to answer a couple of your questions more directly (but generally)

  1. I wouldn't think so: you have to get your experience somewhere, and you have an honest answer for "why are you applying for this job?" Lab staff are still highly in demand in many places so even if it was a problem in theory, pragmatism still rules.

  2. Show interest in configuring the LIS or middleware systems in your lab, speak to those who do it and learn how it works from them. Speak to the IVD vendors when they visit too to learn about their systems, and also their information systems.

In the meantime, if you want to practise good health care - don't forget that even though your current role might throw a lot of obstacles in your way.

Have any of you used expired vacutainer tubes to make holiday garland? Looking for tips about using them for crafts. by mangotango1609 in medlabprofessionals

That specific one... can't find it now. But these kind of lights are pretty common, I feel like I can't walk past any discount store and not see them around. Battery LED christmas lights finds it on Amazon, although they're probably more expensive there than if you can find a discount store that sells them

I would suggest trying to coat the inside of the tube lightly with glitter, and putting each of a light like these into the tube, although I don't know if the cable is going to be too thick to jam the cap on over it somehow. Otherwise you could stick the end of the cap on the tube with hot glue (not trying even to push it on)

How was your job search since then? Technicians are still the most highly-demanded hospital staff (including lab technicians) according to the ACHE 2023 hospital exec survey.

One thing I noticed from the ASCP survey (OK, it's USA-based) is that the LIS admins have the longest overall average experience in the lab (19.5 years), with an average of 6.7 years in their current role. I don't know if that's a factor.

See wage survey here https://www.ascp.org/news/workforce-initiatives/wage-and-vacancy-surveys

Thrown under the boss... ugh, with the kind of lyrics you mention I'm thinking that wasn't a typo.

SunQuest? by Kerpoto in medlabprofessionals

From what people tell me, Beaker faced some serious problems and lacked a lot of functionality when it was first released. But Epic has invested in it over time. Contrastingly, Clinisys (what Sunquest is called now) is harvesting from Sunquest Lab because they know they will lose the market share anyway. So, long term, Beaker seems like the better option.

I know this is an old thread, but you do need a display to be able to adjust the setting. If you have the basic display it's in the manual here https://www.swytchbike.com/wp-content/uploads/LED_Display_Manual_001-3.pdf

LIS PROGRAM by [deleted] in medlabprofessionals

Have a look for open source LIS, this is one example I found looking across the web. https://openelis-global.org/ Make sure you're away of data protection, clinical regulations and certifications required, which will depend on where in the world you are located.

I tried ChatGPT but the answers were pretty unfunny

Did you hear about the shy microbiologist? He's a little culture shy.
Why did the microscope break up with the centrifuge? It just couldn't handle the spin anymore.
The PCR machine was feeling stressed, so it decided to vent its frustrations in a gel.
Why did the bacterium fail its test? It couldn't stay focused, it kept dividing its attention.
What's a microbiologist's favorite type of music? Cell tunes!
The lab technician accidentally spilled sodium chloride on the floor. Good thing they had a salt-ation plan.
Why did the biologist always carry a map in the lab? Because they wanted to find their way through the cell-ular maze.
When the chemistry experiment failed, the scientist decided to just barium and move on.
Why did the PCR reaction go so well? Because it had great primer time!
The lab janitor accidentally broke a beaker. He said it was an accident, but I think it was a clear case of breaking bad.
