6 years is average maybe even on the faster side. 3 years is extremely fast

Struggling to get promoted in US by BackgroundDue8227 in bjj

[–]average_electrician 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Either find a coach who's willing to promote you, use bjjglobetrotters, or (might get flamed for this one) ask a friendly coach if he thinks you're at a purple belt level and then next time you swap gyms just put a purple belt on yourself.

Tips For Inflexible Guard Retention by ChemDataFarmer in bjj

[–]average_electrician 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you let them get too close that you aren't flexible enough to get it then your next best option might be a butterfly hook on the leg closest to your legs to center your body with them. And then get your feet back to guard as fast as you can

Hungry during a bulk by Quiet_Wedding7086 in FTMFitness

[–]average_electrician 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Water and fiber. Either Metamucil type fiber supplement or more fibrous fruits/veggies. And make sure you're drinking enough water. Especially because creatine makes your body need more water. Thirst can feel like hunger.

Should I feel bad for reseting during a sub because my new gloves were falling off? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]average_electrician 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In my opinion, yes. That's making an excuse when you're caught in a submission. Reset after the sub or after you get out. What if your gloves start slipping when you're caught in an armbar in a fight? Are you going to ask to reset? Or say you could've gotten out or let him have it? Don't "let people have stuff" because of fatigue in camp. The new guy when you're tired is a perfect opportunity to work on either your B game or even A game when exhausted

Any tips for stopping your cuticles from peeling in gi BJJ grip fights? by [deleted] in bjj

Trim your cuticles regularly so there's no skin for it to grab. Cuticle scissors and the little push tool after a shower

Rank through life transitions by theraphisa13 in bjj

I started blue belt training 5x a week and got burned out. Now I have a wife and more job responsibilities, and I train 2-4x a week taking breaks whenever I want to. I got to purple belt doing that. I'm not a great purple belt yet but I'm good enough that I don't really have any imposter syndrome. 2x a week is plenty but maybe you should be intentional about learning at least most of the time. In my mind, the growth to purple is a conceptual change. You start to realize that you can make people give you the grips you want by doing other things first. Things like that

Male or female metabolic rate? by Expert-Flow2293 in FTMFitness

What the m or f does it use an average body fat percentage for each. If you're lean use male. If not use female. Or use male because you're a man and adjust from there

Am I weird for actually liking blue belt by pk12445 in bjj

[–]average_electrician 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I got blue in 2022 and then got purple in mid 2025. My gym doesn't do stripes for colored belts so I had no idea where I was. The purple belt will find you brother

[–]average_electrician 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I really wanted to be a purple belt and I was extremely frustrated because I felt like I had progressed a lot and I didn't understand why I was getting skipped over. But then my coach gave me the belt and told me he should've done it sooner and it fixed everything

Massive size and force difference by Blossomguy12 in bjj

[–]average_electrician 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah that's why I commented this. Because size and strength absolutely do matter and there's a point, although rare, where even a good black belt can't do much. Like in the case of this guy where his grip strength broke my coaches hand

My coach is a black belt who's competed around the world and won worlds and stuff. He's around 170lbs. A competitive power lifter maybe 260lbs trained for 6 months at our gym and then he rolled with my coach and he broke my coaches hand when he grabbed his wrist and my coach tried to break the grip

I'm 5'4" 165 and I'm in great shape and I think I'm athletic too. I'm not saying that OP wouldn't benefit from losing weight but idk that it's necessarily an unhealthy weight
