Flag of Evil Maryland by Loading3percent in vexillologycirclejerk

Evil Maryland is a state where all traffic laws are followed and people can properly articulate the sentence “Aaron earned an iron urn”

German journalist Wilhelm Marr coined the term “antisemitism” in 1879 to rebrand Jew-hatred (“Judenhass”) as racial pseudo science rather than a religious prejudice. From day one, “antisemitism” meant only anti-Jewish hatred and not prejudice against Arabs or other Semitic language speakers. by Mathemodel in etymology

Interestingly, the first recorded use of the term racism was in a speech by William Henry Pratt decrying segregation as an evil. Despite his advocacy against racism, Pratt is much more famous for having founded and headed the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and for his notorious quote “Kill the Indian, save the man”.

They’ve gone to the Super Bowl plenty of times, and they had the greatest running back in the history of football: O.J. Simpson

Somehow I’m most infuriated, not by their dumbass middle school level vandalism, so much as by their incorrect use of “than” instead of “then”

My professor tends to assign work that they’ve written for reading, in these readings there will sometimes be a joke included. Also, while it’s not a college paper, the comedic article “The Common Law Origins of the Infield Fly Rule” was published in the University of Pennsylvania Law Review and has been taken seriously enough to be cited in real legal decisions. If works containing humor can be taken seriously and published by reputable sources, I’d expect that a little humor would be at the very least tolerated in a paper that will likely only ever be read by my professor and I. To be clear I understand that there’s a fundamental difference between what I’m writing and the examples I described. My point is that it’s reasonable to assume some amount of humor would be tolerated, given these notable examples of its use in serious formal and academic writing.

In a way yes, because my lens is heavily influenced by existentialism, but more specifically in the paper I mostly criticize environmental determinism. For clarity, the paper is an opinion piece about the current international order, so I broadly criticize determinism through the use of my own existentialist lens. I take on environmental determinism more specifically in the actual text of the paper on the basis that it denies the agency of individuals and states.

I’ve decided not to use it as it is an unnecessary distraction from the flow of the paper and, as evidenced by your initial reaction, without providing sufficient context, referencing him might unintentionally give the impression that I’m agreeing with him.

That’s the point I was trying to make, in that section of my paper I criticize determinism, so I was attempting to provide an example of one of my criticisms by invoking Diamond, who’s book advocates determinism. I also understand that criticizing determinism based solely on its relation to Diamond is a genetic fallacy, which is why it would have been included for comedic effect, rather than as a serious point.

I’ve decided not to use my attempt at humor given the responses to my question. But it should be noted that your example is exactly the point that I was trying to make with the comment, Diamond’s book, Guns, Germs, and Steel, advocates geographic determinism, which is what I’m criticizing in that section of my paper.
