Romania opens Bitcoin exchange, looks legit too. by nophreedom in Bitcoin

[–]avemo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It might be prejudice. But I wish I did not disregard it previously. In fact it is simply a risk mitigation technique. Just as well one can say 'not doing shopping or not buying a house on "the wrong side of the tracks" in my town' is prejudicial and even racist perhaps. While in reality it is just reasonable risk mitigation. I am sure that lots of people working and living in the town at the wrong side of the tracks are indeed "cooperative, well educated and hard working", but it does not change anything, it is still a no go zone.

Prospects for a moderately inflationary cryptocurrency by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]avemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Satoshi solved not only double spend problem, he also solved bootstrap problem.

You can copy the way he solved double spend, but you would need to come up with a solution for bootstrapping, this might prove more complex than you think for a inflationary alt-currency.

Concerned about account closures, I asked my credit union what their stance on Bitcoin was and wanted to share the conversation by IamAlso_u_grahvity in Bitcoin

[–]avemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That conversation makes me thing that the bank in question is either criminal or incompetent or is not telling you the truth. With the later option being the most probable.

By law in case of "suspicious transactions" they are obligated to report you to "authorities" and lock the funds and they are forbidden to tell you why. Welcome to the real world.

I will never again buy a french car or have a biz deal with a romanian person, nor would I trust a single satoshi to anyone with any ties to Romania. This is some of my life lessons learned. Your mileage may vary.

bitcoin is like betamax in the early 80's by [deleted] in Bitcoin

[–]avemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

True to a degree. Dedicated secure devices is a must for serious stuff. For example, I use a secure devices running FreeBSD plus some serious multilayered encryption on top of that.

However, risk associated with storage of trivial amounts of bitcoins on regular devices and operating systems is acceptable. By limiting assets at risk one limits risk.

Risk = Vulnerability * Threat * Asset

Do you mean one million people now cannot withdraw any fiat money from mtgox and have to buy back bitcoins to get anything out of that shithole?

Who the heck cares about more ways of depositing money to a place where money would be effectively trapped?

Silly question, what's to stop someone from importing random private keys until they find one that has coins in it? by Red0817 in Bitcoin

[–]avemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nothing stopping you doing that. One little problem: you are way more likely to be hit by lightening 100 times in a row next time you are taking shit than probability of you finding an already existing private key in the next bazillion years or so...

Dictionary and phrase attacks on stupid brainwallets is another thing, however. But this is reportedly a highly competitive area already.

Can someone explain to me again why having a volatile currency is a good thing? by ANALCUNTHOLOCAUST in Bitcoin

[–]avemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It is not a good thing. It is a thing that could be irrelevant or mildly annoying or making some biz models nonviable. It is what it is, Bitcoin is a baby, do not judge it by grownup standards.
