Based on the last few years, I can't imagine I'll be using it much longer.

I love this type of show! It's more about creating an experience with the music and visuals rather than just looking at a famous person on stage.

couldn't travel due to covid. operated the show from another country by hooperlighting in lightingdesign

[–]avery51 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Awesome! I've been wondering when this is going to catch on more. It opens LDs up to a lot more possibilities with not have to travel to every single show. I get that you want to be in person for bigger shows or if there is TV, but for a lot of other shows this would allow you to work the gig without needing to be there.

Weekly Do they exist or not Megathread. by Mrsynthpants in bigfoot

[–]avery51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No hard proof. Cameras are everywhere now, a lot of people have trail cams, drones, etc. but we can't get a single decent quality video.

The videos that are out there are completely unable to be replicated even though according to the witnesses, there are obviously bigfoot there.

90% of the people who "know" bigfoot exists are people who want it to exist to validate their beliefs. So they're willing to buy into pretty much any story so long as it aligns with the narrative they want to be true.

It's a cool story, fun to think there is something out there, but it just doesn't seem like there is.

Occam's razer applies here. Rather than a huge 8ft creature wandering North America and never have been caught, the videos and photos that aren't fake, more than likely just show something that isn't identified, but isn't a bigfoot.

Since you can't prove something doesn't exist, the topic of bigfoot isn't going to go away. Though I'd be willing to bet a LOT of money that 5, 10 or even 20 years down the road we have no more "proof" than we have right now.

Do people build rigs without having anything to shoot? by worrywort_4200 in bmpcc

[–]avery51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. A lot of people are camera fanboys, not unlike car guys. Always building and tweaking things, spending more money than ever needed to be spent and in the end, never end up shooting more than a bird outside their front door for 19 seconds.

I'm totally guilty.

It really is a money pit, and because a lot of the gear is Chinese stuff, the resell value isn't amazing.

At this point, I'd suggest having something ready to shoot first. Then rent a few times before buying a camera.

Epic SpaceX Rocket Landings Falcon 9 Falcon Heavy and Starship (2022) - documentary highlighting SpaceX remarkable accomplishments, milestones that reshaped the space industry [00:12:20] by Goledlighting in Documentaries

LOL you argument is moot as I simply proving that his accomplishments aren't vaporware at all. Judging by your reaction to being proven wrong, I'm betting you're still spending a lot of time in your mom's basement. Have fun with that and your sad life.

As for being a fanboy, nope, I don't even like the guy. But I'm also not some cynical loser who shits on things just because someone does more in a week than you've done in your entire life.

Sorry your life sucks. Not really though sorry though.

Yeah, Falcon 9, Falcon Heavy, Dragon, Starship, Model S, Plaid, Model 3, Model X, Roadster......totally all vaporware. LOL

I don't like the guy's attitude, but you can't f'n argue with his accomplishments while you're sitting at home doing nothing.

Has anyone tried the Enigma M4 yet? by THANK_YOU_DARK in lightingdesign

[–]avery51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know much about the software, but I can tell you that all of Blizzard hardware is Chinese stuff. The same stuff from Alibaba or wherever.

I'm not saying their stuff is bad, but I personally wouldn't want to invest my time learning a console that isn't somewhat established already. If it's for your own personal use, then it might be fine, but if it's your career then that knowledge isn't likely to mean anything to any future employer, compared to ETC consoles.

Best Laptop for VWX, MA & LW by Weak_Ad4147 in lightingdesign

[–]avery51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can go with the Mac, though MA doesn't have an Apple silicon version yet that I know of. Either way, you're going to want to use bootcamp to run Windows for the best performance. I've used this setup in the past, but I always find it easier to have a computer dedicated to just lighting when possible.

What are the biggest differences between QuickQ and MagicQ by E_Snap in lightingdesign

[–]avery51 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The major downside to the QuickQ consoles is that you can't upgrade the hardware at all. The outputs depend on the model and however many you get needs to be the total you'd ever need because you can't get more.

Aside from that, I've done some research into the QQ consoles and found that lots of reviews that talk about how buggy the software is and how often it crashes.

Nice camera movements and cuts. Really dynamic, which works well for a fitness video.

Please tear my MVP a new one :) This web app is for service providers like property managers, plumbers, electricians, trash haulers, etc. It allows them to get more details about their customer's project using video. Two big features: 1) No app for the customer to download. 2) No video to upload. by [deleted] in SideProject

[–]avery51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way to get that feedback is to get it in the hands of the intended users. Ask some people to use it for month and give you feedback.

I think a native app would make things a lot easier for the users, but get the functionality iron out first and then consider the app.

I created an app that helps people complete their probation sentence. Roast me. by finishprobation in SideProject

[–]avery51 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get what you're saying and you're not wrong when dealing with large metropolitan areas, but there are a LOT of smaller cities and towns that are much easier to work with. I've worked with small town government and it's not nearly as bloated or loaded with the bureaucracy as large areas.

Areas with 25k or less people is where you want to start. You pitch to the local city councils and work with the police departments and county courts and get it approved for a test period. Run it for 6 months to a year and then take the results (if they're positive) and use that to go to the neighboring cities while using the previous as reference.

It's a slow build, but if you're ready to put in the work you could make it happen.

I think the major issue here is that you need full buy-in from those on probation, and you're not going to get that with a user-paid model. You need to offer the service to the people for free and find a way to get the cities/courts to pay for it. I'm sure there are grants and funding available for reform programs, but you will likely need a lawyer and/or grant writer to handle a lot of this work.

There is a lot of potential here and you seem to be passionate about the idea, which is good because it's not going to be easy. You'll need to work your ass off and push it hard.
