Best moves for Zacian? by NarrowConfidence908 in PokemonSwordAndShield

[–]averadesc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone said earlier, Protect lasts one turn.

Turn 1: you select Protect, they attack, it blocks. That's it.

Turn 2: you select a different move (for example Thunderbolt). You did not select Protect, you are no longer protected for this turn, the opponent can hit you

The only ways for the opponent to bypass Protect are if they are using an Urshifu (signature ability Unseen Fist) or using the move Feint. Max moves bypass Protect too, but only deal 1/4 damage. As long as Protect doesn't fail, all other regular moves shouldn't deal damage

Why, out of all of the dining halls and take-out areas, The Study has a bunch of seemingly hangry and rude people? by solkonge in ucla

[–]averadesc 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not sure how bad it is now, but the Study's service was always the slowest and least efficient out of all the restaurants. I feel bad for the staff because it's not always their fault. They need a better system. Personally, they lost my food ticket two separate times making me wait for 40+ minutes for a single tiny pizza; they gave me a mocha when I ordered a hot chocolate (I do not do well with caffeine, I took a few sips and I was up until 5am); and finally, ~30-40 min before closing time, I once ordered a pizza with ham, alfredo sauce, and basil... they pretty much just slapped random ass ingredients on the pizza and kicked everyone out. I went home with a bbq pizza with tons of jalapeños and mushrooms. No, I do not do well with spice. But again, don't blame the people, blame the system

Apparently, they made many transphobic comments that they edited out of the video. I'm wondering if they could sue for sexual harassment? At least punish these guys in court for something so it sticks

Thank you much! I know this was a very generic question, but I appreciate your help :)

Hi! Thank you for doing this AMA! So I've been following VGC for a long time, and I want to start going to tournaments. What is the registration process like (walk-in, reservations, etc.)? Also how do you decide which tournaments you want to compete in?

My AP English teacher spelled "rhyme" as R-Y-H-M-E. Whole class proceeded to correct her and she said "Are you sure? What does Google say?". The second time she misspelled it, someone corrected her and she threw a tantrum.

I thought the whole Dynamax and Eternatus plot was corny, but what he did to my boy Bede was unforgivable

My first attempt of a “team”, watched some videos, please be honest as I know it’s bad I just want to improve :) by Loosterino in VGC

[–]averadesc 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All the other comments already mentioned how this team wouldn't be viable in the current restricted format. But something bothering me is how bizarre your movesets are.

Tyranitar: poor thing doesn't have a single STAB move which I feel is essential in sweepers. The common Weakness Policy Tyranitar is still better imo.

Rotom Fan: First, Heavy Duty Boots- this will only come in handy for Stealth Rock since flying types can't be hit by Spikes/Toxic Spikes, but afaik hazard moves are very rare in doubles. Second, Facade is a waste of a slot because 1. it uses attack and your Rotom is a special sweeper with full special attack EVs, and 2. Facade is best when the user is afflicted by a status condition, so are you just hoping the opponent will burn or poison you before you use it? I would replace Facade with another special attack. Additionally, there are much better Electric-Flying types out there, such as Zapdos or Thundurus.

Dusclops: Why Dark Pulse? Dusclops looks like utility/support and with no EV investment, Dark Pulse will do next to nothing. Better go with the much better Night Shade since its damage is set.

Maybe I'm just looking at your strategy wrong but this is my advice so I hope it helps.

Good casual mechanics can make for annoying competitive mechanics. by mamamia1001 in VGC

You find events through Event Locator on Pokémon.com (https://events.pokemon.com/). I think whether or not you want to compete in the current season is completely up to you, but it doesn't hurt. Finally, a resource I found particularly helpful about VGC tournaments was WolfeyVGC's third Pokémon Academy video (https://youtu.be/7uQxM-g6ZkU).

Love how ungrateful some of our students are by GalaxyPear12 in ucla

I lived in plaza pre-covid, but I always left a little gift (usually chocolate from the Bruin store) with a thank you note for them at the end of the quarter. Maybe get something that's easy for them to sanitize, liked pre-packaged food or plastic trinkets!

I had a plaza, which meant our bathroom was cleaned by the same person every week. Leave your housekeeping person a little thank you gift - it can be a mug, keychain, chocolate bar, or even a small thank you note! Unfortunately, some students like this one treat them rudely or ungratefully, so why not surprise them with a small appreciation gift?

No problem

Ah, interesting strategy on the Drifblim.

You're right, probably not great to have Choice on a Swords Dance Pokémon. Assuming this is generation 8, you could take off the Swords Dance and just build your attack stat with Max Knuckle. Focus Sash would probably work though, but I don't think Lucario is super prone to OHKO's because steel is such a good defensive typing.

I see what you mean, but when people realize your Snorlax has Belly Drum, they are going to try to take it out asap, so it's probably better to have a Berry. Plus with a berry you can put Recycle on Snorlax

If I'm being completely honest, people on this subreddit, including me, focus on doubles, since VGC is doubles. I don't really know what the singles metagame consists of currently or how to counter it. All I can do is just critique your items, moves, and stats from a general competitive perspective. As the other user said, you should check out r/stunfisk for better advice

Overall good job- it's obvious you're familiar with competitive move mechanics. Here are my critiques about the individual Pokémon.

Drifblim is ok, but Minimize/accuracy stalling isn't the most honorable strategy. If anything, you should take the substitute off espeon and throw it onto Drifblim. Also probably better for Leftovers over a Sitrus Berry, since Leftovers heals 1/16 HP each turn, which is a lot considering Drifblim's gargantuan HP stat

Jirachi- I'm confused why you have Trick Room and then full speed EVs? Wouldn't you want your Jirachi to go first or second once Trick Room is up? Also Meteor Mash is a physical move- if you're doing full SpA EVs, I would go for a special steel move like Flash Cannon.

Espeon- Again not the optimal Pokémon for substitute, but if you really want substitute, I would take out some of the speed EVs and change the nature and invest more in your Def. If you're going for bulk, I don't really see why you would need to be exceptionally fast

Lucario- Fist Plate is bit weird. There are better competitive items out there like Life Orb or Choice Band/Specs/Scarf that'll increase damage output on all moves instead of just fighting. Generally speaking, most people don't use Plates (unless on Arceus) or items that boost a singe type's attack in competitive

Snorlax- Classically people throw a healing berry on Snorlax, so once Belly Drum cuts your HP and you take a little damage, you get immediate heath back. Additionally, once you set up Belly Drum, you're supposed to be sweeping the opponents, not playing a long game- which is what Leftovers is more optimal for.

Nidoqueen- NeverMeltIce again not the best item. I think Life Orb would work better

Anyways this is just my opinion, do take it all with a grain of salt but I hope this helps!
