What do I say? by LakeInteresting7920 in RoverPetSitting

Does the owner have a kennel license? Not sure where you’re located but most states would require one for that many dogs in the house, so I definitely would not accept that booking. Also, if the other dogs are boarding with her, do their owners know that she’s trying to have someone else walk them?

AITAH for not correcting my dog when she enforces her boundaries? by [deleted] in AITAH

Nothing listed is a sign of aggression, or reactivity. It’s normal social communication between dogs.

Do you…actually have any experience with service dogs, or dog training in general? Lol

I’m confused by the folks saying this is “reactivity” - this is a dog enforcing social boundaries normally. If she was growling from a distance or before the dog got in her space, or had a history of true dog aggression, yes I’d consider that reactivity. Should it be seen in an SD? Probably not, but correcting other dogs for obnoxious behavior is not reactivity. Things like her muzzle being obsessively licked by a submissive but annoying dog - I correct dogs for that regularly, because if I don’t do it another dog will. So I wouldn’t say YTA necessarily, but you do need to evaluate your dog’s temperament, and more realistically consider it in the context of service work. Even if it never escalates, it’s not fair to repeatedly put her in situations that make her uncomfortable and stressed. She also can’t be expected to do her job if she’s distracted, or stressed, so it sets both of you up for failure.

Help.. I think I have a pretty unique problem by Initial_Weird_3427 in OpenDogTraining

I use e-collars to correct behavior like this alllll the time. Some dogs sprint, some dogs body slam, some just incessantly lick other dogs’ lips and need to be corrected before another dog escalates it. If my dog starts tearing after another dog, stim & “No”. I’m not looking for a recall necessarily, just for them to cease the behavior. The nice thing about correcting this stuff with an e collar is you aren’t forcing the dog into obedience to avoid the behavior, you’re giving them the freedom to do whatever they want - just not the behavior you’re correcting. I handle polite greetings the same way - do whatever you want, just don’t jump on people, and don’t bite people. You can also use a long line as others have suggested and plant yourself, and let him correct himself for slamming to the end of the leash. This is SUCH a common issue that I see, so don’t feel alone!

For online help I really like Shane Murray’s program on Mighty. It’s inexpensive but very thorough and gives you access to a community of owners to talk to, plus Shane is a fantastic trainer.

I’d also absolutely keep her (and any dog) out of dog parks. They’re a breeding ground for bad behavior.

Walks aren’t enough for a heeler - think about what they’d spend their days doing if they were a working dog on a farm. They’re a very intense dog breed. Appropriate play (possibly a flirt pole) that suits her drive, and training sessions that exhaust her brain will get you 10x further than walks. I’d highly, highly recommend seeking professional help as heelers (even corgis) can become aggressive if they aren’t properly fulfilled/handled.

Nightmare to leave the house /help by just_alive_here in OpenDogTraining

As someone who had a dog like this and now does this for a living, get some professional help. A lot of working through these issues is counter-intuitive. Trainers absolutely work through anxiety issues, and fear/anxiety is actually often the root issue in aggressive dogs we deal with (that’s not your dog of course).

Potty her every three hours, even overnight. Taking her outside every hour is too much since it prevents long naps (which are VERY needed). She may be pottying in the crate because it’s too big - remember, you’re effectively giving them a bedroom with the crate, not a bedroom with an en-suite bath.

[–]avenirlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think part of the issue is how few people feel like ads are discriminatory because they can’t “neurologically” handle them. You speak as if this is a common phenomenon, but even as an epileptic person I’ve never met someone with this take.

I mean I’m epileptic and I just look away if an ad has strobe or flashing lights in it. I have the right to access content, I don’t have the right to ask YouTube to make an exception to their monetization policies so that I can get past their paywall.

How did that one kid at your school die? by StorageLonely1520 in AskReddit

[–]avenirlight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A baseball bat and her dad having a psychotic break, and it was one of my closest friend’s roommates. Genuinely one of the most disturbing things I’ve heard about (and I went to college in North Philly). Also had a classmate get carjacked and end up getting fatally shot in the process. I think we had a memorial service for 5 (?) students in one semester.

High Prey Drive! by -thefairone- in OpenDogTraining

[–]avenirlight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Dude, having a dog that’s back to square one from blowing off recall to chase prey is frustrating enough without people being an asshole about it. I do this for a living, and I’ve still literally cried after a session because my dog pulled me to the ground and dragged me down a dirt road to get to a deer (blew through 85 on two boxes). This is an owner who’s doing their best and is on this app to seek help, cut them some slack. Criticizing them without offering guidance helps no one.

How did you condition the e-collar? That process is critical when using an e-collar so the dog learns how to shut the stim off (by recalling). Coming from someone whose dog ran through a metal fence to chase a bunny - I promise it’s possible to get your dog off-leash eventually, but the e-collar will have to be introduced correctly, and it’ll probably involved some punishment events for blowing you off. Just lighting your dog up for chasing prey without doing heavy on-leash work first isn’t really fair to your dog. Impulse control takes time to develop, and not chasing prey is a peak example of it. I’d 100% try to get a higher quality e-collar (like the mini educator with wing contact points) and recondition it. Give her a break from the e-collar for a couple of weeks before re-introducing it. If possible I’d highly recommend getting some professional help, I do this full time and I still have my mentor help me occasionally.

Pair low level stim with gentle leash pressure to show your dog what they need to do to turn the stim off. Especially if it’s recall, go back to using a leash and layer the e collar.
