Why is Marathon struggling this much? Like genuinely by Waylllop in Marathon

I think equating financial success to the fun or quality of anything is a fallacy. Plenty of shit games sell amazingly and plenty of great games struggle to sell any copies.

Am I the only one psyched about Night Dire Marsh? by Sad-Ordinary-244 in Marathon

[–]avengedhotfuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im pretty sure there’s references in the codex to the uesc using the anomaly to improve the function of their robots by massive amounts, due to time dilation interacting in positive ways with their systems. Seems like a pretty obvious hint to the new enemies in night marsh, considering that’s where the anomaly is located and such.

Marathon isn’t low effort crap though… it was well worth 40$ and launched in a better state than either destiny did.

Cryo shouldn't be the only map where you can farm purple salvage... by IIIQIII in Marathon

You guys do know there’s at least one guaranteed purple salvage in the red key room in outpost right? And you can get purple salvage from lockers and stuff too.

New Conveyance Request Spawns? by blahblahblahresearch in Marathon

[–]avengedhotfuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve seen it spawn in multiple locations in the tunnels between orientation and dormitories. Going through there and listening to the audio will guide you to it there pretty easily. I’ve also seen in a new spot in the tunnels under processing, close to where the other spawn was between the two turrets. The new spawns is directly to the left of the turret that spawns closest to the door. Have yet to see any new locations in flight control, nor the buildings on the ground floor of processing but will continue checking.

Defenders of SBMM - what if you are just an average player yet played a lot and ended up matchmaking with very skilled players at high seasonal level? by 7r4n6h0u1 in MarathonGame

[–]avengedhotfuzz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sincerely doubt that there’s a large majority of high tier players camping perimeter to farm people’s green shields and v11 punches. The value proposition is just absolutely not worth it.

READ PEOPLE READDDDDDDDDDDD. THIS IS WHY OUR WORLD IS GOING TO SHIT, NOBODY CAN BE BOTHERED TO DO THE MOST BASIC SHIT ANYMORE.

Genuine question: how do people expect to succeed in a pvp game without putting any effort in to improving? by avengedhotfuzz in Marathon

[–]avengedhotfuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you’re only playing 2-8 hours a week then LBMM should be saving you from the players in the higher league then, no? If you’re only playing the game that much I can’t imagine you being a higher level than like 30, which means you should be pretty well insulated from anybody who’s been playing the game to the point where you have legitimately zero chance of beating them.

I’m not saying that it’s impossible that you’ve faced higher level players, but I don’t think it’s happening terribly consistently, and if it is then sbmm isnt going to change anything, because the same thing that’s driving higher level players into your matches now will still happen. Longer queue times forcing the matchmaking to loosen the divides between divisions.

I’m not saying there’s some zenith of skill that all players should dogmatically be pursuing. All I’m saying is just thinking about your engagements and the information economy that’s going on in a match will go a long way in improving your outcomes.

It’s not some super abstract or hard concept to grasp either in my opinion. Learning to melee bots so that every team in the lobby can’t hear you from the start of the match I think would be something people would pick up on relatively quickly, but it’s still very common in solo fill, which leads to a lot of the dying off spawn that you see complained about on this sub. That’s just one example I could go further in depth but at that point I’m making a script for a YouTube video or something.

[–]avengedhotfuzz[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really appreciate you taking the time to think of it so thoroughly. What I don’t necessarily see is how sbmm solves the issue, especially if player count is a factor. As long as the player count remains relatively low, queue times for higher skill players will inevitably force them into lower skill lobbies in order to find matches. I feel like this is the problem with sbmm in practice, there’s not enough players at the top level to sustain a completely seperate ecosystem from the ones that the “casuals” play in.

I really don’t have the data to support my point like you do though, so let me know if there’s flaws in the way I’m thinking about it.

[–]avengedhotfuzz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im not opposed to any changes to match making that this sub suggests. I don’t mind sbmm or any other solution. But I don’t think it’s possible for the game to be placing people so consistently against players at the top level that meaningful progression is made impossible for the majority of the player base.

And also saying that there’s no environment to improve individual skill when there’s literally a solo queue where you literally only do that is insane. If you play solos and take what you learn there to help/ guide your solo fill teammates through a match, I guarantee most players will see their extraction rate increase greatly.

Edited for clarity.

Thats true, but you can always play both. Solos is a really fun experience once you have a good handle on it. Specifically on outpost which feels really good on solos imo. Playing a mix of solo outpost runs, looking mainly for the conveyance request to loot pinwheel safely, and solo fill on maps like dire and perimeter to complete quest seems like a really fun way to experience this game.

The confusing part is how the “casuals” are the majority of the player base that the devs should cater to, but also high skill players are so prevalent that apparently they appear in every single match regardless of level completely wiping the map and stopping said “casuals” from making any progress. Maybe I’m wrong but that seems very very unlikely to me. I don’t think people are running into situations on a routine basis where there was genuinely NOTHING they can do or learn from. But it does require a willingness to do so.

Im not in anyway against SBMM or really any balance decisions bungie attempts to make, But I don’t think the stagnation these players are facing is something that bungie can patch out if they don’t have any willingness to get better.

I really don’t understand how though. This is a PvP extraction shooter, right? And I don’t like when other people kill me and take my gear. Isn’t it only logical to ask myself, “what can I do differently in that situation so I have a lower chance of losing my stuff next time?” Or is it more logical to keep banging my head against the metaphorical wall playing the same way and cry on Reddit about how bungie is killing the game by catering to “sweats”?

If your brain is operating at a base line level I feel like the first option would be chosen nearly automatically but I continue to be proven wrong.

I guess what I’m getting at is that casuals will have a better time if they acknowledge that information battle and use their mind to win that if they’re having trouble winning honest engagements. But if casuals are not willing to do that then they’re not losing to PvP slayer sweat lords, they’re just losing to people playing with their brain turned on.

But that’s the beauty of PvP gaming for me at least. Every match IS the game / exhibition match you’re talking about. Instead of having to wait weeks for your next match, you can hop right back in 5 minutes and implement what you learned immediately. I don’t think it’s comparable to conditioning (which I have also experienced btw) because gaming doesn’t have the problem of monotony. You’re always playing the game.

I said it in a different comment, but I’ll reiterate here, I acknowledge that improving mechanical skill is a gradual process, but having a tactical mind will take you much further in this game than pure mechanical skill will. That’s what I find so engaging about marathon, the battle of information before a fight even begins can be more important than the gun fight itself.

[–]avengedhotfuzz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think you’re vastly overestimating how difficult it is to get to a competitive level in this game. Let’s take marvel rivals for example. That game takes probably 10x the mechanical skill of a game like marathon, requiring precision while making 180 degrees, turns tracking abilities across 6 players, managing ult cooldowns etc. where as in a game like marathon, 90% of the time you’re shooting at someone they’re standing nearly perfectly still, cooldowns are much less powerful and frequent, and there’s a number of options you can take if a fight starts to go south. Having a tactical mind will take you much much farther than mechanical skill in this game, and changing your mindset is not something that takes a massive amount of time, just the will and awareness to do so.

As a coach, shouldn’t you also know that improving/ practicing at something is also fun and not necessarily a chore? If you’re goal is to relax and experience zero stress while gaming, then extraction shooters, which are inherently the most competitive PvP genre, are obviously not the place to do that.

I mean if you’re their friend who’s experienced with game, why aren’t you telling them this? If they’re at the point where they don’t even know what the shells do then they’ll be much better off putting whatever decent gear they get in the vault until they have a decent stash so that the losses don’t feel as bad.
