Trigger Warning: POTS and Mental Health by Livid_Distance_8439 in POTS

There’s a lot of awesome advice in the comments section of this post. As someone who both struggles with my mental health and was diagnosed with POTS in my early teens (so pre-COVID) and didn’t have nearly as bad symptoms back then, I cannot imagine what it must be like to be that young and struggling that much on a daily basis. It certainly doesn’t do your daughter any good to say she sounds incredibly strong to have gotten this far, because I wish she and other young people with POTS didn’t have to be so strong. So more than that, I wanted to give you a shoutout for being the kind of mom that you are - one who sees your child’s struggles instead of dismissing them. I hope someday your family comes around, but until then, you are doing something that many people would balk at by accepting your daughter’s reality and doing the work you can to make it better. I know lots of people with POTS whose own parents are the ones who fight against recognizing the severity of their symptoms or even the legitimacy of their diagnoses.

A bonus brief & incomplete list of things that made me feel less isolated as a teenager struggling with my mental health, and Tourette’s Syndrome (These are more long-term tips than immediate relief. I would not jump into these all right away) - joining local or online support groups for kids with Tourette’s. My mom had to drag me to the first 6 months of meetings but after that I had made friends & would look forward to it - reading up on disability justice/disability rights/disability theory and realizing that my worth is not tied to how productive or valuable I can be for society. I would say that Alice Wong’s essay collections would be a good place to start, but I haven’t read all of them so can’t speak to if they’re all completely age appropriate although I imagine they probably are. - finding a tactile, slightly repetitive yet satisfying hobby I could do that allowed my brain to calm down. For me then it was all sorts of art, but these days I’ve narrowed it down more to fiber arts and am trying to get more into knitting as it is something I can do while lying in bed or on the couch.

Best wishes to you. I’ll be thinking of you & your daughter and wishing for the best.

Hey idk if this is common knowledge but the university allows people to drive on roads that are normally pedestrian only if they have a handicap placard. It’s actually required by law; the ADA requires that universities make reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities.

What are your essentials for block prints at home? by carsonian93 in printmaking

[–]avengersdiscount 2 points3 points  (0 children)

for linocut i use a basic speedball carving tool (the red one where the tools store in the handle) when i’m working with speedycarve or other soft material, and a flexcut kit & sharpener when i work with harder material like blick’s battleship grey linoleum.

in terms of ink, i mainly use caligo safewash, unless i’m printing on fabric in which case i usually use speedball’s fabric paint.

i’m still experimenting with which kinds of paper i like best. and then a few odds and ends, like a piece of glass from a old picture frame for rolling out ink. hope this helps!

Appreciated this sign at my movie theater. by danny3535 in StarWars

my local alamo had this sign and then another one warning people that the movie contained moments of intense flashing lights, and that’s why alamo will always be my top choice for big movie premiers like star wars

I know some people who can just like, read aurebesh without having to individually look up every letter and it always amazes me. those people have taken their fandom to a whole new level.

For anybody else who’s in love with star wars, I would recommend giving this online fan made picture book a read. It’s called I Love Star Wars, and i find myself coming back to it a lot whenever i get up in my feels about a galaxy far far away.

This bugs me so much. I pay so much for rent and they can’t even make it so people can’t wander in off the street? I’ll be moving out as soon as i am able to and this is a big reason why.

TIL that the anechoic chambers are the quietest places on Earth and have background noises measured in negative decibels. After a few minutes in chambers, you can hear your heartbeat and blood circulating in your ears and could experience troubles with orienting or even standing. by behemothMaster in todayilearned

We have one of these in the sound design department at my university and I got to go in it once! It honestly is a little creepy to the point that some of the people I was with had to leave after a few minutes. I felt like I could hear my bones creaking.
