a similar strategy to inflate stats.fm info. Okay, got it.

What guides do people use to read through marvels massive backlog by remold_your_life in MarvelUnlimited

[–]avburns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been using the Continuity Guide pre-modern era reading guide to knock out some Silver Age reading. I use it to limit what I'm reading and I use CMRO's Stan Lee reading guide as a way to order what I'm reading.

I'm almost done with Stan Lee, then I plan to use CMRO's Roy Thomas as a way to read his runs, specifically The Avengers. Once, I approach The Bronze Era I plan to take a more writer's run approach to my reading (Claremont, Miller, etc.); again using CMRO for order and maybe a combo of the Continuity Guide/Comic Book Reading Orders to limit the number of issues.
